Ratings and comments are well and good, but nothing beats a good old-fashioned argument. If you've ever wasted an entire hour debating a friend on whether Abbey Road or Sgt. Pepper is the greater album, you've come to the right place.

The subject: Which game is Knizia's finest design, and why? No holding back, please, no "your mileague may vary" wimpishness -- it's time for full-throated opinionation.

I'm putting five games on this list that seem to me like the obvious contenders: Tigris and Euphrates, Ra, Taj Mahal, Samurai, and Modern Art. If you feel like adding Amun-Re, Ingenious, Through the Desert or Traumfabrik, and arguing for them, feel free.

I'm just going to list the games here. After the list is posted, I'll come back and start the argument in the comment section under one of the games.

I think this list will be most fun if people play both offense and defense -- promoting one selection on its entry, and also commenting on the other entries with rebuttals to the other arguments.

Ra has risen loftily in the rankings since its re-release. Is it actually a contender for Knizia's masterwork, or just enjoying a temporary surge?

This is a great game of wagering and tactical card play all wrapped up in a very cool theme of a legendary monster free for all.

Knizia's genius in creating agonizing gameplay choices combined with an evocative them gets my vote.

I'll go out on a limb and make a choice: Medici.

Now, I haven't played every Knizia game, so of course there may be something out there I will like better. And as for "Masterpiece," I'm not one to attach universality to any word. All I can say is which of his games appeals to me the most, and it's clearly Medici.

Of the games you list, I like three of them well enough (E&T, Ra, Samurai) - but none of them grab like the purity of Medici - and none of them do I like better now than I did a few years ago.

I actually find the other two games you list (Taj Mahal, Modern Art) to be bad games. Again, I don't use "bad" in a universal sense, only in a personal sense. Taj Mahal is boringly repetitious - it's WAY too long for what it is. And Modern Art has more frustration than enjoyment - not what I want in a game. I suppose if all five players in Modern Art were of equal skill, it might not be so frustrating, but every game I ever tried found the different skill levels to throw the game into the frustration zone. Not a place I want to be.

Of his other games I enjoy (I'm not really a Knizia fan, BTW, I only like a few of his games), I used to feel Honeybears was his masterpiece. Talk about purity of design! But the more I played Medici, the more it grabbed me, and the more I played Honeybears, it stayed about the same in my affections (which is a good thing, mind you). Before Honeybears, I used to think En Garde was his perfect game - so pure, so simple, so good. But there's something about turning over those Medici cards one at a time that speaks to me, deeply, and eventually En Garde peaked out in my rankings, but Medici keeps climbing.

In conclusion, I have to say Medici simply because the more I play it, the more I like it, and that's not true for any other Knizia game. You know, I didn't even like Medici the first dozen times I played it! Amazing, eh?

It's got flavors of area control/dominance, auctions, meta-game antics during the 'offering', and production/resource management with farmers. I really enjoy the two-phase aspect of the game where portions of the board are wiped clean and the second age builds upon what happened from the first part of the game.

It's "only" a two player game, but this is a work of genius. To take a game like Stratego where the sides are identical and to mess with the mechanics to make the game asymmetrical but still balanced is a brilliant piece of work. Everyone can see tactics in this game, but what will work depends always on what your opponent is doing.

I love this game. The chaos and screwage factor is great. The long term planning has to include conviencing all the other players what move they have to block while actually planning for another.

It must be played with 4 players though or else it's just a move counter move game, that gets fairly boring to me.

Although Euphrat & Tigris is one of my all-time favorites, I'm going to make the call that the little gem En Garde is Knizzia'a best.

Much like Jell-O, there's always room for En Garde. Simple to play and fast-paced, this game has stood the test of time in my collection and is #1 on my list of games to take when I travel near or far.

It is easy to teach and has been very well received by players of all interests and levels of play. Also, it has a depth of play that is simply missed by most players. Too many dismiss this as a luck-of-the-draw game and abandon it before they have begun to explore the richness of play that it can provide. Twice I have had to raise the bar on my level of play, both times when I introduced the game to someone who played the game often enough to develop an understanding and style of their own.

...that said, it still remains a light, fast and fun game that will fill any time slot available.

Make mine BEOWULF! Oh I know many/most will think I'm smoking crack - but I find this is the Knizia I want to play. I'm not a Reiner patriot like many at the geek. Oh I like lots of his games, and play them frequently. But none rate above an "8" for me. Reiner's games pretty much always work - but they don't tend to draw me in like a better Kramer or Teuber design.

My four highest rated Knizia games are E&T, Ra, New Games in Old Rome, and Beowulf. At one time I did rate E&T higher, but my affection for it has always been a more of a cool respect rather than a deep love.

Of late I am really responding more to tightly themed games. Of Reiner's games NONE have deeply involved themes. His games, in my opinion, offer more of a motif. Beowulf works better as a theme because you have to live with the ramification of the risks you took/didn't take earlier in the game.

I consider this one of his very best games! (with T&E, and Lord of the Rings combined with Friends and Foes)

Has been largely overlooked, maybe because it's not available in English. But with a few words knowledge of German and a little practice everybody can manage.

This is far more stategic than King Arthur, and has an extremely exciting climax. Fighting monsters becomes more and more difficult, and they return faster and faster.

The idea of winning in two ways (monsterpoints when the Island is lost, and all points when the Island is saved) works also very well.

Have played this about 80 times and am still surprised at times! Only laugh a bit at the Standgutsämmlerin (which we translate into the strandwhore in Dutch, sorry)

SO GAMERS WAKE UP AND ENJOY THIS ONE!!
