Ok this is going to be a tricky geeklist and I can already hear the complaints rolling in so let me try to belay as many as I can with this introduction.

When one thinks of wargames one generally thinks of the classic hex and counter wargame. Maps representing terrain, unit counters and combat charts. However there is another type of wargame that doesn't get as much attention and that's the war themed card game.

This list came to my mind as I recently online ran into an old wargame buddy of mine from way back. We played the usual Avalon Hill wargames but we often played as well some card games as fillers for our game nights. Some of our fillers were games like Nuclear War, Naval War and alike. Good old fashion card games with a grognard twist.

Ok, now we need to define what I am talking about here. Just because a game uses cards doesn't mean it's a card game. Memoir '44 uses cards but it's definitely not a card game (battlecard driven is the description I like for games like Memoir '44). Paths of Glory uses cards and it's a card driven wargame but it's still not a card game in the way we are thinking here. The games I am talking about use the cards and the card play rather than any combat chits and alike. Some have maps but in general they aren't used for tactical game play as much as keeping score almost as in Condottiere which uses a board but is really a trick taking cardgame.

Let's hope that covers it although I still half expect someone to ask me why I don't think March Madness qualifies to be on the list.

Somehow, this isn't listed as a wargame. Since you are refighting 9 battles of the Hundred Years War, I'm not sure how this doesn't qualify. I mean, Condettiere is classified as a wargame.

I confess I've never played this game, but I have read the rules and it is nothing like the board game. Players play fleet cards face down in one of five oceans with the player with the highest strength in each ocean winning that battle. Of course, certain cards have special abilities. The player who wins the most battles wins the game.

Here's another game for your excellent list, Brian.

This one's on my horizon. My FLGS is hoping to stock it soon.

What's more, it's an unusual theme - we've had the Far Seas and Cruiser Warfare before it and not a lot else.

Artwork is VG and I'm sure my group will enjoy it.

What's more, I think this is a theatre of war that is likely to work very well in a card game - cat and mouse etc.

Although it has a board, the game revolves around cardplay. It is also compatible with the other HeroCard games, in that they all use the same system of cardplay.

Another game (games, actually) from Lost Battalion Games.
Card decks represent divisional (German) or Corps (Soviet) sized units. Individual cards represent battalions and regiments and ancillary units. Other cards represent terrain being fought over.

Game system is different and presents a learning curve until you become comfortable with the game mechanics. Then the game can play very quickly.

Four stand-alone games cover the Stalingrad campaign. Due out in 2007 is the Kursk campaign (another set of stand alone, but compatible with the Stalingrad decks.)

If you count Scifi wargames then this fits the bill. It is basically a variation on Modern Naval Battles in the Star Fleet universe. Pluses are the plastic damage markers that keep weapon cards in play and selectively reduce the damaged ships firepower. Also the art work is brilliant. Some find the mixing of ship races on the same side spoils the theme but this is consistent with other games such as Enemy in Sight, and actually improves the tactical possibilities in play. Still a favorite.

I knew I had another card game, but had to wait until I got home, because I couldn't remember the name. Another one I've had for some time, but never played. I recall the rules were confusing, and I see there's a better version here, so maybe this will finally hit the table.

This one has two decks, the north and the south.
