After looking over some other GeekLists, session reports and game comments, I started to form a nebulous idea that I thought would eventually make a good GeekList on its own. I started to look over my collection and started to think about the moves that hurt to make...

They may be sub-optimal moves to stall or buy time, they may be the absolute worst move possible to you, but you have to take it anyway, perhaps the kind of move that just turns your stomach into knots -- or it may just be an analysis of the game and coming to the realization that "if I do this, I'm totally screwed." or "oh no... not again!"

What do you think?
What game moves do you absolutely hate to have to make?
Is it because it's the worst move for you, or too good a move for another player?
Is it a symptom of the game design, or a positional element of the gameplay?

Placing a tile to enlarge a chain in which you have minimal stock. You hate to do it, but sometimes late in the game, all the other tiles cause mergers which you want to avoid even more.

Scoring a point for your opponent.

I've only played this a few times, but it seemed like at least twice in each game, I was forced to pick a card and play it that scored a point (out of very few needed to win) for my opponent. Funny, I never got any points that way.

Sacrificing a pipeline

Sometimes you just have to play a tile piece that destroys a nearly completed connection of high scoring pipes. Sighs of pain are often heard during the game when players have to make these sacrifices.

Calling Havoc when you have weak cards

The temptation of collecting one more card in preparation for battle is always there, but if Havoc isn’t called before it makes it around to the peacekeeper, then everyone (except the peacekeeper) is forced to discard a card. In addition, the lowest battle card goes away reducing the amount of available victory points in the game.

Being forced to take that pile of action cards you seriously overpriced because you misjudged how badly your opponents might want it

You divided the cards thinking that your opponents would NEED to take that overpriced pile, but guess what? They didn't take the bait. Now you're stuck with that overpriced pile which is of no use to you and you've wasted half the round. Good job.

As the Central Powers I hate it when the best move is to retreat behind the Rhine, because it would historically have lost the war for reasons that aren't reflected in game.

Conversely as the Entente I hate having to play the Italian entry card as anything other than the event the first time I see it, since doing so will inevitably lead to my other hate; having to bring the Italians on when there are multiple CP armies waiting on the Italian border.

Using the Gandalf cards earlier than Mordor

The Hobbits are four steps away from completing Helm's Deep. All Sam has to do is survive this tile draw to let Frodo finish off the main track...then BAM! Sam draws an Event Tile. He has to perform an action he cannot do, or the Hobbits have to discard the very cards that they need. You can't sacrifice the most Ring resistant Hobbit. Using the Ring most likely won't move you on fast enough. You have to use Gandalf simply to survive. But life in Mordor's suddenly got a whole lot harder...

Keeping a mediocre ferry.

A novel (as in "novelty") mechanic Iron Dragon has that other crayon games don't is the use of ferries to travel across the water. Land on a port, draw a ferry card, and the card tells you how fast you can move each turn -- except that some ferries move faster than others, and you must spend an entire turn to discard and redraw a ferry. A slow ferry's a no-brainer -- if you have enough gold, pitch it and draw a new ferry card. But if you have a mediocre ferry, pitching and redrawing means a fifty-percent chance of drawing a slower ferry *and* not even moving this turn.
