What with all the attention given to the latest fad in gaming, I figured it was about time that we all looked back to our roots and gave some credit where credit was due. Yeah, that's right - it's time to stand up and recognize the Ameritrash game. So what exactly makes an Ameritrash game? Find out below.

Cheesy exploitation of current events in a game. Yep, take America's need to exploit a current event to make a buck, particularly in a boardgame. I could go with War on Terror game by some Brits, but I don't count a game trying to make a political statement as fitting this here. Have to admit a game like Squeeze was done JUST to capitalize on a current event. THIS is the trademark of an Ameritrash game.

If a European designer would of done this, it would of had a bunch of cubes or meeples, an auction phase, and a wooden gavel, plus 4 of 5 Knizia scoring twists where you could lose the game if OJ was acquitted or fried in the electric chair. But no, with Squeeze we get the good old reliable track and dice movement mechanic patterned after Monopoly! Good old Ameritrash ingenuity!

It's not unheard of for some Ameritrash to have errata or FAQs longer than the original rulebook. This is often a side effect of Slew of Cards and Hordes of Chits because there are so many possible permutations.

You loose, again

A game where you can be eliminated on your first turn has to belong on this list.

Even the weakest enemies in the dungeon can kill you if you fight poorly and the best thing that can happen to you is an empty room. (Dungeon Quests battle system has no luck, some may not agree on that but they’re wrong).

Your best option is always to grab some trinket and chicken out but no-one does that, ever.

If you do something, don't stop half-way through!
I don't want to hear no "You can't do that because the game would be too complicated to account for it" bullsh*t when I play a typical Ameritrash game. And this one is the holy grail of the sort.

Book-keeping

Ideally, there should be a one-page form to fill out every turn, plus a couple of auxilliary ones. Best of all is if the calculations involved make it easier to set up a computer with a spreadsheet beside the gaming table than to do everything manually.

And yeah, this is a European game, but it's got so many of the great Ameritrash qualities: counters galore, huge maps, dice, pages and pages and pages of tables and special rules, theme coming out the ears, and a very long playing time.

Stuff you can add/change yourself

I wouldn't dream of trying to tinker with Dr Knizia's perfectly balanced designs, but games where you just have a Big Deck Of Random Cards (Talisman's another) you can just write a load more of you own and shuffle them in.

You can invent variants and extra stuff to your heart's content. FUN!laugh

Intentional Imbalance

The point of most of the Ameritrash games out there is to imbalance the game in your favor - this is not a design flaw, it's designed right in. Why slog through the front lines like everyone else when you can just drop your Dragonlord into the other guy's Kingdom and torch the place from the inside?

As an aside, this is by far my favorite of the more recent Ameritrash games. It's got it all!

*cough*

I can't believe this isn't on here yet. It's a strong contestant for the quintessential ameritrash game.

-Created by a large, soulless corporation (Hasborg)
-Incredibly overproduced--A zinc football!
-Rips off a european game (Blood Bowl)
-A theme that combines cyborgs, violence, and sports!!!
-Really fun with fun people, but otherwise somewhat flawed
-Available at deep discount and frequent trade list fodder
-Made for kids, played by adults!
-Does not cast sides as good vs. evil--both teams look pretty nasty, giving it a slight dystopic cyberpunk feel
-Has the faint reek of failure and broken promises--no expansion teams were ever made.
-Was able to reinvent itself despite public shame and rise Phoenix-like from the ashes of defeat, in the form of Heroscape!
-One of the figures looks just like Abraham Lincoln

Ameritrash boardgames aren't about playing to win a football game, they're about playing to win the Superbowl. They're not about saving a town, they're about saving the universe! If all the marbles aren't on the table, then the "Ameritrash" label should have an asterisk next to it. If the stakes ain't big, it gets the star.

Zero-sum Game: Once you take the neutrals, you only can gain by taking from someone else. Convince gullible Euro-gamers and European-Union cheerleaders that Diplomacy is about cooperative building strategies . . . and then slit their throats at your earliest convenience. Diplomacy has combat, "world" domination, long play time, zero-sum competition, and player elimination (possibly early and extensive, wiping out most players). Note that the "solution" to the player-elimination "problem" was to create the Hundred variant, a "junior" 3-player map so the losers can eliminate each other again while the main game concludes. I agree that the chess-like stalemate possibility is un-Ameritrashish so I tried to remedy that with the even more Ameritrashish variants on my website.
