Some I've guessed, some I've been told, but there must be many more cases I never heard about... Please add them.

The result seems to be usually bad, so I hope publishers will become more weary of changing the theme of a game for no real reason. If you don't like a game's theme, don't disfigure it and just publish another one.

I interviewed Stefan Brück for an article, and he mentioned that Knizia had submitted Palazzo with an Easter Island theme in which players build moai, the statues that everyone associates with the island. Once research revealed that moai are not built in layers, but carved from a single piece of volcanic ash, the theme was switched to the current one.

Original : Longshoremen unloading cotton at a dockyard.
Published : Gangsters smuggling whiskey to speakeasies.

Reason : Even though its about longshoremen, afraid of slavery/cotton connection. Gangsters more popular than both slavery and longshoremen combined.
Result : Improved. More violent theme of gangsters allows stronger action cards, and gangwars makes more sense why speakeasies would change control from time to time. Americans love playacting, and everyone knows how to do gangster voices from movies.

Original Theme: Asteroid mining game that was taking place on the edge of a black hole.

Revised Theme: Fantasy; Escape from the BalrogMagdar with fat loot.

Reason: Presumably to fit in with the FFG fantasy themes and because sci-fi doesn't sell, but that's an outright guess.

Result: Probably improved, but impossible to say without seeing original game. The revised theme fits the game.

The original theme was about a siege of an Italian medieval town (Lucca). In that one seven “wall” cards were laid down in a circle to form the walls of Lucca under siege.

Players had to play cards on the wall either to defend the town or to attack it. The game was designed to attend a contest for unpublished games which had to have “the Walls of Lucca” as theme. I think that the publisher, even if he was intrigued by the mechanism, was never convinced by the theme itself.

During a convention (Origins I guess) someone who tried the prototype suggested to him the “graverobbing” theme and he consequently submitted it to me; the funny thing is that I immediately accepted mainly because I’ve totally misunderstood the suggestion: in fact I thought something like predators of ancients sites like pyramids and so on (i.e. thinking of an “Indiana Jones” theme).

So, I was bit surprised when (looking at the first sketches) I saw that walls became graves (which are now laid down in a row).

Personally, I’m totally satisfied by the final result as this theme is undoubtedly more original and better developed.

This one is entirely my fault. Ty's original Napoleonic theme inspired the entire mechanisms of the 3 trick lines of battle game. But trying to do a single deck trick-taking game meant that Jim couldn't spend a lot on art.

I convinced Ty and Jim that a Civil War theme would let us use Civil War photographs. Mercifully Jim was able to get Aaron Williams to do the layout, and turn the pile of odd photographs I dug up into a stunning game.

Original theme: Development and enrichment in northen british islands.

New theme: Development and enrichment in the medieval region of Salamanca, Castilla, Spain.

Reason: Perhaps the publisher spects to have the success of Carcassonne, wich is based on that medieval french city. Of course, that is only a speculation.

Results: We have to see them yet. Firt opinion: the new theme carries lots of historical imprecisions and situations that have never happened in Salamanca in all its long history. This could persuade hispanic speakers to criticize the game for this, as I'm kind of doing it right now...

Original: Civ building on a distant planet in Alpha Centauri
Interim: Polis building in 800 BC in ancient Greece
Published: City building in Renaissance Italy

Reason: Gerd Fenchel notes that the game was taking too long (6 hours). The theme was changed as part of the redesign process to reign in the playing time and simplify the game in general. I expect that "SciFi Does Not Sell" may have played a role as well, but I have no evidence of this; it appears the play testers helped push the new theme in part to "beautify" the game, which may be almost the same thing.

Result: Very Good

I imagine the mechanics would have worked very well on Alpha Centauri: food would have been scarce indeed! This explains a lot about food in Gerd Fenchel's La Città. I always wondered if Renaissance Italian farmers were that tight, really. But... I am glad the game is now 6 turns instead of hours, and the components are "beautiful".

I presume the 'war' aspects were finely honed during the interim ancient Greece theming. This is a bit thin in La Città with cities regularly annexing neighboring cities; one might expect all of Italy to become a giant megalopolis one day! But... it works well enough, and is the major aspect that makes this game Brutal.

It always seemed clear that the Civilization computer game had a great influence on La Città. Turns out there is more to it than just that. No jokes please regarding a possible McDonald's Golden Arches interim theme - this is one of my favorite games, and that would just upset me.

Drakon started life as a programming game with pawns moving onto program commands. When feedback loops came into play, square loops were formed. The commands did odd things, like forcing the other players to draw extra commands, and the object was to get rid of all your commands. The game moved away from programming as the cards/tiles became square and less to do with programming, and more to do with affecting the other players. It became "Primrose Path", resembling very much its present incarnation, except that you had to get rid of tiles in your hand instead of gathering gold. It had a bit of an "Alice in Wonderland" feel to it.

Tom Jolly showed it to WotC in 1993, the same year that MTG came out; and they liked it, offering him a contract. Two years later, they decided not to publish board games and killed it. Garfield suggested he change from dumping tiles to gathering gold, which he did. It became "Vaults". He subsequently had a contract with F.X. Schmid USA, who tied it up for 1.5 years without publishing it. He met Chris Petersen of FFG at Essen, and sold him on the idea of DiskWars, and he subsequently took a look at what was now "Golden Vaults." He renamed it "Dragon's Vault" while looking at it, and released it as "Drakon" almost 2 years later.

Original: Lost Cities: The Board Game- adventure theme. The game with the original theme based on the card game was still released some months later for the American gamers.

Re-issued as: Keltis - pretty much an abstract (not hiding the fact that it is) with slight rule changes

Reason: Maybe it was the rule changes, I don't remember. The rule changes were actually suggested by the publisher (Kosmos) but Knizia said in an interview that was the right thing to do.

Result: Keltis won Spiel des Jahres 2008. It has spawned some different games (for example Keltis: Das Kartenspiel which is superior to Lost Cities and also playable with 2 to 4 players) and a great expansion (Keltis: Neue Wege, Neue Ziele). Still the majority of American players prefer Lost Cities: The Board Game while that's not the case in Europe.
