I had some time over the weekend to reflect on my blessings despite all the grunk going on around me. And a big part of that reflection was realizing and appreciating what a great group of people I get to game with. And how great gamers are in general. People I've never met - or only met/known through BGG - have been so kind to me over the years, it's amazing.

I've listed some of the Random Acts of Geekness I've been blessed with. Please share your experiences and thank the gamers who have made this hobby -- and this community -- such a wonderful thing to be a part of.

What do you think?
What are some of the Random Acts of Geekness you've experienced?
How else has the gaming hobby or your fellow Geek influenced your life?
If you could meet one of your anonymous benefactors, what would you say?

Rokkyt (Bill Johanning)

I received a great looking copy of Dragon Lords from a friend when he got out of gaming, but it sat forever unplayed... Then a fellow geek proposed a trade for a game I wanted in exchange for Dragon Lords. I quickly accepted, but as I got Dragon Lords ready for the trade, I was horrified to find it was missing the rules! I GeekMailed a few Geeks who owned Dragon Lords, looking for help, hoping someone would send me a photocopied set of the rules.

Rokkyt went and did one better - before I knew it, he had scanned the entire rulebook in high res and emailed me a zip file with everything in there. I was able to burn a copy of the rules to a CD and print out a great looking set to include in the trade. The trade went off without a hitch, and the tradee was grateful to have the CD as well as the hardcopy.

kvn299 Kevin Wood

Shortly after returning from GenCon 2005, there was a letter waiting for me back home from Kevin Wood. I knew his "easy fireball" Ubergeekbadge and knew of him on the 'Geek, but certainly wasn't expecting him to send me a new, unpunched copy of the Wizard Promo Tile from Fantasy Flight's edition of Kingdoms -- simply because he knew I liked the game. Thanks, Kevin!

Kevin Wood (kvn299).

Kevin sold me his copy of the expansion to Supremacy: Neutron Bombs and Killer Satellites. When I got it, much to my surprise, he also included the Field Marshall's Handbook, a nice addition to my Supremacy collection.

Hats off to Kevin! meeple

Ken Mixon (Longbow)

In an earlier Geek List (regarding disparities in ratings), I mentioned my love for Don't Go to Jail, and how it reminded me of long night of gaming with my late mother. Ken saw my note and Geek Mailed me, saying he'd send me a copy--even paying for shipping. It arrived within just a couple of short days.

Inside was a nice hand-written note from Ken.

It literally brought a tear to my eye, what a nice gesture this was--and I'm not ashamed to admit that!

Thanks again, Ken. Anytime you're in Phoenix (or in SE Michigan when I finally move home), the beer's on me.

When I was putting my 3M collection together a while back, I picked up a "near-mint, complete" copy of Phlounder off of Ebay. Well, the copy was neither near-mint nor complete. While I did get a small refund on the game, that didn't help out with the completeness. Enter the old Game Parts Exchange Geeklist created by bengkohn. One of the posters there, CameronL, had tiles available for Phlounder. He sent the tile I needed free of charge. When the postal service destroyed the envelope (and set the tile free), he sent me a second tile. Thanks to both of these guys.

Being a lover of train games of all stripes, this is one I just had to get. Unfortunately, they are hard to come by in the States, and they tend to be expensive. I picked up a copy off the marketplace here for a really good price that ended up missing a couple of track sections. I was able to find one of the pieces via the Parts List mentioned above from ennui who, if my memory serves, sent me the piece free from Great Britain (where the game is much easier to come by). (I think he needed a green caboose at the time to complete his set, so if anyone can help him out, please do.) He was then able to put me in contact with the guy he got some of his missing pieces from, one Rob Haley. Though to my knowledge not a member of BGG, he too send me the final needed piece free of charge.

Another game I sought out when trying to put together my 3M game collection. Again, another incomplete "complete" game that was missing a couple of cards. I posted this one to the game parts exchange list and six months later I was contacted by richtoosoon with some spare cards.

Andrei read a comment I had made about some component problems with my copy of Conquest of the Fallen Lands (some scuffed and discolored hexes, and two packets of blue stones too close in color to use for play). He sent me a GeekMail and offered to replace the components, and sent out the package very quickly.

Thanks again, Andrei!

I don't subscribe much to anything, so when I get a GeekMail I know that it's personal.

At BGG.CON, I met a lot of cool people. That became quickly accepted. I met River Otter while I was carnival barking for more Twilight Imperium players. River Otter was easily the most amiable guy I met at the con. His love for gaming and TI3 was instantly contagious.

A few weeks after the con, out of nowhere, I get a GeekMail from River Otter and a 15 gift from him, a Holidays gift, in the truest sense. Thanks River Otter. Hope to see you at BGG.CON this year!

Being a software developer, I know how much work it is involved in creating, maintaining, and dealing with all the minutia of a 'site like this.

I really appreciate that he and his partner took the time to create this great 'site!

Yes, gamers are the coolest people around I've been repeatedly impressed by the kindness, intelligence, and good vibes from the many gaming groups I've been involved with over the years. I could fill a small book with stories of showing-up at a new group of gamers and feeling very welcome: on the other hand, the list of bad experiences I've had would not fill half a page.

Gamers are, for the most part, terrific folks!

I bought ASLSK #1 many moons ago, open it, read the rules and close it. Every now and again I would open it again, read the rules and close it once more.

Two years later, I discover BGG and I start reading the rules question for this game, and asking questions myself.

All of them had answers from Jay, answers he has taken the time to recollect, even taking the time to double check the correct answer in consimworld, in long but clear summaries that he posts here. I love this game, and if it wasn't for Jay it would still be unplayed.

Kevin Felker (kevinfelker42)

I flew to Memphis for business last week. Alan and his fellow gamers invited me to join their group for an evening of gaming. Alan picked me up at my hotel and dropped me off at the end of an evening. We played a couple of great games, had some great conversation, and I finally got to put the faces with the names of some geekbuddies.

In advance, I got advice from them and other geeks in the area with tips for traveling to and visiting Shiloh Battlefield. Their advice probably saved me from the expense of at least one major speedtrap, as well as making sure I did the battlefield driving tour, which was definitely worth it.

We have a great network of decent and hospitable people here on BGG. A fine perk of BGG membership.

Tom Jolly is an interesting guy and a great game designer. I met him at a convention about a year ago, only briefly so I didn't expect him to remember me. When I arrived at StrategiCon last Friday I thought out loud that I needed to find a place to sleep - and Tom said I could stay in his room with him!

Between that and his new prototype called Fermat (which is like Set with math), that's what makes Tom Jolly one of the coolest people around.

He went way out of his way for no reason. Good guy.

A few years back,Puck mentioned that he had found a copy of Blackbeard, in nice shape. It might have been an extra copy, I don't remember. I emailed him, asking what he might want in exchange for his copy. To my complete surprise, he answered and said that he didn't really need it, and I could have it if I wanted it. FOR FREE! And, it was in much better shape than my copy. The only reason I can think of why he would gift me so generously (besides the fact that he didn't know me personally) is that he's an all around nice guy who loves games and gaming almost as much as he loves Star Trek, his wife, and his kids.
