I'm searching for some nice games that are filled with strategy, but are not too much time-consumming. (about an hour or less)

ok Alain, you bought the game at a low price... and your girlfriend like it but - so sorry about that - i found it rather boring...

(and after all, this geeklist isn't about games for $20 that suit well my girlfriend taste !)

Like China and most of the other smaller area influence games, best with exactly 3 players. Attila is a surprisingly subtle and even slightly counter-intuitive game. There's significant depth of choice and strategy both through hand management and board position manipulation.

Takes China, which isn't as good as Web of Power, and brings it back into contention. Slightly deeper, more confrontational, slightly better rewards for card counters, and of course and like the rest, best with exactly three players.

This is cool. I did not know that a game had been made about Aggersborg. This is one of several viking strongholds found in my country, definitely worth a visit if you ever end up here. Besides 'Aggersborg' at the Limfjord, there was build five other viking strongholds in Denmark and the Danish part of Sweden around 980 by Harald Bluetooth in an attempt to consolidate his power over the kingdom; 'Borgeby' in Scania (Sweden), 'Fyrkat' at the city of Hobro, 'Nonnebakken' below the city of Odense, 'Trelleborg' at the city of Slagelse and finally 'Trelleborg' in Scania (Sweden).

How true!

UR delivers just about as much tension and tough choices as can reasonably be expected to fit into 45 minutes. And as an added bonus, there's a clever 2-player variant in the variants forum ( www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/134571). Works like a charm.

Yes, this is highly tactical, but there is also a lot of strategy. Any game where you are advised to "play the whole board" has to have strategy. Also it usually finishes in under 30 minutes.

this is a terrific game, but differences in skill between two opponents can very easily make this a slaughter, and not much fun for the weaker player.

Row handicapping is possible if you can find two pieces of neutral color which look nothing like Twixt pegs, and which will fit in a hole. One dimension of the board is reduced. The weaker player moves first and has less distance to cross. The neutral color pieces are placed in the two new corners of the grid, which are now out of play. an alternative method is to stretch a large red rubber band around the board to indicate the new red border line.

Of course, getting the weaker player to accept a handicap in the first place is another issue entirely.

So i second this Mr. Jack.

a 2 player game, nice to play back to back switching roles. But be aware you need a complete different mindset for each of the two sides.
Because your goal is so different depending on which side you play.

I agree too. Mr Jack is very good even without the expansion. But the expansion adds replayability and more ways to set up the game (instead of fixed setup in the base game). And this makes it even better.

Mr. Jack =

My favorite game with minimum luck factor that plays in under 1 hour. But good luck getting a copy. It is pretty hard to get your hands on one. Let alone with the expansion.

This game is very very fast for it's depth. The thing I don't like about it too much is the blind feeling of the game. You don't know what people are trying to invent. I guess if you play with a steady group of people then you can have a metagame going.

I don't think the game really belongs on this geeklist, as it takes at least 90 minutes, but it is a great game that takes concepts from games like Princes of Florence, Louis XIV, Caylus, etc. and welds them into a very elegant package, where by elegant I mean the game has very little chrome but feels meaty as hell...

I think this has passed under the radar (it is top 100, but I think based on quality that it deserves a spot in the top 20) for two reasons: one is that people hear that it is derivative of other games and thus never even try it; secondly, it requires thinking ahead and is too punishing of mistakes for some people, but the high level of interaction and the semi-random order that inventions come up in make it too "chaotic" for others... for me it's just right, a game that really rewards planning ahead but has variability due to the multi-player interactions...
