The following is a summary of various reasons why I think our hobby is such a great one, and what sets it apart from so many other activities and pastimes. I realize that in many cases I'm simply stating the obvious - I don't think many of these statements are terribly profound - but I wanted a single list where I could record these ideas. When I read the list all at once, it makes me feel like this hobby really is different from any other.

Feel free to add your own thoughts about what it is about gaming that attracts you, and those you know, to it.

Here are some of the things I enjoy about gaming:

Gives Different People A Common Goal for the Length of the Game

I think it's so awesome how you can take two people who have nothing in common except that they are both willing to sit down and try a game together, who suddenly have a common goal for an hour - to win the game or at least have fun trying. They can have totally opposite views on everything under the sun, but when they're playing a game, whether they're strangers or not, there is an instant common bond for as long as the game lasts.

There are few things like a good game to bring people together.

It allows the kid inside all of us to "play with toys" without everyone watching us thinking that we're "playing with toys". It's toys with a purpose. I can even do the green-army-men in something like Memoir'44, and more people will think it's cool than strange!

Defies the Age Boundary

This hobby can cross the age divide in ways few hobbies can. Almost any game is great for 12 and up, but I can enjoy most games I own with my nine-year-old too. It's the perfect activity for grandparents and grandchildren.

Of course, it can cross just about every other kind of boundary segregating people as well - even the language barrier sometimes.

Engages the Mind in a Fun Way

Gaming provides fun activity for the mind - especially when you have to work all day thinking for purposes that aren't all that fun. I work as a computer programmer, and I find that one of the most relaxing things I can do for myself after a stressful day of hurting my brain at work is to use that same brain for more recreational ends over a gameboard. The brain muscles are still working out, but in a way that makes it enjoyable to think and solve puzzles.

Is a Great Way to Enjoy the Ambience of the Setting

I find that one of the best ways to enjoy a room set up nicely around me is to play a game in it. I can soak in the firelight, the Christmas tree and all the decorations, and enjoy the music wafting in from another room while leaning back in my chair and waiting for my partner to do her turn. There are other activies that allow the mood and ambience to be taken in too, but reading, watching movies, or building model cars just aren't the same somehow. Reading and movies can be too absorbing to notice much else, and many other hobbies simply require too much constant attention to bask in one's surroundings.

There's nothing like a card table by the fireplace.

Any game with a map can encourage a player to start looking up cities, states, and countries in their atlas afterwards. Who can play Hammer of the Scots without feeling a need to brush up on their 14th century Scottish history?

Gaming helps us develop skills of graceful winning and losing, and provides great opportunities for praising and encouraging our fellow gamers. This is especially great for kids still struggling with their sense of confidence and competency. The great thing is that it's all within a setting where the outcome really doesn't matter.

Is a Natural Setting for Role-Play Acting

Gaming often gives a natural avenue for role-play acting where anywhere else it would just be wierd. It often happens without anyone meaning to - using the Pirate lingo in Pirate's Cove, or talking in a bad Russian accent while playing Kremlin.

Allows Reflection and Refining of Games We Play in Real Life

Games often reflect and refine the games we play as part of real life - whether in office politics, relationships with people we don't fully trust, ideas for making a project a success - or whatever. They're a non-confrontational way of going through some of those same issues and even can help identify where we're using the same strategy in real-life.

All that to say that games (or meta-games as some would call them) are simply a natural part of life that everyone takes part in and can relate to. Sometimes gaming can even be helpful in learning to solve real-world problems.

Opens Up a Niche World that Most People Don't Know Exists

It's just fun to explore a whole niche world that most people don't even know exists, but many secretly wish existed - filled with quality products. It takes what many people enjoyed as a kid to a whole new level - which is really cool. It gives a sense of being able to rise above the drivel of the world found everywhere else (like Monopoly) - not in a snobbish sort of way - just in an enlightened way. We all feel a strong desire to have as many people enlightened with us as possible.

How many times have you heard your friends and acquaintances state: Where do you get these games?!? I've never even heard of them!

Is All About Social Interaction

This hobby is all about the socializing. You can participate in just about any hobby with other people if you want to, but few other hobbies demand participating with others like this one. And the people that are really into this hobby are often natural socializers, or at least really nice people.

Games are wonderful for breaking the ice, generating laughter, and getting to know others - even complete strangers. You're also able to get a very good idea about a person's character simply by playing a game with them.

Is an Easy Hobby for New People to Get Into and Relate To

Almost everyone has participated in this hobby at one point or another in their lives, even if it's simply when playing Monopoly at a friend's house as a child. It's something everyone can relate to in some way. I think that makes it something that most people are willing to try again as adults, especially if they know how enthusiastic you are about it.

There are so many great games for getting people into this hobby, as evidenced by hundreds of geeklists and podcasts on the subject of "gateway games".

Is Relatively Inexpensive

Compared to many other hobbies, boardgaming involves far less expense, even if you start a collection. Take 10 great games worth $15-$30 each, and you'll have enough to keep you busy for a very long time. Compare that to going to 10 or 20 movies. It's amazing bang for your buck!
