Let's play Zendo with BGG images.

Add a game and I will tell you if it has the BUDDHA NATURE!

Or, more specifically, if the image that you chose for that game has the buddha nature. This is a clue that the buddha nature has nothing to do with mechanics, etc... but just applies to the physical components.

Sorry - there is no prize for figuring out the "rule". This is just for fun.

I'll start with an image that follows the rule, and you folks can take it from there. I'll try to check back often to judge the new images.

I just want to be clear that the rule applies to an image, not a game. If the rule is "game uses pawns" and you add chess but the photo doesn't show the pawns, then it does not have the buddha nature!

*----EDIT----*
If you'd like to guess the rule, make your guess as a comment on the image that you posted.

The master of each round is encouraged to give a small GG reward to the student who guesses the rule first.

The "winner" of a round becomes the new master and should think of a new rule and post another image to get the whole game rolling again.

Current round (as of the time of this edit) starts here.

The BGG Image Zendo Player microbadge has been approved! You can purchase it here.

None of these are Buddha, actually. They are all images of Budai (Hotei in Japan), one of the seven immortals. He often symbolizes good fortune and luck, is always depicted as smiling and is often surrounded by children since he is known as the protector of children.

Some Buddhist sects do claim him as a Bodhisattva, but his origins are more from Taoism and folklore.

The most important distinguishing factor is that Buddha wouldn't be depicted as smiling. Buddhist teachings say there is nothing in the world to smile about if suffering and pain are allowed to exist. It's unfortunate that most trinket dealers in the world simply label Budai as the smiling or laughing Buddha. There is a lot more to him than that.

On you point, this is interesting:

Might explain why the Dalai Lama is smiling all the time.

This is not the rule.

Master, this humble student asks for a counter-example. This student is used to them.

This image has multiple playing pieces that are different shapes.

It does not have the buddha nature.

There's an eagle on the money.

There's also an eagle on the lower right corner of the box that might be a little easier to spot than the one on the cash.

You have to own the fricking game to see any eagle on the money in that picture, much less on the box (other than if it says "Eagle Games" somewhere, but that's not a picture of an eagle). I'll join the other Dave in commenting that this seems too sneaky.

How about this rule: "An image has the buddha nature if (and only if) it shows a game of Zendo being played."

I don't think that's right -- I'm just hoping it generates a counterexample from yon Master!

Is this image imbued of the Buddha nature, oh most wise and patient master?

If so, my suggestion of rule would be:

Spoiler (mouseover to reveal):
Game being played on a cloth surface.

This image also does not have the Buddha nature.

I apologize that the Buddha nature is being so elusive. Also, I apologize that my computer was not working this morning and I couldn't reply until now.

It would be more helpful if you provided more positive examples when folks guess rules. For example, for item #20 below, instead of showing an example of a Zendo game being played that did not follow the rule, show an example that follows the rule but does not show Zendo being played.

Now, we just need some rule guesses!

RULE
1. To be very specific - the image had to contain a
non-human animal of this planet.
2. Image contains glass beads of at least two
different colors.
3. An image has the Buddha nature if it shows the game
name, and the name contains the letter "R".
4. You have correctly found the rule that an image has
the Buddha nature if it contains a beverage/beverage
container/tankard of ale/etc.
5. Image contains numberless/pipless dice.
6. Shows an object/person in motion.
7. It was "no even numbers" not "no even digits."
8. "Game has to be clearly identifiable as a
non-english edition!"
9. An image contains Buddha if it contains components
arrayed in or displaying a fan pattern.
10. Single component touches all four edges of the
photo, but doesn't take up the full frame.
11. It has pieces which cover the intersection of
two lines.
12. Game on a wooden table

of one tile match elements of an adjacent tile
at the intersection of those two tiles.

but "Power Grid: France/Italy" has Buddha nature
(Ra). Likewise a game that is considered another
version of the same game is excluded (Formula
