There's always a lot of talk about the next Kramer game, but rarely is it mentioned that most of these games are co-designed with Kiesling. It's pretty obvious to me that Kiesling is being slighted here, as he's definitely bringing something magical to the games that Kramer can't achieve alone. I have a feeling that the Kramer/Kiesling relationship is more one of peers (Green Arrow to Green Lantern) than one of superhero/sidekick (Robin to Batman).

I've fallen in love with the few co-designed games of theirs that I've played. Becoming interested, I've searched out all of the games that they've designed together and I've decided to list them here so that everyone could benefit from all of these games being listed in one place. Maybe if I learn how to create a wiki, that would be an even better idea.

p.s. It's no accident that Action Points and Analysis Paralysis share the same initials for abbreviation. And it's no coincidence that fun rhymes with sun.

The first appearance of the Kramer/Kiesling duo was in 1998. Four short games, all of them looking slightly fun, but ultimately forgettable, were released. I have no idea which game came first so I'm listing them in alphabetical order.

Dreizehnte Holzwurm.

This is apparently a game of matching cards in groups with a cute tacked-on worm theme.

Haste Worte

The team that would later bring us games that completly fry our brains moved on from worms to a party game where players bid on who has come up with the best words in response to a question. Seems highly rated here, but I'll pass.

Theme: Parachute out of airplanes and land closest to the coast.

The simultaneous action selection makes this game sound interesting to me. There's always a bit of risk-taking and mystery. I'd like to try this game as I supect that it may be underrated.

Another trick-taking game that people seem to feel "meh" about.

Four games in a year (1998) and I'm not sure that any of them point to the grand games that are about to come.

Okay, it's 1999, and Kramer/Kiesling are about to break through to the big time.

So, uh, what is this? I don't know. A lapse in judgment, I suppose. A resource management game about collecting popular recording artists?

The description here on the 'Geek gives a hint at the relationship that Kramer/Kiesling had,
"The game rules state that the designers produced this game by phone and fax, without ever meeting."

Huh?

Here's where things get really interesting.

Tikal, rightful winner of the SdJ. The first in the so-called Mask Trilogy. This is where the K/K relationship really heats up. The action point allowance system is fantastic. Yes, it leads to analysis paralysis in many individuals. Yes, when not using the auction variant, the tile draws can be brutally unfair. And, yes, this is an excellent game.

This came out in the same year as Tikal? How did these two men design two games that are so excellent in such a short time period, especially considering that all of their games together up to this point seem so mediocre? I don't know.
This game also won the SdJ and deservedly so. I played it for the first time this past weekend and it may be my favorite K/K design.

I just got this in a trade, but haven't had the chance to play it yet. From all accounts, it is a bit of a brain-burner and perhaps the game by this team that lends itself most to analysis paralysis. For whatever reason, nothing happened in 2002. Maybe the duo was too hot and needed some cooling off time. No matter, in 2003, the duo reformed and presented the world with Mexica.
More of the same action point system, this time the river/raft idea allowed a nice mix of mobility and cutting people off from points seems to be more prevalant.

Players are building a city, but don't want to be too proud about it (let their color show) or the Chieftan will notice and reprimand you for being too proud.

Again, the two skip a year and nothing happens in 2003. At this point, they've completed the Mask Trilogy, creating what many consider to be their best games and some of the best Euro games around, period. That's a lot to live up to and many of the games that come out in the next few years receive a very mixed reaction.
In 2004, K/K release Maharaja.
This game has become fairly popular, earning its way into the BGG Top 50. Yet, still, it seems like this one hasn't been as widely disseminated and revered as the previous games. There are still many, many people who have yet to try Maharaja. I own this one and have read through the rules, but it hasn't hit the table yet. I'm looking forward to it.

Complaints start to form, though, that the game is too chaotic, and comparisons to earlier games leave this one paling in comparison

I think that most people that are disappointed in this were looking for the Meaty games that the duo had delivered in the past. No one was prepared for the Milk that was offered here. But it does look creamy, and it's alledgedly good for the bones.

Bison looks good, but many have been pretty harsh toward it, mostly damning with faint praise. Why would anyone go out of their way to buy an "okay" game? Nevertheless, I remain interested in this one. There may not be anything new or too excited, but, come on, K and K can do no wrong.

Celtica is another game that seems to get bad press because it's more of a family-style game. Kramer and Kiesling have proved themselves as wafflers, waffling between the most meaty, "thinky," brain-burning type games to games that are easily accessible to a wide audience. If there were a gaming revoluion in the US, this game may fly off Toys R Us shelves much quicker than Java would.

Finally, we have the future to look forward to. As of right now, in 2007, we know that Trapper is in the works and will be out shortly...

"The basic game of Trapper is a simple game in the style of Verflixxt and Celtica that's suitable for a wide target audience. Good luck and tactics are about equal on the scales.

The somewhat more demanding version offers more tactical possibilities. How should one advance with the animal gathering? Which is more lucrative, getting a few larger and very valuable canoes or bringing many small canoes with different species to the market? Both strategies can lead to success."

Based on the novel by Frank Schätzing, continuing the Kosmos line of literature-based games. The world is facing an ecological catastrophe caused by previously unknown marine life forms. Each player represents a nation sending their scientists out to confront the threat.

The action cards form the core of the game. For each round, the cards are shuffled and placed in a row. Each player in turn order takes the leftmost card from the row, until there are no more cards left. Instead of the leftmost card, players can also buy a different card by paying with victory points.

At the end of each round, players score points according to the sizes of their largest research networks. At the end of the game, extra points are given out based on whether research stations are connected to the center of the game board.
