"Searchers after horror haunt strange, far places" -- H P Lovecraft

One of the true treats in literature is when an author is capable of creating a literary world. Not just a good book but a complete universe that encapsulates the story being told. J K Rowling's Harry Potter books are a perfect example of this. In her books we not only read about Harry Potter and his adventures at Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry but we explore a magical world that exists side by side with us, in the shadows of our own very world. It's rare but for those authors who can create and flesh out these fictional universes it's a fantastic treat for their readers. Mind you this ability isn't limited to just writers of the traditional fictional novel. George Lucas did it with his Star Wars Universe. Gene Roddenberry with Star Trek, Stan Lee with the Marvel Super Hero Universe and L. Frank Baum with his Land of Oz. It is this creation of a complete world in which their stories take place that raises their work and helps the story being told reach a new level of depth for it's audience.

H P Lovecraft is one such writer. His creation is called the Cthulhu Mythos and it is a world of cosmic monsters, horror and madness. I'm not going to go into a long description of Lovecraft and his stories as it's to expansive to be covered properly in such a short space as a geeklist introduction and chances are you are already familiar with at least some elements of his fictional world. Perhaps more so than myself. My intent here is not to examine Lovecraft's world itself but to examine how games have allowed us to explore it in the same way games about Star Wars, Superheroes and Harry Potter allow us to explore the worlds created by people like George Lucas, Stan Lee and J K Rowling.

The purpose of this list is as stated above is to explore the different games that immerse it's players in Lovercraft's universe of the Cthulhu Mythos. It's an amazing variety from the collectible card game to the classic boardgame. It's a popular game theme that seems if anything to be growing in the hobby.

One of the first Cthulhu games. This game was created by Chaosium which in general is more well known for their role playing games than anything else. Specifically their two big games Rune Quest and Call of Cthulhu. This game was not one of their best nor one of their more popular. Still it has a certain sentimentality for many of us for who our introduction to gaming in Lovecraft's universe started with Chaosium and it's products.

I bought this game back in the late 80's when I started getting back into comics towards the end of high school.

This game single-handily put me off of buying new board games for the next 10 years or more.

I wound up giving it to the guy I roleplayed Cthulhu with for awhile. Glad to hear the new version is a lot different. I couldn't account for it's popularity otherwise.

Cthulhu role playing, though, was my absolute favorite role-playing experience.

One of the earlier collectible card games also published by Chaosium. I tried to get into the game but never could get interested in the whole build a card deck concept which is a large part of collectible card gaming.

This game had some really cool artwork with a lot of it shared with Chaosium's role playing game which they were publishing at the same time. One card featured a picture from the cover from one of their RPG supplements called Arkham Asylum I think that I always thought was really cool. You can see in the picture below. Yes the attendants at the mental hospital aren't exactly what you would call human. devil

I would love to get my hands on a solid pile of these cards to give this game a spin! Somehow what everybody else considers a "cheap and easy to obtain out of date ccg" has become a bit of a grail for me over the last year. Between being sniped on 'the place that shall not be named" to being 3 seconds too late for trades and offers on the geek, to canceled potential trades during discussions, I can't seem to get my hands on it. I am about ready to try out the online version...

In terms of actual game play, this gets my vote for best CCG ever. Unfortunately, you do need a few cards in your collection to put together a decent deck.
It's a shame that Chaosium couldn't come up with some decent preconstructed decks for the game - which would have allowed casual players to experience the strengths of the game.
Moving to the Dreamlands and the New Aeon (despite the coolness of much of NA) also had the unfortunate effect of diluted the deckbuilding possibilities for players.

I agree that Chaosium ought to have sold more individual themed decks--at least a couple per expansion.

They did produce a single dual-deck set called, the "Standard Game Set" (pictured above), containing one "Steadfast" & one "Corrupt" deck. You used to be able to pick these up cheaply on eBay for about $6, apiece.

Also last I checked, Mythos booster boxes (B1, B2, & B3) were in the $25-35 range. The rarer Dreamlands expansion boxes were slightly higher, while New Aeon sets were very rare & very pricey ($100-$150).

Other than NA, it's not too expensive to pick up, at this point.

Fine game, and the best thing is that you don't have lives but rather marbles. So you lose by, erm losing all your marbles :-)

Artwork and atmosphere are excellent, as other contributors have noted, and you win not by staying alive/sane but rather by making a Story, Unique and clever mechanic.

Yep the finest CCG ever, but also the most flawed. I spent half my salary on this trying to get a full set of cards. Even then you need multiples to play most decks. Also many stories need hard to find rare cards to complete them. Thus off we go to the mail order shop in Utah, or other such internet places and pay silly money per card to get them.

Even after this it gets frustrating to make a four story deck based in one part of the world were all the cards assist each other. There used to be a guy called Cedric Chinn on the net who had done all the work for you and posted brilliant deck lists. He probably went insane and was committed to Arkham Asylum for his troubles.

The 2005 version of Arkham Horror. Truth is this game has little in common with it's 1987 ancestor other than the theme. It features the fantastic game components Fantasy Flight has become known for and lots of them. I've had to store all my bits in a Plano storage box (which works really well by the way).

Likely if you have played any one Cthulhu Mythos game it's this one.

Long, with fiddly bits, suffers from uninspired game play with few interesting decisions. Fails to evoke Lovecraftian atmosphere. I recommend Mythos [ http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/1800] instead.

Same here as above. Got it, fiddled with the fiddly bits, not enchanted with it. Of course, I've not obtained the expansions yet, but then I don't have a table big enough to play the basic set on.

It's a very pretty game, Mr. FFG, but you must not call it Lovecraft.

If I want to roleplay HPL, I'll pull out my old CoC RPG stuff and send folks out on the Masks of Nyarlathotep campaign or one of the shorter adventures.

This plus the King in Yellow is probably the best buy, CoC board-game-wise. The original is a sound but slightly dull and easy cooperative board game. King in Yellow allows a player to switch sides a la Betrayal at House on the Hil, and THAT makes the differencel. I wouldn't bother with the other expansions [but have them all!].

And it has many other fine qualities too! devil

If you ask me any game that makes you feel like everything you have been fighting to achieve for 3 hours could and may be ultimately futile and pointless captures the feel of Lovecraft pretty damn well. He follows a pretty straight formula in his novels; 1) the charcter gets involved in a sinister mythos plot, 2) the character gets deeper and deeper into the Mythos world which we should be no part of, 3) the Mythos wins or/and the character is left with his sanity sprayed all over a wall.

Sound like a game of Arkham Horror? Yes, yes it does. goo

Hastur aka The King In Yellow. I really like how Fantasy Flight has approached the expansions for Arkham Horror. Rather than just toss in a bunch of more of the same i.e. more item cards, spell cards and alike, they have decided to go the route of stories. Each one of the expansions takes the base game and uses it as just that. A base for a unique story of sorts connected with one of the classic literary tales. In this case it is a play called The King In Yellow that has come to play in Arkham. The play is of course a front for the Cult of Hastor and the adventurers in the game must deal with all that that brings.

Literary note: The King in Yellow is a a fictitious play that serves as a backdrop for most of the stories in Robert Chambers' The Yellow Sign, which was written in the early 20th century. Very creepy and interesting, but different from Lovecraft. For instance, Hastur is mentioned, but it sounds more like a place than a person/thing. Lovecraft loved the book and incorporated some of it into his fiction. Then Chaosium and other Cthulhu gamers added it in in other ways.

"The Yellow Sign" is a story in the collection entitled The King in Yellow by Robert W Chambers. The book was published in the late 19th Century (1895).

The first reference to Hastur was from an old Ambrose Bierce story where I believe he was a god. Lovecraft mentioned Hastur in the "The Whisperer in the Dark", but does not give a clear indication of the who/what/where of it. Hastur was later turned into a Great Old One, by August Derleth.

Another interesting twist to the Arkham Horror Game is Fantasy Flight added a literal expansion with this expansion. Specifically an expansion for the game's board. When added in this allows players to go from the train station in Arkham to the village of Dunwich. A rather unpleasant place as players soon discover.

The expansion includes as well some new adventurers, lots of new monsters, items and such. In that way it's very much like your normal game expansion. You simply blend in the new cards and pieces in with the old. The cool thing is the Dark Pharaoh or King in Yellow expansions can be laid over it (for lack of a better term).

The latest expansion for Arkham Horror due out in November.

I'm curious about how this one will work. I'm thinking likely it will be sort of a cross between Dunwich and the other two expansions. Not has as much general stuff as Dunwich (Kind of cool all the stuff you get with Dunwich) and be more like replacement cards in the way the other expansions work.

It should feature the "guardians" (sort of "positive heralds"; e.g. Noden). I'm curious to see how they'll work... for sure some help was needed by now (with all the three previous expansion mixed in, things have became pretty tough!).

Another collectible card game but this one seems to have caught on better than Mythos did. Published by Fantasy Flight it uses a lot of the same symbols as in the boardgame which is a nice touch as it ties the two together for folks who play both.

For those interested I just finished several microbadges for this game as well as two new ones for the Arkham Horror boardgame. They cost me 1 sanity each to make.

A more standard CCG, which might explain its greater popularity. Although honestly the two games are separated by a decent amount of time, and the CCG market has been anything but stable; random market forces probably played a big part too.

I fully agree with the above. When Mythos came out I played constantly with a fellow Lovecraftian and we had a blast every time. I bought CoC and didn't find it interesting enough to set up and play. I've been reading and rereading HPL for over thirty years now, and Mythos has the feel. CoC just doesn't do it (for me).

Quite good but not as Lovecraftian as Mythos. Strongly reminiscent of Netrunner CCG which isn't a negative comment since I think that was a superb game, let down only by its weak back-story.

Yes. Have to agree with most of the above. I bought enough cards to make a few decks. Played it about four times and then put it away. Unlike Mythos were I bankrupted myself buying zillions of cards and played it solidly for several years. I even searched for the perfect marbles to use as sanity markers.

I love this game. This would be kind of a fun beer and pretzels card game no matter what theme you used with it. In this case however they did a really nice job of incorporating the Cthulhu theme into the game and keep it tongue in cheek at the same time.

The game includes things like the tires man was not meant to mount which you can put on the car man was not meant to drive. Game strategy can include human sacrifice and having a zombie as the car's driver.

Usually when you have a card game which uses humor like this once you've played the game a few times the jokes start to wear thin. *cough* Munchkin *cough* This one however has a really nice game mechanic in it as well so it's got pretty decent re-playability.

It's a fun game, in its own way, but it's not Lovecraftian. Imagine if Namco made a Call of Cthulhu console video game.

I have no idea how this actually plays but the description sure sounds like the designers know their Cthulhu.

"As soon as a player loses all his Sanity, he goes insane and becomes a Cultist, moving counter-clockwise like a Monster, robbing the other players of their Sanity. The object? Be the last sane player in the game!"

Marvellous game with some truly innovative mechanics, especially the one where you hang damage counters on top of your cardboard minis. Does not encourage aggressive play, though, so can be a bit slow after game number 1.

We played this last night. It's basically a solo/co-operative game if you use Cthulu. We found it was actually a little too easy. Also, it doesn't really evoke that Lovecraftian atmosphere. Still, the game offers some madcap fun and rewards a little savvy strategic play, so I enjoyed it.

Basically this is a nerd's paradise. Zombie Spider-Man, Wolverie, Hulk, and Captain America teaming up with some Predators, the Hellboy guys and a bunch of random monsters/monster hunters to take on Cthulu and his cultists. It doesn't get much cooler than that.

The best Clix game, in my view. Real attempt to fix the act, act, have a breather silliness of the originals. Specifically in relation to Cthulhu the Big Guy and avatar are great and so is the Deep One but the Mig-Go Is BAAAAAD, and the Brine Witch is weak. There is also an allusion to HP Lovecraft in Freak Show. Of that, the less said, the better.

Don't forget Unspeakable Words, the 2007 Cthulu word game where scoring is based on the number of angles found in each letter. I don't own it and haven't played it but I had a good chuckle at the concept before going insane.

I do own and have played. It's a fun little filler, and the non-Scrabble scoring system means you don't need to memorize lists of words using Q and Z. We do let people use proper names, but only if they are non-human proper names from Mythos stories .

(And honestly, even if you never play the game, you get 30 little Cthulhu statues. How can you go wrong with 30 little Cthulhu statues?)

This site has a couple of cthulhu parody's, as well as other cds and curiosities.

I saw a screening of the 20 minute or so movie of this back in 2001 at NecronomiCon in Providence, RI. At least one of the creators, Andrew Leman, was there. It was really very amusing, so check it out if you can. I think there is a small Quicktime version you can download at the above link.

Back at NecronomiCon, I believe Mr. Leman said he could not sell copies of the film because Chris Sarandon, who was in the film briefly, is a member of the Screen Actors Guild and the producers, being small independents, were not. I guess things must have changed because you can now buy it.

Chris Sarandon? Prince Humperdink from The Princess Bride? That I'll have to check out, then.
