These pairings exclude trivia games and only deal with the same era/topic.

Please post best examples of each. I leave to others to add the best
fantasy games, Gladiator, War and Peace, Gettysburg, etc.

Trying to avoid those that just have the same name but not the same flavor;
like War and Peace-Krieg und Frieden.

Edited to put games in order of BGG ranking - unranked then best first.

Please add your best Movie-Book-Game connections or give a "thumbs up"
to those you like...

TV shows are fair game, right? If you need to make the stretch...consider the multiple TV movies this series spawned.

This game captures the intrigue and action of this award-winning scifi series remarkably well...and for several reasons. Most obviously are the direct quotes on each card..reminding players of poignant moments from the series. But to me the real beauty is the variety of play in different phases. You start with each player choosing a different race...with different types/strengths of ships, different cards available, different characters/abilities which were very faithful to the show. The Narn were aggressive. The Shadows very powerful.

Each turn...a player makes purchases of ships and colonies, moves through the hexagonal map...and may engage in ship to ship combat. Exploration, development, alliances and fighting. But the magical ingredient is the voting phase. The center of the hexagonal tile map is the Babylon 5 space station. "Our last best hope for peace." On each players turn they have the opportunity to call a vote by playing a vote card. Then the wheeling and dealing starts. Votes may help all players (some more than others), but more often they are a mixture of benefitting some and harming some. You may be limited in your combat options, income may change hands, characters may be voted out of play, almost anything you can think of. This is where the game models the show so completely. During play, we've often had very convoluted negotiations where treaties are formed and broken, players are persuaded (usually through bribes and promises) to vote to pass a measure that otherwise harms them. This brings balance to the game...in that military might does not always serve to win the game. You must be prepared for diplomacy also...or suffer the consequences.

I watch episodes now (since the nice DVD compilations have been released) and it reminds me of specific game sessions.

Lemony Snicket's Perilous Parlour Game is a lot of fun when playing 3 kids (as the Beaudalaire orphans) against an adult (the evil Count Olaf). Definitely captures the theme, tension, and details of the book series. The movie is coming out next month.

Another excellent evocation of a popular SF/F book series.
But, like the above two, the quality of the actual gameplay is somewhat in doubt. Get the Chaosium "Gold-Box" edition just to look at, and the AH reprinted as a player copy.

Agree. Finally got to play it.
The mechanic's ugliness sadly upstages
the component's beauty.

Wish there were worthwhile variants...

From being attacked by Kalidahs, to the Scarecrow getting stuck in the middle of a river; from being attacked by Black Bees to melting the Wicked Witch of the West, all the major events in the book are there.

The only weird thing is that they did not get the color of the lands correct.

I like the concept of this list -- and would like it more if it featured direct tie-ins. Dune, being obvious tie-in, serves as a good example; Hammer of the Scots only has some subject matter in common.

While I'm on a movie kick, did anybody else notice this in the movie Gladiator?

A very brief cut, right after the opening battle is joined and the Romans and barbarians are flaying away, there is one bearded shaggy haired extra right in the middle of the melee just standing there holding his spear and grinning like a stoned out idiot... "Whoa dude. This sooooo cool."

The Games of War: A Treasury of Rules for Battles with Toy Soldiers, Ships and PlanesThe Games of War: A Treasury of Rules for Battles with Toy Soldiers, Ships, and Planes is capable of duplicating any number of movies. How well depends on the judge who hosts the game. For example, I've done Beau Geste (the Gary Cooper version, "I promise you.") with the Conte Collectible playset and the Hot Sand, Hotter Lead rules inside The Games of War. You can shore up the defenses by propping up dead legionaires on the battlements.
The Alamo ok?

The Two Towers from Lord of the Rings?

Or, if Pirates a la Carribean is your desire, Cannon and Cutlas from the same book let you shiver timbers to any pirate movie you choose. And don't forget Star Wars! You are only limited by your toys and your imagination.
