Ahh, Spring! Love is in the air! Well, Spring might only last another week (for those of us in the northern hemisphere), but the Love will continue! It's not like we can even tell from under the fluorescent lamps, but their cold, blue light can not chill the fire within our hearts. Or our sappiness.

Some of us GeekChatters got to telling the stories of the first date we had with our significant others. (This, of course, followed the logical progression of a conversation that started with games, then game abbreviations, and then sushi.) Chris (Driver 8) suggested we make a GeekList out of it, illustrated with whatever games might fit the story. Per his request, I'll start it off.

Please add your own tale of blossoming GeekLove. It need not actually involve playing games; nor need your sweetheart be a gamer or a Geek. Just pick a game that somehow fits the event. Happy endings are best, but catastrophic failures might also help caution those of us still looking for our One True Partner/Opponent.

For added inspiration, please enjoy this GeekList's official song and music video! (The "Watch This Movie" button is on the right, under the menu bar.)

My first date with Karis (parisska) was rather informal. I had met her at a friend's get-together a week earlier. (There's a whole other legend about that, but we'll stick with the first date.) She agreed to meet me for a game of
(The real game; not cards.) We had a great time. What we lacked in skill, we more than made up for in yells and laughs.

Thinking that things were going well, I asked if I could treat her to an
cone. She agreed, and we headed off to a local shop. As I perused the flavors, I found one I wanted. It was loaded with different chocolate candies, but had the ominous title of Heaps of Love. I really didn't want her to think I was suggesting anything. We'd barely met. But I also decided that I was going to be myself regardless of how it turned out, and that included getting the flavor I wanted.

Do girls read into something as innocuous as an ice cream flavor? You bet they do! Thankfully, she thought I had made a good choice. Little did we know then, but I had, in fact, made the best choice. =)

First date with an old friend. We decided to go to Red Lobster and splurge on two huge seafood sampler platters--lobster, shrimp, crab and other stuff.

I was staying at her place at the time and we went back there. Just about the time we got back I got violently ill. It turns out I'm very allergic to shrimp. gulp I was throwing up for three days. Well, she took care of me for the three days.

We had a short but interesting relationship and then lost touch with each other. The shrimp allergy stayed with me though. Sort of wish it was the other way around...

My girlfriend and I met at the library where I work. She used to come in every Wednesday and brouse around. I struck up a conversation with her a couple times but I was too nervous to ask her out. As time went on, she'd linger longer and longer at the library apparently waiting for me to make the move. Finally, after she practically put the words in my mouth, I asked her out for coffee.

We went to Dunkin Donuts and talked and talked about all the things we have in common. (Then again, doesn't every couple do this on their first date?) After we left the coffee shop, I drove her home and we talked some more in the car. She suggested we listen to some music and noticed an early 80s REM tape I had in my cassette deck. She was the first girl I met who actually knew their music from that era. We listened to them for a while and she knew the names of all the songs. That had been my 'growing up music' and she was the first person I could share that connection with.

Since then we've been able to share our other interests. She's a musician, I'm a boardgamer. She wants to teach me the guitar, I want to teach her games. I hope I win.

My wife and I have been married now for four years and we started dating Oct. 29,1999... and we have known each other since 6th grade or so... so its been a really long time, but let me see if I can go back to that day.

If I remember correctly it was a Sunday and Becky (my wife) and I went to breakfast at a local Friendly's... great breakfast there by the way. We talked for an hour or so... and then walked on the boardwalk for a few hours. Nothing too exciting, although, we did not hold hands while walking... and the first kiss came at the next date.

It was a rather enjoyable date. Four years later we got married.

I was in the choir when she graduated... no comments about the attire, please...

Not really our first date, but I met Lisa when a mutual friend invited us both over for a game of Space Marine.

We both wanted to play Eldar and for some reason we couldn't think of a better way of doing so than to share and make decisions together for one force.

Ah, downtime in between guiding our Exarchs in destroying our enemies; can you imagine a more romantic setting?

I have her to thank for getting us hooked on Magic: The Gathering, insisting that we try Settlers, finding BGG, having a house with multiple gaming rooms, and thinking it would be a good idea to spend a few hundred dollars to fly to another state just to meet our fellow BGGers at a Con. Combining our CCG sets came some time after moving in together and sharing our finances.

Of course, now I hardly ever win a game against her. Seems fair - I figure I used up all the luck a guy could ever want winding up with her.

October 3rd, 2003.

Ayumi and my first date started out with me taking her to the Waterfront Pasta House here in Missoula. We ate out on the deck that overlooked the Clark Fork River. She had the penne, I don't remember what I had....

Then I took her to the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie. All firsts dates should include some sort of Pirates!!

After that we went to Sean Kelley's, the local Irish pub and had some drinks (the Rum part).

And now, as of this month we have started to plan our wedding. Ahh mush stuff...

You all, of course are invited to crash it if you want....

Since I'm as solo as a person can be and am pretty much guaranteed to stay that way, I will go with "The First Date" quite literally, and describe the first date I ever had.

It was sometime in the mid 1960s - I don't remember exactly which year, but probably 1965 or '66 - and I took a lovely young lady to the Michigan State Fair. It was the first time my parents let me take the car unsupervised, and I'm sure they were a pair of nervous wrecks.

We did a lot of state fair type of stuff in the afternoon, but in the evening we heard the following music groups, live:

The Supremes
The Temptations
Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.

Ah, Motown in the '60s!

Because we couldn't tear ourselves away from the music, we missed our promised return time, and were both grounded. By the time I was able to see her again, she was dating someone else already - her grounded time wasn't as long as mine ... ah well, c'est la vie.

Not a particularly captivating story, but Mathgirl had a personal ad on match.com that I answered in the spring of '01. We e-mailed a few times, were going to talk on the phone but never quite got around to it. First date was dinner at Macaroni Grill, followed by Star Trek Episode 1 on DVD at her place.

December '02, we took a cruise with my family to Mexico. We spent Wednesday in Tulum (I could have sworn there was a game called Tulum with the temple on the box cover
but I can't find it) and proposed that night.

Married in October '03.

I met my wife during an improv show, April 1990. She was in the audience, I was on stage. I found that making eye contact with girls during a show was a good way to meet women. It worked! My wife came up afterward and asked if she knew me (to this day she insists she wasn't hitting on me). After a while (coward shake ) I finally gave her my number and told her to call me. I guess she got tired of all the waiting, because when she finally called she asked me out to a Michelle Shocked concert. It was a very nice evening, I'd planned on buying dinner, but we were late so it ended up to be Carl's Jr.

We married 4 years later, and now have three kids. She's awesome, as are the kids.

Ah, that first date with my wife.

We met at the Gathering in 1999 over a game of Charades, but didn't strike up a romance that year. It was the following year when I figured I should make a move (I'm about as debonaire as Leisure Suit Larry). Luckily, there was a sign-up sheet for some people to go out to dinner at a fondu restaurant (The Melting Pot). So, I asked Rachel if she'd like to go and she agreed. So we signed up.

However, at the time of the arranged outing, her gaming group was still trying to finish up their game. At least that's how I remember it. I waited as long as possible, but the group I was with was ready to go, so we agreed to meet at the restaurant. Alas, she wound up a few tables over (it was a big group), so we didn't even get to talk or sit near one another on that first date.

We've been married six years now.

Before I talk about the first date, I need to give some background information. I first met Dave (ripkil) at a computer lab on campus. I was being tutored by a friend of his in Java and he had come to visit that friend. I remember being asked a question I did not know the answer to, and Dave telling me that the answer was "modulus". We chatted on the computer, and our first date was at my dorm, watching the movie, Antitrust. We talked and talked instead of watching the movie.

We're getting married later this year

My first date with Michelle (Twinkles) was a blind date. I was in the Air force, in upstate New York. My supervisor decided to set me up with a girl he knew. Well, I knew it was a blind date. She thought she was babysitting. Anyway, his house is on a lake, so we go swimming. (it's July)

I ask her when she graduated, and she said "last month" I freak out. "how old are you?", I ask. "18" (I'm 25!)

Later, we go out dancing - I've never danced in my life, I have no rythym, and 2 left feet, both size 13. She doesn't dance, either. It wasn't pretty. We decide to leave early.

As we're headed home, I take a wrong turn. I'm trying to find my way, not paying attention to other important things, like how fast I'm going. I get pulled over, and issued a speeding ticket. (50 in a 30 zone)

What a night. I thought I'd never see her again.

We've been married for 16 years.

But we remained only friends for two years, after which I lived elsewhere and so was forgotten. We dated others. But then we met again in '98. Our first real date was at a friend's wedding. We both drank too much, and feeling no pain, took a taxi ride together, going the same way. Now married for six years, we have two little ones, and life is chaotic.

Bianca (borchardbianca) and I first met at one of my old band's shows. We were playing this little pub called Durkin's. During one of our breaks, she and her friends came up to chat with my friend Dave and I. As soon as she said hello, and I heard her English accent I was hooked. She was beautiful as well, but the accent really put it over the top. She gave me her number and told me to call.

So I did, and I had to bother her for 2 months before she would go out on a date with me. Of course, right before our first date, I got my hair cut. The woman made me look way to military, so I was already nervous. We agreed to meet at TGI Fridays. Of course, there are 2 of them, relatively close to each other by us, and we were waiting at different ones! She eventually came to me, and our date started. It was probably one of the worst dates I've ever been on. I could tell she wasn't really into me. Later we played pool, and when we were leaving, she just walked away and said "Thanks, bye!" and got in her car. Not even a hug...ouch!!

Luckily for us, I'm not smart enough to know when to quit. I continued to call her on occassion and I was able to convince her to come to my buddy's house for a small party one night. Thats where the magic really started. Not long after that, we began talking on the phone every night for hours. Eventually, I worked up the courage to ask her to be my girlfriend and now here we are. We've just moved into our own place after spending some time living with her family. She's watched me become a huge geek and has even joined in the de-evolution. She has become quite the gamer herself and will be accompanying me to our first ever game group tonight.

Just remember....chicks dig guys with guitars.

My wife and I were friends long before we started dating. This is the first account of anything that could be referred to as a "date." My first date with my wife also started with a tennis match (like GaryP's). She was on the varsity team and I.... had never played tennis in my life. It only made sense that I would go and watch her win her match against some other team. Besides, she and I had been discussing her games and she commented that no one really came. My brother was lending me his convertible for the year for pretty much this exact purpose (he seemed to think that I needed to get laid more than I did). So, my freshly washed and waxed convertible and I rolled into the park where the two teams were playing to find myself the only spectator of two girls teams playing tennis. To be frank, I thought that I had died and gone to heaven! The girls were about as flirty as possible. A number of girls asked me if I was Kristen's boyfriend and I, quite frankly said, "No, but I'd like to be." After the match we hung out and chatted for a while and then went to Que Tal, where I bought dinner with nothing but change!blush We didn't actually start dating, officially, for about another year when she broke-up with her boyfriend. Fortunately, I used calculus as a way to constantly hang out with her. As a result, my calculus grades were excellent.

My girlfriend and I met through the regular, horribly clichéd, mutual friend scenario: we both had the same friend, who seemed to take it upon herself to 'hook us up (we had actually gone to school together since kindergarten, but had never really known each other beyond casual acquaintances). Anyway, after we got to talking for a while, we discovered we both had a deep mutual appreciation for all things Tim Burton (no, we were not those fashionable 'goth' kids you see everywhere nowadays, we just like Tim Burton).
Somehow we got into a game of tossing M&Ms at eachother so we could catch them with our mouths in mid air (don't ask me), and after hitting her directly in the eye with several sugar coated candies, she, for some reason wanted to go on another date. The rest they say is history.

Well me and my gf rekindled through myspace.com(though we went to all the same schools throughout our life and were in band together). Well we started online dating and school ended so it was time to come home and see her. This was all going to turn into an experience I would never forget.

Well I came to the door and she just had an operation(gall bladder removed I believe), and was really weak from the operation. I stayed at her house and took care of her the whole day and the next and the next...for about a week. We talked a lot and played many board games and such, so even though she could barely walk we had a great time, and just grew closer to each other.

Two years so far and still going strong. Need more games though!

Met my wife through mutual friends. My friend and his wife was graduating from grad school and would be moving overseas. I wanted to see my friend possibly for the last time before he left the States. Prior to the visit, he had told me that he wanted to introduce me to a medical student who was a friend of his wife's.

A couple of days into the visit, they introduce me to their doctor friend. The four of us go out to a movie. She is carded due to her being short and looking underage. We had a good laugh and she took it in stride. Dinner conversation was mostly in the realm of the state of medicine. We shared similiar field and had a lively chat but neither of us were interested beyond friendship.

Ahhh woman. They don't know when to quit. My friend's wife was very disappointed that she didn't make a match. I told her my reason for the visit was to spend time with them (really my friend but you can't do something with one without the other). Also, it felt nice to pretend to be a student again at least for a week.

A couple days later, we are going out for dinner as usual only this time they tell me that they are picking up a friend who will be joining us for dinner. I felt an ambush coming but I wasn't sure if it was a guy or gal that would be joining us so I held back. It was a woman who was another friend of the wife. That day was a blur mostly because I was brooding. I remember her trying to strike up a conversation with me due to everyone being so quiet but not sure if it was during the ride to the restaurant or on the way back. My recollection is that the wife kept on urging me to join in the conversation at the restaurant and I just lost it. I angrily told her that I had nothing to say and to soften it a bit I just said I was also getting tired.

Back at her friend's dormitory, I get introduced to my friend's friend. I get lost in all that anime video collection of his. Meanwhile, the wife seeing that my concentration is elsewhere pulls me aside and starts to badger me about at least asking her friend for her number. I oblige and ask her friend for her phone number knowing that I would be refused. She looks me over and after a pause, instead writes her email address. Gotta love technology.

yea,yea, I'm getting there! Anyway...

Initially out of guilt (for my rude behavior), I decide to send her email of an apology with an explaination of my behavior that night. The emails soon became almost daily. I'm soon drawn to her personality and her me. Wanted to see if there was more, I invite her to visit me...

We got married this past September.

I met my wife in an Electrical Engineering (EE) class. I was computer Science, and part of our curriculum was to take a basic State Machines EE course. Mostly AND and OR gates with some MUXes and shift registers thrown in. She was a EE student. We also were in the same church, but had never really met.

Being in the same course, that was a good excuse to ask questions about the HW. One time when I was at her place discussing HW, she mentioned that their pilot light was out (it was the Fall, and starting to get cold.) While I was figuring out how to light it, her roommates were teasing her by mouthing the words to "Come on baby, light my fire!"

Our first date wasn't that exciting, Chili's and mini golf.

I figured that all the other EE students in the class were pretty ticked that some CS guy had come and snatched one of the 3 girls in the class.

My wife Stephanie and I had the typical "geek" romance (although I'm the geek, she isn't)--we met online via Yahoo! Personals.

Our first date was at Chili's Restaurant, in Dearborn/Detroit, Michigan, late one Sunday evening in September. I'd visited my cousin most of that day in Howell--which, some of you may know, is an hour away, roughly. Mother nature decided on a late summer storm that day, and boy was it a doozy. I remember driving back on I-96, getting off at Telegraph, taking that down to Ford Road, and all the while seeing tree limbs and branches in the roads, thinking "I'm gonna be late I'm gonna be late I'm gonna be late!"

As luck would have it, Steph called to tell me that she decided she wanted to shower first (she was originally going to come straight from work, at the hospital) and change...thus I was able to take my time.

I'll never forget when I saw her car pull in to the parking lot. She parked, and I went up to her car and knocked on her window. She jumped about 50 feet.

Dinner was nice, and we decided to go for a drive. We drove and drove for hours on that stormy, rainy night. We went past her parents' place in New Boston, drove past mine in Lincoln Park, went all over really. Finally we figured it'd be a good idea to move her car from Chili's, so she parked it at my place, and we kept driving.

Eventually we got back and I pulled out my telescope, as the storm had cleared things up nicely and the sky (at 2:30am!) was beautiful. Of course, not nearly as much as my date.

We had our first kiss that night, and have been together ever since (going on 7 years now). Our first anniversary is this year.

Oh...and she usually plays games with me.
