Is it just me? Look, I don't want to get tagged as some sort of green ink merchant. The sort of person that stands on street corners advising all comers to wear a tinfoil hat to stop the CIA from controlling your mind but...

Some games, just a few. The gameplay is great, neat mechanic, nice theme but...

Somehow there is just something, perhaps one action or a point you always reach that just niggles and niggles and niggles because, in the context of the theme, it is just not logical. And it gets worse over time. It builds with every play. One day you blurt it out and are ignored. Then suddenly people don't want to play this game with you. They are afraid you are going to start banging on about the same old point over and over again.

Are you following me?

Let me explain by way of an example. Then please, add more, show me I am not alone. wow

-"G'day! I'm Captain So-And-So, come to join your brand spanking new vessel. And isn't she a beauty! Let me just get my luggage in and get started. I take it that this nice, roomy space with all mod cons is my cabin?"

-(Shipyard manager) "Err... No. It belongs to the good mr. D.Aylightrobbery, a renowned businessman who's chartered a trip with us to the Colonies."

-"But that's highly unusual, normally the best cabin in the ship would be reserved for the Master... Never mind then, I'll take this less fancy spot right here - at least it's directly behind the bridge."

-"Terribly sorry sir, but that's where the Chief Officer lives... He's been very busy with the working-in of the ship, you know..."

-"Darn! What about that dingy cupboard?"

-"No can do. 2nd Mate's, you see."

-"Into the lazareth then! Long walk to the bridge, but..."

-"Ahem, that'd be, like, totally our pleasure, but, you see... The High-, Mid- and Lowlands Regiment is already booked in there, on their way to put down one of those bothersome native revolts... But (always) look at the bright side of life, Sir. It's not that you'd have any time to spend in the cabin anyway - this design is totally untested and very haphazardly planned to some obscure secret government contract. Actually, it doesn't even have any sails, engine or propellers. Luckily, the current in the canal will take it along at a nicely 1-knot pace. I'm sure you'll be required on the bridge at all times, especially during the maiden voyage, and probably afterwards too"

-"I just remembered that I need to see a man about a coal train. Bon voyage!"

"Look ma! I sold some goods in town for these 4 coins. We're rich!"

"Sorry pa, but we can't keep all those. You'll have to throw some away."

"What? Why would we do that?"

"You know we can only store coins in the barn, and right now there isn't enough space for all those coins.

"What? Are you kidding me? Our barn is big enough to hold 4 loads of fish, or wood, or anything! All we have in there now is two coins!"

"Yup, but there's only room for 2 more."

"Four coins fills up a whole barn? Really? Obviously I need to build another barn."

"Sure, you could build another barn or two, but those new ones will only be able to hold 2 coins each."

Pa shakes his head in disbelief.

I love this game. I have but a few problems with it...
Where is the party hen they are not at an active location??
Are they just travelling down the road to their next location, even if they may not know where they are going yet?

Also,
"Man, that goblin sniper looks nasty."
"Ah, him? We cannot deal with him just yet"
"Why not? I'm pumped!"
"For one, we cannot fight him because there are other enemies to fight first."
"But he is slowly killing our party! I want to fight him now!"
"Ah, but you forgot tht he will just it there longer until we endanger ourself with 48 threat. We can also use Gandalf to fight him instead."

"YOU SHALL NOT PASS" can be heard in the background.

"?? Well, those Gladden Fields look like a place that we need to visit."
"Sorry, but we MUST go to the East Bight first. It's closer. Afterward, we should at least accomplish something on our quest, right? It's what we are here to do, right?"

Stalwart (Starks only)
When a card with the “Stalwart” keyword is
killed or discarded from play, it is placed on the
top of its owner’s deck
instead of being placed in
the dead or discard pile.

Spoiler alert for this one.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Of all the Starks, the one who is killed at the beginning of the series is the character they chose to have this Stalwart keyword? Is this a joke?

There was supposed to be an earth-shattering KABOOM!
mbmbmbmbmb
One of my favourite games. While I don't have a problem with the following as it works in-game, it is rather odd.

-------------
A successful French Merchant Player ship leaves the friendly waters of Basse-Terre. They signal greetings to the French naval vessel patrolling the waters.

French Player Captain: We are blessed by the presence of our faithful French Navy. I've heard rumor of a Spanish naval vessel near San Juan. I may be a lowly merchant, but we French are at war with the Spanish, and I'd prefer not to tangle with them. Off to St. Maarten we go, to make a tidy profit on this cargo of rum!

--Days later, As the French merchant leaves the port of St. Maarten after a successful trade, they spot the Spanish naval vessel, which has moved into the area. The Spanish ship spots our French merchant and closes into range.

French Player Captain: Avast! There's nothing for it. We can't escape her now without a fight. We'll fire a round of cannon, and then try our best to skirt to the south and make for safe territory. Our galleon is a fine vessel and I'm no slouch, but I'd rather not fight with a Man-O-War!

--The two ships engage. The French Player Captain uses his superior skill to broadside the Spanish vessel. Loaded with chain shot, his cannons tear through the masts of the Spanish ship!

French Player Captain: We've disabled her! That Spanish vessel is a sitting duck! Prepare to sink her, and teach that upstart Spanish nation a lesson they'll not soon forget! We'll be greeted as heroes, and might even get a commendation from His Majesty! Glory shall be mine!

--The French Merchant Player steers circles around the disabled Spanish ship and shoots her to ribbons. She sinks into the abyss, with a triumphant cheer from the French crew; a crew that has avoided all conflict and has seen their fill of battle for the rest of their lives.

French Player Captain: We've taken a hit to the hull, but we're in good shape. Let's head to St. John to sell our new cargo of sugar cane, and we'll repair there.

--As the French Merchant enters the seas of St. John, an English Naval Vessel spots them and turns towards them, signaling in semaphore, "French vessel, you are a known pirate and are wanted in relation to crimes against the Spanish Crown. Prepare to be boarded".

French Player Captain: Hmmm, it seems the English care not that we French are at war with the Spanish. You there, signal to them that we were attacked and retaliated only in self defense. We mean no harm.

--The English Navy does not respond to the communique, and turns to engage the French Merchant.

French Player Captain: It seems self-defense isn't a viable alibi. Cursed English! At our first chance, let's escape to the South West and head to the safetey of French waters where OUR naval ship will protect us! I fear the Dutch will be just as aggressive towards us.

--The French Merchant trades shots with the English ship. The English cannon miss their target, and the French Merchant manages to escape towards their home waters of Basse-Terre.

French Player Captain: Safe at last. Home sweet home! And look, there is our faithful French navy, ready to protect us. Men, prepare to make dock. We'll need to repair the ship. Perhaps Basse-Terre will be in need of this sugar cane. All is not lost. We will find a way to clear our names. We are no pirates, and surely the English and Dutch can be convinced of our innocence. We will be welcomed with open arms as heroes, for it seems our deeds against the aggressive Spanish nation have proceeded us!

--As the French Merchant gets within range of communication, they signal a friendly greeting to the French Naval ship.

French Player Captain: Ah, look gentlemen! Was I not correct? The navy is escorting us into port. Perhaps the governor is there to greet us!

--Suddenly, the French Naval ship signals to the French Player Merchant, "You are wanted for crimes against the Spanish Crown. Prepare to be boarded!"

French Player Captain: What! What is this nonsense! We are AT WAR with the Spanish! I fought only in self defense! Merde! You there, signal back immediately! Tell them.... BOOOOOOOM

--The French Naval ship opens fire and blasts the French Merchant out of the water.

The End.

--------------------------------------

Loooong story short: If you attack a navy ship for any reason whatsoever, you are from that point forward a pirate, and even your own nation will hunt you down. Context be damned! War? Self defense? They are of little consequence when you are blasting ships in important trade routes. Beware ye Merchants & Marauders, for these waters are treacherous indeed!

Edit: it's worth pointing out that if the French Merchant ran from the Spanish Naval ship and did NOT sink or board it, they would not have incurred a bounty. But the fact remains that if you destroy a ship from a nation you're at war with, everyone will hate you including your own nation! (The NPC pirates will be your friends though! arrrh)

Our intrepid heroes -Earth's last hope- are wandering in the maze that is the secret base, desperately searching for Necreaux's doomsday weapon...

A: "Argh! A giant mechanical zombie ape! It is attacking!"
A manages to shoot the horror with his gun and throws himself to the floor, while a metal fist goes through the space where his head has been a moment before.

The creature is focused on A, and this gives B an easy target. His laser beam hits the monster's right arm.
B: "That's two! But we are tired and wonunded -we cannot keep..."

The ape roars and throws itself at B!
A: "C! Do something!!"

C the ninja is ready. His katana moves in a swift and deadly arc, and kills B on the spot.

The istant B's inanimate body touches the floor, also the monster collapses.

Rules explanation
When you encounter a monster, the number of hits it can take are defined as equal to the number of members of your team.
So if you fight with a team of 2, the monsters will have 2 hit points, and so on.
If the team gets split, the monsters each new team will face have as many hits points as the number of heroes in that half-team.
The number of hits it can take are always equal to the number of members in your team.
I mean it.
If the monster kills one of your heroes, his max HP goes automatically down by 1 point. If then it has been hit enough times before, the monster dies.

...no, you can not really attack an ally.

"O the backpacker's life for me! Fie on the bourgeoisie who book a chalet 4 weeks ahead. Fie on even the wanna-be who think they're living free, just because they arrive into port without a reservation! Bundled into windowless vans by evil-looking "family members", given no choice in the matter, sleeping in whatever chalet they are told to.

No, only in my own heart lives true freedom. I wander freely, take my time, examine the signs placed by innkeepers who actually solicit my business. When a resort has no room, I happily wander on and sleep on the beach. My rules, my way!

Oh, I forgot to mention. There is a neat law on this island. If a resort has an available room, they HAVE to let me in, even if someone else actually has the room reserved. Then, when those poor suckers arrive, the resort has to pay a penalty for not having a room for them.

Wouldn't you think the resort could just turn me away when I arrive, if they don't want me? After all, I'm A BACKPACKER WITHOUT A RESERVATION. Nope, they have to take me."

(Disclaimer: I actually like the way this makes the gameplay work, adds a bit of chaos and some motivation to try to manipulate the backpacker. I just think it violates the theme.)

Your goal is to make sure that all the monsters are scared off so they don't completely surround the bed and ruin your sleep. Get 5 out at a time, and you lose!

Solution: Each monster is scared of a toy, so if you can show them that they will run away scared into the closet!

flip! no. flip! no. flip! yay! It's a doll! Hairy monster...you get in that closet!

...wait a minute.

Did you say in the....closet...? I doooonnnn't waaaannnntttt MONSTERS in my closet!? I thought as children we were trying to keep them out of the closet!

"Chief, we just saved 7 people, but we've got two more people in the bedroom!"

"That's okay, son. Let's call it a day, we've met our limit, and we've done our duty! Everyone, pull out!"

"Hunh?"

"Look Captain, I found a red skull!"

"Oh, Great job private, now we have to ignore this courage the Sergant found."

"But Captain, didn't the General find a Blue and a white skull."

"Oh, yeah. Now we have enough item points to find a Flame-Thrower!"

Signal Officer: Fleet Admiral! A message from our 2 ships in Bahia. The Commadore wants to sail to the uncharted waters outside of Rio de Janiero. He's convinced that there will be excellent sites for Sugar colonies around there.

Fleet Admiral: That sounds like a good idea.

Signal Officer: But wait! We also have a message from our 2 ships in Guiné! The Commadore there wants to sail to the uncharted waters outside of Angola. He's convinced that there will be excellent sites for Gold colonies around there.

Fleet Admiral: That sounds like a good idea, too. Too bad we can only explore 1 region in a turn. We'll have to explore one of these regions now and the other the next time we go sailing, which won't be for, hmm, at least a month. Please signal the Commadore in Guiné to explore Angola, and signal the Commadore in Bahia to give everybody shore leave in town. He can go exploring next time there is an opportunity for it.

Signal Officer: But why? These two squadrons aren't connected to each other, and both have the necessary ships for exploring! They are both waiting for orders. I could just tell them both to get on with it!"

To us rugged, hardy treasure-hunters, snakes rank just about the same as EXPLOSIONS on the list of dangerous things.

And don't get me started on scorpions.

I can feed my people with pottery.
Also, apparently people with smaller food reserves are LESS affected by drought.

As much as I love this game, one of the victory conditions is a bit awkward...

sauron Mwahahaha! After much work, I've conquered Minas Tirith, Helm's Deep, Rivendell, and Lothlorien! With just a little more effort, Middle Earth will be mine!

Nazgul: Urgent news, my lord. The remnants of those pesky men have conquered Mt. Gundabad and Umbar!

sauron NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! *dies*
