As I gain gamegeek experience my collection is maturing and I have quite a lot of games that I like. However I'm always on the lookout for really weird things that I can show to people to amaze them with the variety of games that are out there. I'll give a few examples of what I mean and I hope that other users can add the most unusual games they know of. Oh yeah, and please restrict yourself to GOOD games.

So you've got this wooden chest of drawers and you put gems in and turn the box around and turn it over and then you open the drawers and see what comes out. My son's bed room is like that.

So, somebody was probably drunk one night and started trying to blow feathers off his nose while lying on a cheap motel bed.

Or, maybe they played "the balloon game" with their kid. Not Stephen Glenn's. The one where you try to keep a regular (not helium) balloon from touching the ground. You each alternately thump the balloon upwards, hoping it never comes to touch the floor. See if you can go 250 or more "thumps" without failing.

That must be what made someone thing of this game.

Turns everything about trick taking games on their head:
- You do NOT have to follow suit.
- The highest card of a suit that was NOT lead wins the trick.

But the game still works--beautifully!

Friendless, I didn't seem an "Ace of Aces" or "Lost Worlds"-type game in your rating list. My brother got this version for me when I was quite young. I always thought these games were quite unique. Each player chooses a movement direction in his book and calls out a page number for his opponent to look up. Then each player looks up this movement on this page and turns to a second and final page which displays a locational drawing and any appropriate damage information for that turn. (Hard to believe that such games could be created with 1970-era computers.)

I think Friedrich makes this list. It is certainly (IMHO) a very good game and while a lot of games use cards to impact on outcomes, Friedrich takes it another step. The thing that makes the list is the use of, in essence (I say in essence as the cards run 2-13 in a suit plus a Reserve card), regular decks of cards to resolve combat and to buy more armies.

Making it more unique is that the board is divided into rectangular areas, the indcated suit of which is used in any combat where your general - the disks - is in one of the cities there (see photo). If you are adjacent to a foe you fight - that may mean two different suits if across a "suit boundary".

This mechanism leads to many interesting strategies - how long do you fight? Do you take losses and retreat to preserve cards or draw an enemy in? Or you can simply sit and bluff! Call it Prussian Hold'em!

I'm surprised Nacht die Magier was mentioned and this was not (although being a non-seller that went OoP probably did not help).

In this game, players are vampire hunters, stalking Dracula in his castle before he can escape. The twist is that the tower in the center of the board has a red light and a blue light (depicting night and day). Having the red light or the blue light on reveals new features on the board, opens secret passages, and even alters the value of the dice!

In no danger of winning the Spiel de Jahres but a clever little mechanic that brings an additional fun factor to an otherwise average game.

Ok, let me throw this one on here. Base the game around trying to capture the feel of the maps of the era. Make the combat diceless, and have a piece placement configuration unlike anything else seen before in any board game, let alone wargame. Oh, did I mention playable in 2 hours or less? This could of possibly not worked at all, but it works brilliantly, making it a must have for people wanting something different, from hardcore wargamers to abstract gamers, to those who even like Euros.

I should also add the lines the mark off the territories are light in the game, and hard to make out at first, but they do work also.

I placed this game in my Top Ten just because it has a very simple and elegant design, and it only takes about 5 minutes to play online. All you have to do is gather all your pieces together before your opponent, and the only materials you need are a set of checkers and game board. You can play it several places online like www.boardspace.net, www.littlegolem.net, and http://games.cs.ualberta.ca/webgames/loa/.

Yet another Haba entry on this list... which shouldn't be a total surprise.

This time you're ice-fishing... you punch holes in the (paper) ice and fish for ball bearings (fish) through the holes you create with a magnetic fishing pole. Amazingly, there's actually some tactical decisions to be made admist all the dice-rolling & random distribution of fish.

This one deserved the SdJ Kinderspiel it received.

This is a new one which should be hitting stores outside of Australia soon.

The aim of the game is to either create a line of cogs which allow you to spin the Master Cog, or place cogs so that your opponents Base Cog cannot spin.

The truth is though that the game is also a lot of fun just creating funky patterns with the pieces.

I don't know, but I think the fact that you piont guns (admitedly foam ones) qualifies as kind of weird or different. I mean, I have yet to find anybody who did not want to try it, but still when you ask most "normal" people to play a game, I don't think they would expect to be pointing guns at each other. Or in the case of the expansions throwing ninja stars of foamy doam at each other.
