6/8/07: Update -- The votes are in, and For Sale has won by a nose. The three games (in order) are For Sale, Coloretto, and Lost Cities. My purchase will likely go in tonight and with luck I will get the opportunity to air these three games out in public in the next few weeks. I have created a new Geeklist that will list the winners and how things went with their giveaways.

    Thanks again!

             Sag.

6/3/07: Update -- It had been my intention to look at closing this off tonight or tomorrow, but votes are still coming in, and now it's a bit of a horse race for first place between Coloretto and For Sale. Note that I will be buying the top three, so although these two appear to be finishing in the money there's still a spot open, and regardless of which is third, it will be fun to see which game claims first prize.

Thank you all for spending the time to help me decide, and I will leave the voting open for another few days. I had not expected anything close to this much response and it makes me feel very welcome on the site.

My intention is to take a final count sometime this coming week, inform everyone what the three selected games are (in the heading of this geeklist), purchase the games, and then find some chumps that are willing to go out into the world with me and show off the games to the unsuspecting public. After that I will create a new list where I will describe the results, be they positive or negative. I have this secret hope that others will consider picking up just one of the other games that got big votes and pulling the same trick, but it is likely that I am the only one here stupid enough to spend his money on games for complete strangers.

Thanks again for all the interest and positive feedback.

             Sag.

Original Posting:
I was flying this past week, and found myself sitting next to a seven-year-old kid with nothing to do for a four hour flight. Apparently his Mom didn't consider bringing him a book, or a game, or a magazine, or anything.

I remembered that I had three packs of Rocketmen: Axis of Evil in my laptop bag, so I pulled one out and let him have it. Not only was HE happier, but I was happier as well as it settled him down into his seat for the next two hours. At the end of the flight I tossed the two other packs on him and told his Ma not to worry about the cost when she offered to pay. I said the total cost was $10 (a white lie -- more like 12) and that I could expense it to my company. Both she and her son were very happy.

Then I got to thinking. What are the best games to drop on someone on a moment's notice for no reason or occasion? What are the games that you hand to someone and say "keep it" when they show interest in what you're playing in a public place? What are the games that you should have a copy of for when you want to do more than just say "thank you" for a favor?

I've made a short list and include it here. But I'm looking for more recommendations from you. Here's my criteria:

1. Small and portable. Something you can keep in your car is nice, but something you can have in your desk drawer or even a purse or laptop bag is even better.

2. Simple enough for a newbie to not be intimidated by the rules or play.

3. Visually appealing. It needs to be something that will catch their interest and bring a smile.

4. A bit exotic. Something that will be unique and catch them off guard. Since this will generally be for a non-gamer, the bar for exotic will be pretty low, but it's worth keeping in mind.

5. Inexpensive. I want to be able to do this without breaking the bank -- about the cost of a lunch, which is how I usually say thanks. And if it costs too much they'll feel guilty taking it. Let's say about $15 or less. I want it to be cheap enough that they don't feel obligated to pay, or to return the favor with a gift in return.

So here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to publish this list, invite all readers to add any games they think fit the bill, and ask for everyone to thumb-up any that they think are the best choices. Once the list settles down I'm going to buy the top three vote getters and go out into the world and surprise three different new-to-games people with them.

Help me out people -- I'll foot the bill (less than $50 total) if you'll give me the recommendations. And when this is all done I'll post the final results of what I purchased, who I sprang it on, and what their reaction was. Anyone who wants to get in on the gifting action is free to send me their stories as well.

People are fascinated by Cribbage, and are generally surprised that anyone would be willing to teach them. When you've taught them, they feel like they've been clued in on some great mystery. There are some pretty tiny boards out there. KB Toys usually has one in a can that comes with cards and is portable (but is one of the larger portable ones out there). Usually that one is about $6.00. I actually bought that board not long ago with the intent to teach some friends of mine and leave them with the board. They loved it.

How cool is this little game. Very cute and actually has good gameplay. A child of 6 could play, but enough strategy to keep an adult amused

Can't believe no one's mentioned this game yet. Great gateway game that is highly portable (comes in a small box), cheap (less than $12 in all major game stores), easy to learn (teachable in 5 mins) and is deeply strategic for up to 10 players. I call this a pseudo-party game in my book, great as a gift to get people into this hobby of ours.

My favorite speedy two-player game. Easy to pick-up; tons of depth. (An office buddy of mine have an intense rivalry going on with this game; we're still seeing unexpected and intelligent moves after about 15 plays.)

I have pretty good luck getting people into this. Usually you can sell people on the "Odin's Pet Ravens" part, and the gameplay clicks 5 minutes later.

Portable? You bet.
Simple? Tic-tac-toe on steroids. Though I have to admit I lose to the AI.
Aesthetic? I think it's very beautiful in a minimalistic and elegant way. Kind of like Chinese calligraphy.
Exotic? The artwork and gameplay, though very simple and abstract, matches the theme quite well.
Price? Now I don't know about that.

This game easily fits in your pocket and is a free download for you to print and play. I keep a copy in my laptop bag, backpack and car. Whenever my kids go on camps or sleep overs I always stick a copy in their bags. Can be learned in under a minute and game play lasts about 5 minutes for up to 4 players. It also fits neatly on a airplane food tray. I have lost count of the amount of times I have given this little gem away.

I own both sets for this game, but haven't had a chance to play it. It's about as portable as you can get. You don't even need a table to play it on.
The rules don't look too difficult, but you do need to keep them handy until you learn what the different coins do.

Dots has several good properties: simultaneous game play (no boring waiting), easy rules (1 sentence, see blow), small (card game), requires no big table, unusual graphics, cheap (7EUROS = 9.5US$).

I honestly keep a pack of Adlung card games for give away (I have nothing to do with that company or any other games company), since as card games they are cheap and small to store. At games fairs they often offer discounts if you buy a pack of their games, which are all card games at the same price. So depending on age, I pick one of the range in my cupboard and give it away. Games range from pretty complex like "Verräter" (GameId 72) to very simple like "Dots": Everyone turns over a card showing 3D objects and all players race to announce the correct number of spheres shown on all. That's it.

Apart from card games, TransAmerica should not be missing here, albeit somewhat out of scope since it is a little bit expensive (at 20$): From all my games I usually pick TransAmerica to introduce new people to boardgaming. Thus far, it always worked and gets people excited. I don't know why, but I never found people who did not like it. Therefore I often give it (or its brother TransEurope) away as a small gift (e.g. a little thank-you, birthday gift for not-very-close friend, etc.).

The box is quite small, the rules are pretty simple. A racing game of some sorts.

The cost may be prohibitive if you're buying new copies but it is, most definitely, available used. The concept it simple to learn but a challenge to master. Games are relatively short and are, for a clever player, a learning experience every time. It is, also, an excellent introduction to abstract "pure" strategy games.
