Discussion Thread is Here!

The original Chain of Generosity is here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/23326/ This list is a continuation.

The Chain has been, and continues to be, an enormous success. Thank you to all the people who've kept it going for over two years!

Boardgamegeek is a wonderful place. The friendly, helpful, generous users here make this one of the best online communities. I want to contribute to that spirit, so I have created the BGG Chain of Generosity.

Here's how the BGG Chain of Generosity (The Chain) works:

Step 1: I will seed the list with a giveaway game. Anyone who wants that game can leave a comment to that effect. After 2 days (on Friday) I will randomly choose (using the random integer generator at random.org) a recipient for the game, and geekmail them to set up shipping to their house.

Step 2: The recipient of the game will then choose a game from their collection (probably from their trade list) and post it as an item here for more people (or maybe the same people) to comment on and enter. After about 2 days (this can vary) they will do a drawing, and a that person will win the game.

Step 3: The new recipient repeats step 2.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

RULES:

1. You must comment to the item in question indicating you wish to be in the drawing to recieve it in order to be eligible to win.

2. If you win one, you MUST post a game of your own to give away in this fashion. If you don't like that idea, don't play.

3. In the unlikely event that no offers are made on your game by 48 hours after posting, try a different game in its place.

4. If you wish to start a second (or third, or fourth) chain, post an item to the geeklist and put "SEED" in bold in the description. For those later in the chain, identify which chain your game belongs to.

5. Sender pays shipping, unless he indicates in his entry that the recipient will and under what grounds (International shipping, etc). Anyone signing up to receive an item where recipient pays shipping agree to do so.

Pretty simple rules, eh?

Other Considerations:

The game you post should be one that most of the BGG community might want to have. Ideally, one on your trade list. The dual-purpose of this list is to spread goodwill and give unliked games a good home.

You can win multiple times. Just keep in mind each time you win a game you'll be giving another one away.

FULL CIRCLE CHAIN

OFFERING H

The Red Dragon Inn

Condition: Like new. I have played 3 or 4 times with my sons and it is fun, but it's just not my cup of tea. So on to a new home.

DEADLINE:

I will keep the item open until January 18th. I will make a random draw to determine a winner, and notify them on this list & by GM.

THE REVISED RULES:

1. The Full Circle Chain continues until its originator (bill_andel) replies to an item with the comment "Full Circle!" prior to the deadline date for that item. The originator then becomes the winner of that item, rather than the winner being chosen by random selection.

2. If the originator does not claim "Full Circle!", the winner must be selected using random.org with the time-stamped output appended to the description of the item offered.

3. If the originator of the chain has claimed any of the last five items at the time he or she claims "Full Circle!", he must re-seed the chain and the chain continues. The reseeded item must contain not one, but TWO offerings. This bonus offering will be drawn separately (c.f. the "Share The Love" chain). If the originator has not claimed any of the last five items in the chain, then the chain may be closed at the discretion of the originator.

Example 1: Originator offers item A, winner of A offers B, winner of B offers C, winner of C offers D, winner of D offers E. Originator claims "Full Circle!" for item E and closes chain. (If originator does not claim "E", he or she could claim any offering thereafter to close the chain.)

Example 2: Originator offers item A, winner of A offers B, winner of B offers C with two items. Originator claims "Full Circle!" for item C and MUST provide item D to continue the chain. (Originator will not be able to close chain until at least item H.)

4. Offerings shipped to the continental US only.

5. Winners must provide the next offering within 7 days of winning. Items should be offered for a period not to exceed 14 days. If an item receives no interest within 7 days, the offering should be modified or replaced (which restarts the "not to exceed 14 day" period).

6. These rules must accompany each offering in the chain. All offerings in the chain must be lettered "A", "B", "C", etc. If "Z" is reached, continue with "AA", "BB", etc. All offerings must include the date on which the winner will be selected.

SEED: The Chosen One Chain
The Choosing of The Chosen One
$50 CoolStuffInc.com Gift Certificate
$100 Donation to Habitat for Humanity in YOUR name*
and 100GG thanks to BGG**

Hey all!

I am starting up a new chain that will be called The Chosen One Chain. Here's what it'll look like:
Quote:
The Chosen One Chain

The current chose one is:
???TBD???

Please the Chosen One and you may become Chosen!

My offering for the Chosen One is:
[game]

A random winner of this game will be selected if I am not chosen by:
[date]

Rules:
1. Games are offered and won randomly per the standard BGG Chain of Generosity process except as modified below.
2. The current Chosen One has the privilege of claiming any game posted in The Chosen One Chain by posting the comment "You have been CHOSEN!" to the comments section of the current offer.
3. When the Chosen one claims again, they immediately win the current offer, lose their status as the Chosen One and the person who posted that game becomes the new Chosen One.
4. As the winner of the previous offer, the prior Chosen One must now put a game up as normal.
5. The originator of this chain (gdapkus) reserves the right to appoint a new Chosen One if a game is not Chosen within 10 rounds of offers. The purpose of this rule is to keep the chain alive if the Chosen One becomes inactive or seems to be abusing or neglecting the privilege. Use of this rule is solely at the originator's discretion and is not mandatory.
6. Listings should last between 2 and 7 days. If no interest is indicated after 48 hours, please sweeten or change your offer.
7. This is a US chain. International recipients must be willing to pay shipping cost at the sender's discretion.

Purpose:
The Chosen One Chain is meant to be a premium chain, the cream of the crop. When making offers consider what the Chosen One might be interested, try to get yourself Chosen. Hopefully, even if the Chosen one passes on your offer, you'll make someone very happy and give them the chance to catch the Chosen One's eye. While there are no mandatory minimums, players are especially encouraged to make offers that truly meet the original guideline "The game you post should be one that most of the BGG community might want to have." Hopefully by offering the chance at an additional privilege, this chain will be self correcting, and not depend on a few especially generous individuals as some have.

Previously Chosen Ones:
none

To get the ball rolling, I first need to select the first Chosen One. (No, it won't be me.) The selection process will not follow the normal rules for the chain. Instead:
1. I am offering a $50 Gift Certificate to CoolStuffInc.com $100 donation to Habitat for Humanity* as a prize
2. I'm asking anyone who believes that they can give what it takes to become the chosen one to submit what they will offer to become the first Chosen One.
3. You have 1 week to enter. I will choose the first Chosen One on 1/22/10.
4. The person I choose will then offer their entry to a random winner, and from that point on, the rules as stated above will apply.

The choice of the first Chosen one is mine alone, but I will consider thumbs given to the entries, so please thumbe the entries you like.

Greg

*I was originally going to give away a gift certificate to Cool Stuff Inc as a prize, but I just can't justify it to myself to be spending money to give away to others for entertainment when there is such an obvious, immediate and real need for our generosity out there. Rather than not start the chain, I've decided to make a donation to Habitat for Humanity (habitat.org) in the name of the first Chosen One. I realize that this will likely reduce the number/quality of entries, but I'd like the first Chosen One to be a truely generous soul anyway, so it kinda works out. In the spirit of generosity, enter this chain, not for what you can get, but for what you can give to others.

EDIT:
**BGG is offering to match any Haiti Donation with GG. The Chosen one will be the recipient of that love as the donation will be made in his/her name.

SEED! NEW CHAIN!

Neighbourly gift offering:
Bohnanza
Bohnanza - Erweiterungs Set
Sweetner: Save Doctor Lucky
Vancouver Trinket! I'll be including something small from the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Store as a small token representative of where I am (see item 4 below).

Notes:
This is the German version of the game. The game itself is language independent and, if you like, I can print out the rules in English and include it. The games are opened and used, but are in good condition. The cards are still crisp.

A random winner of this gift will be selected by:
January 23rd, 2010

Rules:
1. Games are offered and won randomly per the standard BGG Chain of Generosity process except as modified below.
2. The winner of the game *should* be outside your own country. This chain was designed to better Canadian/American international relationships.
3. If no one from the neighbouring country is in the draw by the draw date, you may draw someone from your own country.
4. When sending your gift, it is highly encouraged, but optional, that you include a small token representative of something unique to your state/province.
5. When listing your offer, change the name of the chain in the title to reflect the correct spelling of "neighbour/neighbor" in your country.
6. Listings should last between 3 and 7 days. If no interest is indicated after 48 hours, please sweeten or change your offer.
7. This is primarily a Canada/US chain. The sender must pay full shipping costs within Canada/US. International recipients are welcome to participate but must be willing to pay shipping cost at the sender's discretion.

Purpose:
The Love Thy Neighbour Chain is designed primarily for card games and any small games that can fit in the US small flat-rate boxes. However, exceptionally generous individuals are welcomed to offer bigger prizes to their neighbours if they have the means.

The Share the Love kiss Chain

Thanks to David (kingmaker fan) for the last chain items!

This is the 16th item in the chain. And here's the sitch: since the New Year, work has been absolutely nuts with regards to business travel. Whoever thinks that a traveling job is glamorous has never held one. Every city gets reduced to airports, hotels, conference rooms, and restaurants. I come home for the weekends, spending that time with my family before heading out again, and this chain has languished as a result. It's time to set things right, but I need for them to be simple.

My first thought was, "Why not offer a couple of new games from an online retailer?" Cool, let me go check my favorites. But then I thought, "Why not allow the contestants to choose for themselves?" Yeah, that's the ticket! So here goes:

The winner of the primary offer will be the lucky recipient of Small World a $35 Gift Certificate to CoolStuffInc.

The secondary winner will be the lucky recipient of San Juan a $20 Gift Certificate to CoolStuffInc.

There you have it: two prizes of cool stuff cash. I will be choosing a winner on Saturday, 30 January. Only submissions time stamped 29 January or before will be considered! 11:59 PM CST 1/29/10 is good; 12:00 AM 1/30/10 is too late! Don't procrastinate!

Rules for the Share the Love kiss Chain:

1. The person posting a Share the Love chain item must offer 2 packages. Each package must contain at least one game, but may contain multiple games or a game and other items.

2. One package is pre-designated the "Chain" Item. The second package is the "Giveaway" item. When the winner is drawn, 2 drawings are made.

The first drawing is the entrant who gets the "Chain" package, and will post the next item in the chain. The second drawing entrant gets the "Giveaway" package. The winner of the Giveaway package does not post a chain item: They simply get their giveaway package for free!

3. All entrants have an equal chance of being selected for either item. An entrant may be asked only to be drawn for the Chain item, but may not ask to be entered only for the "Giveaway" package.

4. No entrant may win both the Chain and Giveaway package, unless they are the only entrant.

5. Entrants must indicate their interest by commenting "I'm in" or similar. Thumbs do NOT count as valid entries.

6. If the Share the Love chain makes it back around to unixrevolution, he has the option of closing it off for good.

7. Because microbadges are only awarded to users who have given a game away, winners of "Giveaway" packages will not receive microbadges.

Thank you to gdapkus for the great charity idea and the surprise game he topped it off with! That was very generous!

The current Chosen One is:

mbmbmbmbmb

Please the Chosen One and you may become Chosen!

My offering for the Chosen One is a mixture of twelve games with a taste of many categories and mechanics:

Abstract - Cathedral (Travel version)
Action/Dexterity - Bobbin' Bumblebee
Area Control - Ark of the Covenant
Auction/Bidding - Monkeys on the Moon
Card Drafting - Rook
Deduction - Clue Express
Hand Management - Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation
Negotiation - Witch Trial
Party Game - Once Upon a Time (Beat up box but cards are good)
Set Collection - Basari
Tile Placement - Kingdoms
Wargame - King Maker

***Bonus***
I have been inspired by the generosity of the recent mystery box I have been given by dujo, and I decided that I will include an additional mystery game in the mix. If it is feasible, I will give you one item from your wish list in addition to the above games (if not feasible you will still get another game that you do not have). I can't promise it will be possible for everyone but I can do it for the first three people that are 'in' at the least.

A random winner of this game will be selected if I am not chosen by:
January 31st

Rules:
8. The Chosen One cannot pick his own offering of games.

Wow, thanks Lance! I totally forgot rule #3 but it looks like I won anyway. Can't wait to get that package.

Anyway, here's the offering for this one. The theme here is "little package: big fun" -- games that are portable and work best with lots of people. The first two are sealed, the third is opened but unplayed, and the last "bonus" game is a bit worn but totally playable.

1) You've heard of snakes on a plane? What about gnomes on a sub?
2) All alike or all different. The quickest eyes will win this one.
3) Despite the odd couples theme, this tight Knizia game needs three or more players to work.
4) The goal of the game? Oh, I'm terribly sorry.

And in terms of non-game stuff, I'm not sure yet, but I know that one thing will really please Buffy fans who weren't satisfied with only 7 seasons...

I will accept entries and guesses up through 11:59:59 PM EST, Monday, Feb 1.[/b] The drawing will be that evening, and hopefully I'll be able to mail the package on Wednesday. EDIT: I'm extending the deadline to 11:59:59 PM EST Feb 8, to allow the chain (and the apparently traditional surprise dude) to catch up.

I have received guesses from the following people:
personwholives
tawnos76
noddingoff
matrixrenegade

If you'd like me to tell you if you're correct, please let me know in your guess. Otherwise I'll assume that you don't want anything spoiled.

Final edit: 6 entrants with 7 correct guesses between them. So out of the 13 tickets, the winner is...

The Love Thy Neighbor Chain

Big thanks to McScaryMuffin for starting this new chain and for picking me as the second link.

Now let's get to the neighborly gift offering:
Guillotine
Quiddler (oooh, Speed Quiddler looks like a nice second use for this deck)
And maybe a northwest trinket of some sort. I admit, I don't have one in mind yet.

*edit*
Sweetening the offer, I'm now including:
SET

All three games are in good shape. Guillotine is unplayed. I only unwrapped the cards to see if it was in fact the misprinted issue mentioned below. If no one throws in for these 3 games in a couple of days I think I'll just have to keep them on my shelf and offer up something different (rule 6).
**

Notes:
This copy of Guillotine is the misprint release.

The small squares in front of "2 points" should be plus signs. I have replacements for these Count and Countess cards. But there are 3 other cards that I don't have replacements for. Play is not effected by this misprint.

A random winner of this gift will be selected by:
February 2nd ... my son's upcoming birthday party is going to distract me until then.

Rules:

---

*edit* To point out that the one who started this chain is MrScaryMuffin, not what I said above. But I'm not correcting my typo because I think it's funny. No offense to MrScaryMuffin of course. It's just that if I ever ate at McD's I would totally order one of those.

Given the lack of interest, I'm shaking up the deal.

The sweetener is Risk: Godstorm. Because - what's geekier than the fusion of greek myths and board games? And it has elephants! Complete and in very good condition.

You also still get Shadowlord! and Bermuda Triangle. Both are copies for playing and not pristine specimens for collecting.

Given the changes, I'll wait until Feb 14 to draw a name from the hat.

And the winner is... David Dawn! PM sent.

Full Circle Chain

I personally enjoy this one more than any other version of Carcassonne, but I might be in the minority. It's in excellent condition and its OOP if that matters to you in the slightest.

THE REVISED RULES (cut and paste):

14 days from now is the 16th, so if I don't get any takers by then, I will dig something else up out of my collection.

Thanks in advance!

Chosen One Chain!

I am offering up my copy of Twilight Struggle because I never get a chance to play 2 player games anymore. Well I do, but my girlfriend took one look at this one and stuck her tongue out at me when I suggested it.

It is in excellent condition, I think played only a handful of times.

Note: this is not the new deluxe addition, but it is still awesome, and seriously this is the number 3 game on the geek and you can get it for free.

I will let this one run for 7 days so it will end on the 9th. I do apologize that I will be out of town on that day so I won't be able to post the winner until late that night.

The Share the Love kiss Chain

Special thank you to Beowulf for the last prize and the opportunity to pick out anything from CoolStuffInc.

This is the 17th item in the Share the Love Chain. The winner of the primary offer will receive their pick of the following three games:
-Ingenious (small damage on box and board surface nick, but never played and pieces are still in the unopened bag)
-Ruin New in shrinkwrap
-Inversé New in shrinkwrap

The runner up will win one of the games on the list that I select for free as a gift.

As my first chain of generousity, I hope a number of you might enjoy some of these games. I hope many of you will say you are in for this opportunity on or before February 12th.

arrrhGood luck to all!arrrh

Come on, its got a stern looking Nappy, soldiers. lots of battles. Fun fun fun. Scare the heck out of your wimpy Eurogamer friends (as if a grognard would have such friends). whistle

The Original Chain

I'd like to thank Ken (artfuldodge2) for his generous offering and continue the original chain with a very original classic game, Sid Sackson's Acquire. While I enjoy this game a lot, it does not play well with two and does not play in an hour or less. Consequently, it's not getting to the table that often. Rather than having it languish on my shelf, I'd like to find it a good home.

I am offering the Avalon Hill Bookcase Edition (pictured) which I bought used a few years ago. It's complete and in very good shape. EDIT: Free shipping to the continental US and Canada. All others remit 10 GG per $1 of shipping costs. I'll leave this up until the end of February.

If you want in, please thumb this post instead of replying. That way I can use the same utility used for the GG for Games Lotteries to randomize a winner.

At last, the long awaited continuation of...
THE GROUCH CHAIN

Started by yours truly, this chain came full circle. Its mission - to spreaad generosity through Ameritrash for all - is too vital to let fade. And that's why I continue the chain today with the offer of a complete, and playable (if well worn) copy of the 1985 WEG edition of Junta. This is the nastiest negotiation game since Diplomacy, with a much better sense of humor.

Each player is the head of a ruling family in a fictional Bannanna Republic trying to line his or her family's Swiss bank account with the most foreign aid money before the benificence of the world's superpowers runs out. Players can thwart one another through political influence, assasination and even the occassional coup, which is resolved by a mini-wargame within the game. Hilarious fun as long as you play with very good friends who won't hold in-game skulduggery against you or you play with complete strangers who'll you'll never see again.
devil

I've been having great fun running some play-by-forum games of this. When Tanga offered the more recent WEG edition cheap, I couldn't resist. My weakness is your gain.

EDIT: Free shipping to the continental US and Canada. All others remit 10 GG per $1 of shipping costs. I'll leave this up through February 28. In addition to the game, the lucky winner will receive 8 GG with which to buy a Junta microbadge of their choice.

The Hints:

Game 1: A simulation of what could be argued as America's pastime. Plus one of its expansions.

Game 2: Look for the clues they are hiddend in the sand.

This box will also feature some other goodies of course.

Geekmail your game guesses for a bonus entry.

Thanks to Undead Viking Well lets see no love for Beuwolf so lets try Reef Encounter. The game is complete but the box has a crease on the bottom right corner running from the Z-man logo to just under that fish.

Please the Chosen One and you may become Chosen!

My offering for the Chosen One is:
Reef Encounter.

A random winner of this game will be selected if I am not chosen by:
February 20, 2010

------------------------------------------------

Rules:
8. The Chosen One cannot pick his own offering of games.

Time to randomize the name and the ol randomizer tells me that the winner is Number 1
