What follows is a list of games on my "must buy" list. These are games that appeal to me in some way; either theme, topic or a combination of both. I'm a game collector, so I'll buy just about anything. But these games are special. I'm looking forward to these games with great anticipation and not a little impatience.

I plan on using this list to track my "must buy" games for 2007 and I'll be updating to add new games "I gotta have" as I become aware of them and marking games acquired as I come into possession of them. Comments are welcome, but due to the nature of the list I'm not allowing public additions to the list.

Something of a cheat as I already have this game. But any list of "must buy" games has to included this game as I've been looking forward to this game since I first heard about the concept two (?) years ago.

Got It! (June 2007)

I have to admit that I was a little disappointed. Maybe no game could live up to the hype generated for this game by the concept and designers. It's a solid idea containing some good games with the potential of more to come (yet to be designed). Still, I'm less "wowed" than I was prepared to be. Not a bad game. Just not a great game. Yet.

I have this as a "must buy" too, but honestly, after hearing an interview with Mike Selinker my interest started dropping. The games sounded way too goofy.

Is that what disappointed you?

So far only one of the games strikes me as "goofy" and what else can one expect from a James Ernest game? No, my disappointment stems from the fact that games included in Stonehenge are somewhat bland. Maybe that's an unavoidable side-effect of the games design and concept. I haven't played all of the games included in Stonehenge yet but so far, none of the games I have played has "wowed" me to any degree. The games are all fine, just nothing "special" so far.

Still, with an expansion on the way and independent development occurring, the Stonehenge idea still holds promise and I'll continue to follow its progress.

This is certainly intriguing. I've had it on my radar for a while but need to suss it out now that it's been released.

I love games like San Juan and Glory to Rome where cards are used for multiple purposes. The pre-publication buzz for this game is very good and it sounds like a fantastic game. Sight unseen, this is a definite "must buy" for me.

Update: Got it! (11/20/2007)

This game lives up to its pre-publication hype! Great theme.

A game that has been in development for a few years and somehow slipped under my radar until just recently. Based on Avalon Hill's classic "War At Sea" system, this is another game where the topic/theme alone make this a "must buy" for me. The fact that the game is based on a proven system is just all the better. I hope to have this game in my hands soon.

Decision Games 2nd edition, 2007. More than a straight reprint; some changes have been made and the new version revises and expands the original edition. I'm looking forward to the "new and improved" version of this classic wargame.

Something a little different from the usual Z-Man games fare. This game has been getting a lot of positive buzz over the last year and my anticipation is reaching a breaking point! Sounds like a great game that will be loads of fun to play. Also sounds like it will be wargame enough to satisfy the Grognard in me but with game play that will also appeal to non-wargamers.

I need to look at this more. I had a hard time figuring out how the game would FEEL just by reading the rules. Lots of "goober" though.

Played this yesterday at Origins. Had a great time in the demo game with my son--so much fun we had to bring it home. Played it this morning and it was even better. My major realization upon playing it, as opposed to reading about it on the website, was that the units don't represent a single plane, but a squadron or larger group of planes. As such, you are never "shot down" but only lose victory points in conflict with other planes--representing losing planes from your squadron.

The game only takes a half hour to forty-five minutes to play. It is full of difficult and interesting choices. As the German player, managing fuel consumption is crucial. The British player has to use guile and deception to lure the German fighters out of position. The rules are really quite simple, but effectively deal with a lot of issues--fuel, weather, A-A, altitude. The physical production was outstanding--lots of beautiful bits and outstanding art. I discovered when I got it home that the back of the game board was covered with a gorgeous poster crammed with historical background! I don't know any other game with that kind of extra value on the back of the board.

This and the upcoming 1960 (according to Zev Shlasinger, coming at the end of August or early september), have catapulted Z-man to the top rank of publishers in my book. Feudo was also on display at their booth and looked gorgeous. I wish I'd had some more money--I would have taken Feudo and Triumvirate home, too. Zev did a fantastic job teaching Duel in the Dark and couldn't have been nicer to my son and I. Thanks, Zev!

This one caught my attention about 2 minutes into Origins on Thursday. I never had a chance to play it, but I must have watched about 5 demos of it...it's still very high on my list.

Very cool game! Simple rules and easy to learn but after only two missions, I can see the potential for a lot of variety while each player attempts to out think, outwit and out maneuver the other.

Played this for the first time last weekend at September's GASP Games Day. Great game. It really does set up and play quickly. The preprogrammed bombing run is a very cool element. The British must follow their planned route no matter what the Germans do. Brilliant.

Now to get my own copy.

Another game that I have just started hearing about. This is another game where the theme is enough to sell me all by itself. I usually don't like a lot of humor in my games (other than "inside joke" type stuff), but this games sounds like it will fast and easy to play and a lot of fun too.

The first thing you'll notice is that the rules are a part of the box. The front opens like a book and then a second "page" opens to reveal the cards (also packed nicely beneath folding pieces).

The actual game play is fast and easy. Each player gets a "power core" that forms the center of your machine. This is your mainline; play cards to the left and right from this point. Each card must be attached to a power source and more are mixed in the deck. Cards may also be played above and below cards on the main line -- these are plugs.

Then divide the cards evenly between each player -- this gives each player a "parts pile." Each player the draws 7 cards from his parts pile and the game starts.

The goal is to be the last player with cards in your parts pile. Once your parts pile runs out you are out of the game.

You build your machine by adding cards. The first card each turn is free but other cards have a cost; you must "scrap" a card from your hand for each one played after the first. Discarded cards -- the "scrap pile" -- can be raided by some of the machine components.

Once you've played cards you turn your machine on, following the steps on the cards. You work top to bottom, left to right through your machine. So the uppermost plug on your leftmost card would activate first, then down to the mainline card, then down to the bottommost plug. Then move to the right and repeat the sequence.

The placement of the cards in your machine is very important; the various combos you can discover are fun. (Such as cards that remove cards from an opponents hand and then a second card that, if your opponent has fewer cards than you, allows you to do something else to him). Placement is vital to winning.

Overall an excellent game. I look forward to whatever new game Privateer Press designs next.

Call me a heretic if you must but I like Fluxx. It's fast, fun and crazy. Sometimes that's just what I want in a game. Adding a Zombie theme to Fluxx sounds just crazy enough to work. I'll certainly be adding this game to my collection of Fluxx decks.

Update: Got it! (10/09/2007) The addition of "Creepers" and the Zombie theme make Zombie Fluxx the best Fluxx yet!

A solitaire wargame about flying B-29 bombing missions over Japan in 1944 and '45. Based on the classic B-17: Queen of the Skies published by Avalon Hill in 1983, this game incorporates game changes that focus on the B-29 Superfortress. Currently in "Pledge" status at Khyber Pass Games ( http://mysite.verizon.net/rjlein/khyberpass/id38.html), as of this writing the game still needs about fifty (50) more pre-orders before it is moved into the publication process. Come on B-17: Queen of the Skies players, you know you want this game! Pre-order now!

I can still remember reading my older brother's Marvel comics back in the early and mid 1960's. I was there for the beginning of the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, Spider Man and the Hulk. (Oh, don't I wish we saved those comic books!) It was great time to be a kid. The Heroscape system is a good game and merging it with the Marvel Super heroes is a brilliant idea! This game should be on store shelves "any day" now. Should be a lot of fun. (And I'm sure it's something my Grandson will enjoy too!)

Addition. Forgot about this game but this sounds like another great game. A card-driven game about the 1960 Presidential election. I was only four years old when this election took place, but I've seen the video clips; heard and read about the election all of my life so not only is there a historical factor, but a nostalgia factor as well. Early buzz is that this is going to be a fun game. I'm looking forward hitting the (1960) campaign trail later this year.
