I'm looking for help here. I'm curious about games set in biblical times. I'm listing a few I am aware of, but I have not played any of them. Let me know if you feel any of these are worth picking up, and by all means add other games to the list. I'm thinking Old Testament biblical times here. Chariots, javelins and light infantry. 500BC and before. Egyptians, Hittites, Assyrians, etc.

I actually owned this one back in the '70s, but never got it to the table. I seem to recall it was fairly well thought of at the time.

One I was lucky to play and had fond memories of it. A game that needed four players no more or less to do it right.

And the very popular, "Beware of Greeks bearing gifts" result... it was one of the more interesting results tables.

This one would seem perfect for what I am looking for, and card-driven to boot. However, session reports that talk about taking hours to play a single turn make me cautious. Are there good scenarios? It wouldn't take much to talk me into this one.

Even the shortest scenario would take several hours to play.

It doesn't help any that the rulebook is sloppily edited and full of omissions and ambiguities.

I like the looks of the artwork on this one, especially the counters. Is this truly a wargame, a Euro, or something in between?

It is essentially Ancient Conquest (item #2 above) converted from being hex-based to area movement. I would say Brittania is based on AC rather than this being based on Brittania.

And that precludes it from being inspired by AC because ... ?

See here:

and here

In short, it's a full upgrade of the Command game. Personally I've found the ATO magazine games to be way too complex and, especially, table heavy, but I'll give it a look.

This and its follow up companion Ancients 2 took a pretty simple base system and tweaked to suit a large number of pre-gunpowder battles. It's been a while since I played it, but I recall it being quick to play and fun. There were a number of biblical era scenarions (as well as Bannockburn etc.)

Rules were slightly vague, especially around forced retreats. I lost one game as my opponent's retreat path saw his retreating units slowly and mazily zigzagging across the map in the general direction of home - but still staying on the map by game end, so I coudn't claim them for victory! Given that I'm a Scot and was playing the Scots in Bannockburn, this was particularly annoying!

Mike (an Englishman!) agreed that while there was nothing actually prohibiting it, it wasn't in the spirit of the rules - but he did it anyway! We wrote up some house rules around retreating after that....

Ancients 2 was stand alone, but simply added more units, maps and scenarios to the system.

A free to download game on King David's wars with Israel's enemies. This is a very simple generic game but it's not too bad. Despite being outnumbered eight against one, taking out the Israelities is not that easy in this game.

The game can be downloaded from the website below.

It's not been added to the BGG database yet, but RHB has another GBoH game in design (not yet on GMT's P500 list) called Genesis, which will cover the Chariot Era.
