Continuing my 'Battle' series of geeklists (see the full list below) on another topic of interest to me: Solo Games. This list tries to capture all the best games on the geek that are either solitaire or have a good solo variant.

I've trawled a load solo/solitaire geeklists to get the base list of 86 - I required a game to be mentioned on at least 3 lists to add it.
Feel free to add your own suggestions.
The initial order will be based on the number of times the games appeared on the geeklists I used. This will also be used as a tide-breaker, as will ranking if required.

The Battle
Some of these games receive increased ratings due to nostalgia while others that are not just for one player will not be rated purely on the basis of solitaire play. This list attempts to determine the best games to play solitaire!

1. Vote using the green thumbsup icon for the games you think play well solitaire. Feel free to add comments saying why you like them. ThumbsUp in comments will not be counted.
2. If you strongly dislike a game solitaire then you can add a comment with a thumbsdown or a THUMBSDOWN. Feel free to thumb down if you think the game is not suitable for this list - i.e. not playable solitaire!

I'll regularly review the list and re-sort it based on the Net number of thumbsup each game has.

The comment for each game is one from a user who rates it highly - not my comments!

A Strange Aeon: "I have only played a solo game of this, and I was blown away. The theme is tremendous, the game is hard, fun, and completely involving. I can't wait to play this solo again (probably tonight) and after that with more players, which I expect will make it even more of a blast.
Have played several more times, with 2 players, and it is AWESOME!!! The only downside is the length, which is closer to 5 or 6 hours than 3, but perhaps that will go down as well once we get better at it.
The downside to co-operative games is often that the theme drains out and you're left with making decisions about which cards to discard, which piece to move where, etc., like in LotR or Shadows Over Camelot. I'm hoping that never happens with this game, but even if it does, I bought the two expansions to introduce when the main game loses its flavor."

mistermarino: "Near perfect. Just the right balance of complexity and playability. Minimal replay value. Constant referencing of the paragraph booklet is more annoying now than it was 10 years ago, because I'm used to having a computer do all the bookkeeping, but still...an amazing and innovative system that finally gave the solo gamer a reason to smile. One of the many strengths of this was how personal it was--you became invested in the lives and fortunes of your little squad members. Even though replayability is limited, the scenarios provided really provide a great variety of missions, making it a terrific value."

The F&F expansion makes it all the more challenging and gives the players more decisions to make. Adding the Sauron Expansion adds a level of competition and takes away the randomness off rolling the die. I find that it's easy to get the girls to join in on game night with this game and it's always nice to have some girls to game with."

The casualty rate of Barbarian Princes brings roguelikes to mind, some people hate dying a lot, others find allure in the special feel of success attained in constant mortal danger.
If you belong to the latter group and don´t mind some clunkiness in game mechanics this is a free solo game tailor made for you."

RAF gives you the feel of being the C-in-C while London's Burning gives you the feel of being a squadron commander. I am a strategic player at heart, so RAF is awesome! I would recommend this game highly to anyone who wants a good game that reflects this critical battle. After 12 plays, this game still holds its own. Great fun each and every time! And I FINALLY won!!!! Luftwaffe 11, Tim 1."

mads29: "I played my first game, and it was amazing! Tense, fun - I won on my last turn. I played solo with the Ops Expert and Scientist, at the Intro level. Very fun! I'd say it was as tense as LotR, with a more satisfying theme (but then again I am a physician). I will introduce my wife to it tomorrow - she saw it laid out an was interested, which is a rarity. I will update how the couples play goes."

The rules are detailed but not overly complex and it provides a lot of gaming for the money. Started with the campaign game and don't feel overwhelmed by the rules. Includes smaller scenarios to but wasn't my cup of tea when the game arrived - jumped fully in.
Hopefully they do a reprint because I need a new map - my was a bit beaten when the game arrived (even if it was originally shrink-wrapped)."

Castiglione: "Fun solitaire romp in which the player controls nine crew members of a research station attempting to capture (at first) an alien life form gone amock. The game is sometimes too easy but the implementation of house rules corrects this to a certain degree. Basically, a classical assymetrical situation in which one power unit is running amuck, and players must decide between concentrating their forces (to increase punch in combat) and dispersing them (to increase the chances of finding the enemy)...and the clock is ticking because with each passing turn, there is a chance that the enemy will morph into something more powerful."

The copy I have is incomplete, but missing the most non-essential parts--two miniatures, 2 of the 115 room tiles, and all but one of the combat counters. Luckily, the combat counters are just a complicated way of simulating Rock Paper Scissors and I have plenty of minis. The two missing room tiles I'm not that concerned about. Have played a few times with friends, and had a blast! I need to start keeping session reports of my games."

dcjackso: "(10+ plays) Wonderful game covering the Battle of Britain, and my favorite solitaire game of any kind. This game is so under-rated on the Geek that it's a crime. (And yes, I have RAF, although I haven't played it yet--but I can't imagine a BoB game that could be better than LB.) The level at which Ben Knight designed LB is perfect--you really start to feel like you're one of the pilots, and it *hurts* to see them on the casualty list. Two other points are worth mentioning. When you're playing, you are constantly *praying* for rain in such a way that really gives insight into what it must have been like during the battle itself. (I created a modified system of determining weather, minimizing the huge effect that lots of rain or almost no rain can have on the game, while retaining some uncertainty about *when* it's going to rain.) Second, this game more than any other I've played, provides gripping AAR's which are two-fisted and quite emotional to read. Simply put, LB is a sleeper classic and one of my favorite games of all time."

M St: "A fantastic achievement - a solitaire carrier game with full fog of war, uncertain enemy OOB, and flexible scenarios. The uncertain OOB is probably the most amazing aspect, that is a realistic feature most other carrier games don't give you. And on the side it has (with 20 minute air impulses) the shortest turn length of any of the carrier boardgames, giving you a natural plane handling cycle like no other. Unlike many solitaire games, playability is nearly unlimited; I have played this dozens of times.
The price: this is one of the most complex games you are likely to find outside the decades old creeping featurism franchises (ASL, A3R, TK, WiF, etc.) where people are much more tolerant of lots of rules."

AngusBull: "Excellent! Very well done! Like the Holmes novels, it's all in the details.... You'll find that beating holmes at his game is quite a challenge but it plays great as a solitaire when you're in the mood for a game and can't find a partner."
