Some games have a theme so well integrated with the mechanics, that when you play it you actually feel like you are following a story line. And ahen you are done, you (or at least I) have an urge to write a short story of what happened.

Wargames, of course, seem to do this on a regular basis. But other games, not so much. This is a list of the ones that do feel like a story as opposed to just a game.

Is it a surprise that the first item on the list is an Euro-War hybrid. I suspect that many of these hybrids work well within stories. I personally get into this game so much that I start naming the different nations and genuinly imagine an alternate history as it plays.

You'd think that most dungeon crawls would easily be able to succeed on story telling, but the truth is that, at least for me, they don't. Even Descent, which is my fav, feels like I'm playing a game as opposed to living a story.

Space Hulk is different tho'. I feel the desperation of the soldiers as I progress the derelict space ship. And I feel the pain when Vazquez has to sacrifice himself to give the remaining marines an extra minute in the last chance they can have to escape.

I think its the beautiful (but not really functional) map that gives indonesia the story.

I think being able to tell a story is a positive thing in games. But this one doesn't do it at all for me. I think its because the designers specifically made this game to tell a story, and then forgot to add things like strategy, tactics, and meaningful decisions.

I bet a lot of sports games would fit into this list. Things like Pizza Box Football, and StreetSoccer.. Instead of filling the list, I'll just put this one tho'. Mainly because it really does an incredible job at showing a bike race in a believable fashion.

I love this quote (Jack Squat):

" A simulation of wandering aimlessly in the wilderness until you die, but unfortunately not as much fun as actually doing so. "

Really I just added this here because I love the quote. But really, the story is there despite the boredom that sets in when you play it.

For a deduction game, Fury of Dracula can tell some wonderful, exciting, and creepy stories. You really have to get into imagining the scenes play out as you enter a town, uncover what Dracula has left behind, and deal with it. The artwork, along with the locations and the time of day mechanic can provide a lot of material for your imagination to create a tense dramatic scene, such as racing along crowded streets in a seaside Eastern European town, closing in on Dracula on all sides as the sun slips toward the horizon, only to see the last crates of Transylvanian earth being carted below as his ship slips out of the dock, and realizing that you're being watched by a mysterious figure in the doorway of the ship's cabin just as the sun drops below the horizon...

In this game, your character grows from peasant to merchant then to banker. I definitely get a sense of a story unravelling with this one. Apparently this game is not for everyone, having read a lot of negative comments (albeit most of them are pretty pointless).

This German CCG definitely tells a story. Ok, at the moment it tells only the first 6,000 of the 140,000 written Perry Rhodan science fiction pages, but it's a beginning, isn't it? And it plays faster than reading, too!
