Is it just me? Look, I don't want to get tagged as some sort of green ink merchant. The sort of person that stands on street corners advising all comers to wear a tinfoil hat to stop the CIA from controlling your mind but...

Some games, just a few. The gameplay is great, neat mechanic, nice theme but...

Somehow there is just something, perhaps one action or a point you always reach that just niggles and niggles and niggles because, in the context of the theme, it is just not logical. And it gets worse over time. It builds with every play. One day you blurt it out and are ignored. Then suddenly people don't want to play this game with you. They are afraid you are going to start banging on about the same old point over and over again.

Are you following me?

Let me explain by way of an example. Then please, add more, show me I am not alone. wow

Or 1829, or 1825, or 1853, and quite possibly plenty of other 18xx titles too...

The railway age is just starting, there is money to be made. We've got a good sized city and it's quite close to another good sized city (so close it's on the same hex!). So do we build a railway straight to the most obvious place? Or do we not build any track from either town until railways are fairly well established in the land, preferring to build across country to smaller places and/or places further apart, and when we do get around to building a station in each of the close cities we make a point of building track from them away from one another, rather than connecting them?

Hmmmmm...

Progress is going smoothly. You have built 5 settlements, living off the land, obtaining resources, and want to build a 6th settlement, but you can't! It doesn't matter that you have the resources to do so. You need to build a city before you can build another settlement! Too much upkeep? Don't want to piss off the gods of Catan? But WHY!? Because the settlers of Catan don't actually build settlements. They're transported from off the island, carried, and carefully placed to where they're supposed to be, that's why! And they only made five of them for their whole duration on Catan.

This Pub seems a bit modest. Maybe I should upgrade it a bit. Some portcullis for the front door... a bit of marble for the floors... a couple of statues... and a nice new lick of paint. That's it. Looks nice! I'll call it... "Eremitage". That sounds cool and catchy!

In Soccer Tactics, I'm told the gameplay and strategies available reflect real-world soccer very well.

With one exception: Every time you take a shot on the goal, the relative position of defenders is 100% irrelevant. You have a 50% chance to sink it, and the remaining 50% is divided between a Goal Kick and a Corner Kick - both of which require (in the real world) intervention by a defensive player.

I'm hesitant to include this, since it is the most wonderful game I have played. But, there's no escaping the inconsistency in the way the collatoral damage rules are set up. You have more chance of accidentally bombing a school/hospital/whatever with a single bomb than by dropping the full bombloads from three B-52s, and that's a little odd...

You got to love rule 1.23 which gives the Allies extra VP if the Germans don't make an effort to defend France. It reads in part "This rule exists only to keep the Germans from cutting and running when the campaign begins. Should the Germans lose Paris early in spite of a good faith effort to retain it, do not award these points." Your good faith effort is my half arsed attempt. Really, I have had players leave a couple of low grade Divisions in Paris, claim that is a good effort and want to avoid giving me the VP! What is the definition of a "good faith effort"?

While I am having a go at The Gamers and the SCS series (which I do enjoy playing). Rule 3.6 provides for extra Israeli Armour losses due ATGM's for turns 1 to 3. If a Star of David comes up on the Combat Table and Egyptian Leg, Mech, Airborne, Airmobile or Commando is involved, extra step loss to the Israeli Armour. OK, as the Israeli player I will avoid attacking for the first 3 turns till this rule goes away (I have to take the casualties whilst on defense).
