This list is intended to discuss possible new games for the gaming website http://www.yucata.de.

If you think YES - I WANT THIS GAME AT YUCATA.DE then give thumbs up to that entry.

Entries with many thumbs up may have better chances to be implemented

If you think you can help yucata.de, just tell me (send me an E-Mail). If you are a .NET-Developer or want to learn the technology you might realize a game of your own. We also have need for someone helping with the images/graphics.

Criteria for games at yucata.de
* No player interaction. Trading and actions are usually bad. Veto cards are usually bad, since after each action of each player, each other player needs to be asked if he wants to say 'veto'.
* Too many microactions/phases. This is no fun to play as PBW. At least not for most people.
* No memory effect: Remember who has taken what, and so on. This does not really work in PBW. This is why Stratego would not be a good option.
* Two-player games. The vast majority of games played at yucata.de are two-player-games. I will think a long time before adding a game which does not have a good 2-player version.

I prefer themed Eurogames. This does not mean that I will never add new abstract board games but they are not at the top of my list.
2010-04: I just removed most of the abstracts. There are better platforms for abstract games than yucata.de.
2010-05: I sorted again by number of thumbs. That's a manual and painful process. I also deleted games nobody wanted, games which could not be played with two players, games by Knizia.
2010-09: I sorted again and deleted a few games nobody wanted.
2011-10: I removed a heap of games which don't have any real chance to make it to Yucata. I should delete at least 50 more, but many of the proposed games I still don't know...

The list is becoming pretty long and BGG is missing a sort feature. User Grimwold created a small script to help us out.
Sorted by thumbs: http://www.grimwold.org.uk/bgg/yucatalist.php?sort=thumbs
Sorted by name : http://www.grimwold.org.uk/bgg/yucatalist.php?sort=alpha

Games which won't make it to yucata.de
--------------------------------------------------
Games which didn't convince me enough to bring them online or are too much work or just fell out of consideration for some reason
Alcazar, Auf Achse, Babel, Byzanz, Charon Inc., Crows, Dungeon Lords, Fjords, Grand Cru, i9n, King of Tokyo, Kontor, Maharaja, McMulti, Mount Drago, Odin's Ravens, Pantheon, Portobello Market, Nightfall, Sumeria, The Golden City, Titania, Toledo, Troyes, Venedig, Wasabi

Games which are not suitable enough for PBW play
Antike, Innovation, Quarriors

Games where we couldn't get permissions
Ascension, Atlantis, Caylus, Goa, Hive, Jaipur, Ninja vs. Ninja, Space Station, Terra Nova, The City, Wilderness

Publishers not working with yucata.de
--------------------------------------------
Avalon Hill - See Hasbro
Days of Wonder - They are putting their games online themselves and are taking money for it. Little chances for a free implementation.
Fantasy Flight Games - Nearly impossible to get permissions
Filosofia - No permissions
Hasbro - Nearly impossible to get permissions.
Queen Games - They don't see internet as an opportunity
Ravensburger/alea - I removed most games, since it is nearly impossible to get permissions.
Knizia Games are also completely excluced, regardless of the publisher.
White Goblin Games - They told me that they are currently not interested in online versions of their games.
Z-Man - Now part of Filosofia: See above

I'd love to see RRT Railways of the World somewhere available for online play. Even if the game had to be re-named to keep MicroProse off your back. Railways of the World has no ties to MicroProse and so you'd only have to deal with Eagle Games.

Railways of the World is the same game as Railroad Tycoon, just renamed and republished with a few minor differences.

Railroad Tycoon is the same game, with like 3 minor tweaks. RRT's rules are here.

There's an auction phase to be start player for each round. (a round is 3 turns, for those who haven't played.)

I think you could either...

1) rotate the start player around the table. So at the times a new action card is dealt up there's a different person who's getting the first shot at it.

FWIW, that's the house rule we play with. Greatly speeds up play, without changing much gameplaywise.

thumbs up, but I would strongly object to the auction being tampered with. Some of the cards are way powerful and removing the auction would just reduce the game to random luck of who is on turn when the good cards come up.

In my free time I'm working on implementing this. I only have a rough 1 player implementation but almost all of the placement rules have been implemented: http://dan.bravender.us/~dbravender/taluva/index.html

Bad news is that I just started a new job and I'm going to have a lot less time to work on this. Good news is that the only work I've done is on the client side so it might be usable if someone else does the server.

I'll try to get it done when I have time. My plan is to write the server in Javascript and run it on Node.js so I can reuse the client code for placement rules on the server.

Cheers,

Dan

I really like the game, but that is not true... The VP-tiles in the church are not good evenly distributed in the 2-player game... But you can fix it by using another composition.

Really? I play it more 2 player than anything else. The fact that you don't have even number of VP tiles is not a big dea, IMHO

I don't know if I could express, why the game scales not that good for 2 players.

I meant, that 2 player most of the time get the same number of church tiles. Ant there is one spare... (I think there are 3 "tens") The player that gets the spare one, most of the times win.

Another problem is the preparation round. If one player makes a mistake here, the game is over before it even started.

I think it is a very good game, but it's not good edited.

I was coming to add this game to the list. It is perfect for asynch play.

Turns are lengthy, and there can be some serious downtime between turns. I can't stand playing it live, but if I could play it asynch it would be wonderful.

Possible issue: Somebody runs out of countries, gets to invest every invest phase. That could bog the game down. I don't think it is a problem since many turns can past without investment phases, but it is the only fly in the ointment that I can think of.

I'm not sure I would say NO interrupts. While Imperial is a great game, there are plenty of interrupts when moving boats/armies to a section where there are other player's boats/armies exist and you want to not attack. Say you're moving 5 boats into a sea which has another player's boat in it but his interests are aligned with yours, but you each move once a day not at the same time. It takes five days to resolve five times that he really doesn't want to kill one of your boats.

The second issue I have with Imperial is there are those who think it should be played like Diplomacy (with lots of agreements and double-crossing) and those who think there should be no discussion. Clearly discussion is hard to stop when there is a site where players might move daily, but there are those who just hate the 'Diplomacy' aspect possibility.

I would love to see Terra Prime implemented on Yucata.de - I think it would be a good implementation in PBW format because you don't need to check with opponents for anything during your turn. The turns are sort of like micro-turns, but I think there's enough to do on your turn (or enough to think about much of the time) that it wouldn't be too annoying in PBW format.

Terra Prime is generally for 3-5 players, but there is an official 2 player variant in the rules - everything is the same except for setup - smaller board, only 1 of each Tech Upgrade is available, and a couple Reward tiles are removed at random.

I'm obviously biased since I made the game, but I think Terra Prime is a great game with a great theme, and I think part of the reason it's not as popular as it could be is because it hasn't gotten a lot of visibility. Maybe with an online implementation more people would get a chance to play this great game!

Wow. 18 votes in less than a day. That's pretty good for this list and will make sure that we'll have a closer look at the game

Well, I still didn't play the game. I looked a few days ago for availability but didn't find it in my favorite online stores.

But even if I play it and I am completely overwhelmed: What I really need is a developer saying "Yes, I'll do it". So if someone is volunteering here, we can talk about it

Well, it won't be available in any store anymore - all copies have been sold or used as replacement parts :/

I have a copy at home though. Maybe I could send it to the developer who volunteers to code it up?

Another suggestion but I am not sure if it is too complex to be implemented.

At least the game variant for beginners would not be too complex.

I'd suggest playing the implementation at http://www.boardgaming-online.com/ before deciding whether to implement at Yucata. That version may not be visually appealing to some, but it works remarkably well. It has a relatively huge following with a consistent 1000+ active games. The only advantages I see with a Yucata implementation is (i) that there is potential for a better looking interface, and (ii) that it is integrated into the Yucata community/system. Honestly, I'm not sure that is enough to warrant the expenditure.

One strong reason for a Yucata implementation is it's not clear to me that www.boardgaming-online.com has secured permission from the publisher/designer. I keep thinking the site will receive a cease and desist and my online TtA gaming will be over.

Today, that's true. But the main reason for that is, that those games are easy to implement. If we had TtA online I would finally have a chance to play it. On the table, it just takes too long.

OK you convinced me... I'M ONBOARD for some T&A.

Maybe some joining of forces is in order?

Just a note, the implementation on boardgaming-online is very smooth, and the lighter graphics makes it very easy to play from a mobile device...

Would be fun to have multiple tracks too.. like maps for hacienda.

Absolutely love Snow Tails, and really really really disliked Savannah Tails. It over simplified the parts of the game that made Snow Tails so strategic. The visualization of lanes is tricky in Snow Tails sometimes - I'll give you that - but the trade off wasn't worth it to me.

Honestly Brass isn't all that difficult.

my wife plays it and enjoys it, can beat me too. and she is not what i would call a gamer. she normally only enjoys cards games, enjoys railways of the world. but her strategy normally revolves around her taking actions/picking cards based on herfavourite colours and the like.

Everyone i've taught the game to gets it after just one game.

I taught myself the game, using several of the videos on bgg here and using an episode of the how to teach podcast. and i've never had a problem. i can see perhaps playing for the first time from the rules only being tougher.

-------------------

That being said i'd like to see a copy of AOI online just so i can play it. several things doesn't sit well with me, but if i could play it, i'd probably buy it.

The actual auction process is for artifact cards. I know that is somewhat of a concern. But the process is actually very short, in fact more often than not 1 round only and at that usually it would be only one person that could actually bid. So it is nothing that would take any more time than any other games you have on the site. As for my opinion on the game: I have played probably 100 euro games, this is #1 on my list of euro games. Please consider this one seriously. It is a marvelous and ingenious game with plenty of strategy and different ways to win. A very flexible game on top of that.

Ok, because of your recommendation I went and got the game.
I must say that I like it. One of the rare games which really seem to work for 2-6 players (but I played it only with 2).

There are an auction and some other micro-actions like handing back an activated gem. It could still be ok for online play.

Playing it in real life, it was a bit of a nuisance to calculate the points and energy the whole time. That would be far better online

Well, I would agree to have it at yucata.de but with two conditions:
a) There must be a volunteer to develop it
b) The publisher must agree

Excellent tile laying game, very different from Carcassonne. Might be tricky to workout the triangle tiles with different borders. At least here, it wouldn't be illegal to place a tile in any particular orientation, it would just create different rule implications.

likely will not see a reprint from what I have read around on BGG but I feel its one of those hidden gems because its always been a fun, dynamic play (with a dose of random because players can really cause havoc!)..maybe easy to get permission?

Gheos is interesting with 2, 3 or 4 players. The drawing of EPOCH tiles adds a random (timing) element but so does rolling dice in other implements like stone age but I don't see this as a deal-breaker in gameplay. Most importantly, this game has a fairly high replay value due to the tile drawing for hands and the variety in which you can choose to migrate, cause conflict, or peacefully build.

Especially with its OOP status, it seems like it would be a good offering.

This plays good with 2 and it allows up to 4 players to play. Nice game, would probably fit well at yucata.

There is also three other titles: Africa, Asia, and Europe (and now Americas). They are all played the same, but with some transportation differences. They are addictive, quick games (about 30 minutes when played live) and has been enjoyed by everyone, of all ages, I have introduced it to. You can even learn some geography while playing.

10 Days in Africa is available to play at http://www.gametableonline.com, but it's Java real-time only, and you've got to wait around for players. I much prefer turn-based board game implementations, and you can play them more or less in real-time as well if you set up a time with whoever you're playing to be online and keep on top of moves... but at least you're not locked into that.

Not a good choice, I think. Too much out-of-turn action with the booting of other players cubes.

Hi Kay,

to be frank the 2-player version is the weakest. But the game itself is very strong! The thing about it is, that your own style of playing depends very much on what the other players are doing. Very interactive! And that's why it is not so strong with 2 players. My opinion. But I still like it with 2!!!

This would be an excellent game for Yucata, because it's best with 5. Some games are excellent, but hardly ever played because it's difficult to find players. That's why Yucata would save it for some people.

So,
finally I bought the game and I also played it. I was a bit in doubt if it would be suitable but I think it would.
All your turns are very quick. But there are not too many per game.

In normal playing each player places 3 + 4 + 5 + 5 meeple during the game = 17 meeple placements. For about 2/3 of the meeples you need an extra action for removing them again. So, about 30 turns per players.

Conflicts can be auto-resolved.
It also plays well with two.

I just thumbed it

After reading this list more times than I care to mention, this still stands out as a great choice to add. It would implement great and could really be played in, comparatively, a short number of turns.

A fun game that handles 2-4 players. There are some "out of turn" actions required when protecting against pirate raids, but I don't think that would bog down the game at all. This would be a good addition for Yucata in my opinion.

Just wanted to say, yucata is probably my favorite site, especially since the addition of carcassone hunters and gatherer's. I especially like that it keeps stats of games i play, and my records against opponents in each of the games. Thanks for all the hard work you put into the site, it's great.
