New to me, Pig War Islands by David Richardson, 1971.

I've ummed and arrghed about picking up this one. And finally decided, yes! I want to learn all about it - so thankfully, it was still at the used book store. Twenty-five dollars later, I'm glad to be learning all there is to know about....well,

Pig War Islands is a history of the San Juan Islands, (San Juan in particular) and the growng conflict between the Americans and the British (and the Hudson's Bay Company) during the 1850s - 1860s over where the border between Washington Territory and the British Columbia [sic] should run.

And the pig? Well, let's say a rather testy American settler said enough was enough when a big, black, British-owned boar started in on his potatoes (again).

The latest Dirk Pitt book Treasure of Khan by Clive Cussler and Dirk Cussler. I've been reading Clive Cussler since I was 12 when I picked up Raise the Titanic. Actually Clive Cussler gave up writing the stories a while back with his son Dirk writing the last two. The book isn't bad but Dirk Cussler just isn't the writer that his father is.

I'm reading Ghost Brigades, by John Scalzi. The (sort of) sequel to Old Man's War.

Once again, the book has elements of Starship Troopers and The Forever War, plus unique themes of it's own. It weighs in on what constitutes morality in the middle of a war, and what it really means to be human. The first book was excellent, and I believe this one surpasses it, which is rare, even for experienced writers. This series is a must-read for Sci-Fi fans. NOTE: Scalzi won the John W Campbell award for Best New Writer for Old Man's War - an accolade he richly deserved, IMHO

for J. Scalzi

Right now I'm reading Michael Connelly for the first time. I'm always on the lookout for good authors, and Mark Jackson recommended I try this one. Connelly writes detective thrillers, most of them about a Los Angeles police detective named Harry Bosch, and I've read and enjoyed a couple of those, but the one I'm on right now is a book called THE POET which follows a reporter who gets involved with an FBI investigation of the death of his brother, a police detective in Denver.

Connelly is a good writer. He makes the reader believe he really does know a lot about modern police procedures, makes his characters interesting, and delivers a satisfying blend of mystery, suspense, and resolution.

I am in the middle of Lonesome Dove which I have never read before. It is one of my wife's favorites so I had promised her I would read it sometime. It was lying on my shelf and I wasn't otherwise occupied so I began reading it this week.

I am not a huge fan of Westerns so I was not looking forward to this book too much but I have been pleasantly surprised so far.

I'm right in the middle of reading "The Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett. I decided to read this book after learning about the game here on BGG (although I haven't played the game yet). The book is good; definitely entertaining (after all I've read half of the approx. 1000 total pages and I plan on finishing it). But it's not great. I'm wondering why Kosmos chose THIS book for their line of literature-based games when there are so many titles out there to choose from (it's not a very recent title as it was published in 1989). Maybe they simply thought that the story line translated well to a boardgame. Mind you, I'm not trashing the book; just wondering.

I'd recommend the book to someone who's interested in the time period. The author provides insight as to what life was like back in the middle ages. And he definitely did his research regarding cathedral building. If you LOVE the game; then I would definitely recommend the book.

I'm nearly finished with Antietam: The Battle That Changed the Course of the Civil War by James M. McPherson. It's not so much a history of the battle as it is a look at the place of the battle in context, as the title suggests. I'm finding the extensive use of quotes from soldiers, politicians, civilians and newspapers really eye-opening.

Up next is A Farewell to Alms by Dr. Gregory Clark. It's a look into why the Industrial Revolution happened in Europe and not, say, China or even Japan. He argues that a confluence of behavioral changes happened that made it possible.

I just got A&A: Bulge this last week - and thanks to the "new nonfiction" section at the library, I'm reading Alamo in the Ardennes: The Untold Story of the American Soldiers Who Made the Defense of Bastogne Possible by John McManus.

It's his contention that Bastogne was a whole lot more important to the German offensive on 12/17/44 than it was on 12/25/44... and it was the frontline troops that slowed the Germans down that really turned the tide at the Bulge.

I just finished reading Frederick Taylor's The Berlin Wall: A World Divided, 1961-1989... which does a really nice job of balancing the atrocities of the GDR with the realpolitik of the Western powers.

I just got The Dark River, by John Twelve Hawks, follow up to The Traveler.

Very thought-provoking, well written high-tech Orwellian thriller about The Vast Machine where those who resist are cataloged, tracked and eliminated. Considering the technology already in place and the ways the government and business currently keep tabs on us, this future isn't very far away.

When I submit this, I'll be sending some more personal information out into the world.
