Though their street-cred has been in decline since "Goo", back in the day Sonic Youth pushed the musical envelope farther than just about any band since. Check out Confusion is Sex and Bad Moon Rising. Kill your idols, baby.

Just to prove that I'm a geezer that only listens to 20-30 year old bands...howzabout TV on the Radio? I think they may one day be a Great Band...very original stuff, there's really nothing else like it. Prior to their new album "Return to Cookie Mountain" they seemed to be sort of trying to figure out a direction despite some really awesome early tracks (like "Young Liars" and "Staring at the Sun") and half a great album ("Desparate Babes, Bloodthirsty Youth") but now they've got their sound honed to sort of a cross between shoegazer rock, soul, and something totally left-field. It's on 4AD and has cover art by Vaughn Oliver so if those things appeal to you...the cut "Wolf Like Me" is hands-down the single of the year, imagine Joy Division hopped up on barbituates and fronted by some lost 1960s soul singer. Best song about werewolves ever, too.

Suicide- two New Yorkers with bizarre fashion sense, a broken-down Farfisa organ, and a bad attitude. Definitely one of the most important bands in terms of electronic music. Check out their debut album (recorded by Ric Ocasek after Bruce Springsteen persuaded Sire to sign them!)for about all the down-and-out, minimalist heroin rock you can imagine made even sleazier by the cheap electronics. Completely essential. I got to see them in Atlanta a few years ago and after joining Alan Vega (looking more and more like Roy Orbison these days)in a few bars of "Dream Baby Dream" he hugged me, wrapping his silver track-jacket sleeved arms around me. I said "thanks so much for coming to Atlanta" and he looked me square in the eye and said "No, thank you for coming to see us."

"Run DMC first said a DJ could be a band"

So let's give it up for some of the great hip hop groups, all in one shot here: Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Treacherous Three, Afrika Bambaata and Soulsonic Force, Mantronix, De La Soul, Eric B. and Rakim, N.W.A., and of course Public Enemy and Run DMC...

A shoe-in based on the band name/game correlation...one of the best bands to put the funk into punk, Gang of Four's "Entertainment" is one of the best records you can possibly purchase...I saw them last year and I never, out of all the hundreds of bands I've seen of every genre, witnessed a band play with such direct, visceral intensity...and these are old timers!

No matter what happens in my life, I will always adore The Misfits...I know every song backward and forward as if it were some sort of genetic memory. I started listening to them in my formative years when I was just getting really into horror and punk at the same time so could there have been a more appropriate band?

I've never been starstruck in my life except for the time Jerry Only let me play his bass...I nearly cried, because it almost broke my back!

When I got the Pere Ubu box set and put on "The Final Solution," which I hadn't heard in maybe 25 years, it horrified me: it was a perfectly radio-friendly song. Of course, it was radio-friendly by 2006's standards. It was recorded during the Ford administration.

And then you go forward another year or two to Dub Housing and all your radio bets are off. Is there a more insane pop song than "I Will Wait"? It's catchy, but against all odds, since a) the lyrics are incomprehensible b) they're being shrieked by a lunatic c) the synthesizer doesn't appear to be making any sounds that could be described as "musical" d) the guitar solo sounds like it's frantically trying to get out of this song and into another one. And that's just the first track.

I read someone's (somewhat credible) assertion that the guitar fade-in intro to "The Modern Dance" was the best ever. I don't agree, but I'm a hard-core "Baby's On Fire" partisan.

Boston's 1977 debut album still the best selling debut album of all time (sorry Hootie & The Blowfish, but "Cracked Rear View was NOT your debut album) with 17 million copies sold.

Not only is Tom Scholtz a musical genius, he has a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering from MIT and holds several dozen patents on devices that he has invented that have become standard equipment in the music industry over the past three decades.

In fact, without his contributions, many performers over the years would probably have never had a career.

I've only been to four concerts in my life, but half of them were to see Boston. Hope they're going on tour again soon.

In 1975, Hawkwind recorded an "eternal champion" concept album "Warrior on the Edge of Time" based on Michael Moorcock's Elric books.

Michael Moorcock contributes lyrics extensively to the Hawkwind album.
