Discussion Thread is Here!

The original Chain of Generosity is here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/23326/ This list is a continuation.

The Chain has been, and continues to be, an enormous success. Thank you to all the people who've kept it going for over two years!

Boardgamegeek is a wonderful place. The friendly, helpful, generous users here make this one of the best online communities. I want to contribute to that spirit, so I have created the BGG Chain of Generosity.

Here's how the BGG Chain of Generosity (The Chain) works:

Step 1: I will seed the list with a giveaway game. Anyone who wants that game can leave a comment to that effect. After 2 days (on Friday) I will randomly choose (using the random integer generator at random.org) a recipient for the game, and geekmail them to set up shipping to their house.

Step 2: The recipient of the game will then choose a game from their collection (probably from their trade list) and post it as an item here for more people (or maybe the same people) to comment on and enter. After about 2 days (this can vary) they will do a drawing, and a that person will win the game.

Step 3: The new recipient repeats step 2.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

RULES:

1. You must comment to the item in question indicating you wish to be in the drawing to recieve it in order to be eligible to win.

2. If you win one, you MUST post a game of your own to give away in this fashion. If you don't like that idea, don't play.

3. In the unlikely event that no offers are made on your game by 48 hours after posting, try a different game in its place.

4. If you wish to start a second (or third, or fourth) chain, post an item to the geeklist and put "SEED" in bold in the description. For those later in the chain, identify which chain your game belongs to.

5. Sender pays shipping, unless he indicates in his entry that the recipient will and under what grounds (International shipping, etc). Anyone signing up to receive an item where recipient pays shipping agree to do so.

Pretty simple rules, eh?

Other Considerations:

The game you post should be one that most of the BGG community might want to have. Ideally, one on your trade list. The dual-purpose of this list is to spread goodwill and give unliked games a good home.

You can win multiple times. Just keep in mind each time you win a game you'll be giving another one away.

Aluminum box, played a couple of times. It's a fine game, but doesn't have a place in my library.

Sorry for the delay.
Free shipping anywhere, to make up for delaying the geek chain.

Drawing the winner on the 6th of November.

CHOSEN ONE CHAIN

So I did my homework and it seems like the current Chosen One likes fantasy-themed games. Conveniently, he also keeps his wishlists/hot lists up to date. Hopefully, he will like my offering.

Rules Copypasta:
1. Games are offered and won randomly per the standard BGG Chain of Generosity process except as modified below.
2. The current Chosen One has the privilege of claiming any game posted in The Chosen One Chain by posting the comment "You have been CHOSEN!" to the comments section of the current offer.
3. When the Chosen one makes the above announcement, he immediately wins the current offer, lose their status as the Chosen One and the person who posted that game becomes the new Chosen One.
4. As the winner of the offer, the prior Chosen One must now put a game up as normal.
5. The originator of this chain (gdapkus) reserves the right to appoint a new Chosen One if a game is not Chosen within 10 rounds of offers. The purpose of this rule is to keep the chain alive if the Chosen One becomes inactive or seems to be abusing or neglecting the privilege. Use of this rule is solely at the originator's discretion and is not mandatory.
6. Listings should last between 2 and 7 days. If no interest is indicated after 48 hours, please sweeten or change your offer.
7. This is a US chain. International recipients must be willing to pay shipping cost at the sender's discretion.

Purpose:
The Chosen One Chain is meant to be a premium chain, the cream of the crop. When making offers consider what the Chosen One might be interested, try to get yourself Chosen. Hopefully, even if the Chosen one passes on your offer, you'll make someone very happy and give them the chance to catch the Chosen One's eye. While there are no mandatory minimums, players are especially encouraged to make offers that truly meet the original guideline "The game you post should be one that most of the BGG community might want to have." Hopefully by offering the chance at an additional privilege, this chain will be self correcting, and not depend on a few especially generous individuals as some have.

The Chosen One has graciously accepted my offering!

closed Love Thy Neighbor Chain

Hopefully an interesting decision to be made by one of our neighbors, a Canadian eh? The winner will have the choice of one game from group 1 or any two games from group 2 and group 3 or three games from group 3.

A winner will be chosen from the Canadian participants on Friday Nov 12th. If there are no Canadian participants we'll select a winner from the rest of the lot.

1. Choose one from group one... Acquire, Beowulf: The Movie Board Game, Quits, ThinkBlot

or

2. Choose two from group two and three... Save Doctor Lucky, Saga, Sole Mio!, Dead Man's Treasure

or

3. Choose three from group three...Catch the Match, Lord of the Rings: The Duel, Splice Pirateology Card Game, Mister Bill, Mille Bornes, Mystery Rummy: Jekyll & Hyde, The Count of Carcassonne

- - -

Rules:
1. Games are offered and won randomly per the standard BGG Chain of Generosity process except as modified below.
2. The winner of the game *should* be outside your own country. This chain was designed to better Canadian/American international relationships.
3. If no one from the neighboring country is in the draw by the draw date, you may draw someone from your own country.
4. When sending your gift, it is highly encouraged, but optional, that you include a small token representative of something unique to your state/province.
5. When listing your offer, change the name of the chain in the title to reflect the correct spelling of "neighbour/neighbor" in your country.
6. Listings should last between 3 and 7 days. If no interest is indicated after 48 hours, please sweeten or change your offer.
7. This is primarily a Canada/US chain. The sender must pay full shipping costs within Canada/US. International recipients are welcome to participate but must be willing to pay shipping cost at the sender's discretion.

Purpose:
The Love Thy Neighbour Chain is designed primarily for card games and any small games that can fit in the US small flat-rate boxes. However, exceptionally generous individuals are welcomed to offer bigger prizes to their neighbours if they have the means.

Drawing Friday November 12th

Edits...
1. Nov. 10, 2010 - added options...Beowulf, Quits, ThinkBlots, Dead Man's Treasure, Count of Carcassonne

Thanks Kevin.

After discussing it with Kevin and watching this chain stagnate for the last while, I've decided that I'm going to close this chain out.

I'm going to sit back and think a bit and I might start a new chain with more shipping friendly conditions in the distant future, something that will hopefully inspire lots of generosity and participation. In the meantime, there are plenty of awesome chains to participate in.

First I would like to thank the new chosen one. The AH Expansion has been on my radar for a long time but being unemployed I couldn't justify picking it up. So I see the Chosen one has Ticket to Ride on his wish list. With a 3 (Like to have) so This may stir his pot. This is (IMHO) a VERY good version of TTR. The passengers (when used) add quite a bit to the game (but exclude them for a nice easy TTR family friendly game but at least the option is there)

I will also include
Ticket to Ride: The Dice Expansion
as a sweetener for the chosen one. This is compatible with all versions of TTR so you can play without the cards if you wish (better for small children)

Speaking of small children. I had to pull the dice expansion from the listing as my 6 year old saw me putting it into a box to make sure it all fit and had a fit himself. He likes the dice better then the cards (I don't blame him as his hands are rather small). So Dice are out but the game is still one of the better TTR games IMHO

A winner will be chosen by random.org on Friday November 12th at 10pm EST if this is not chosen.

Now some explanation. I won Elixir on May 8th, and was sure I had posted a follow up item right away. Someone was polite enough to GM me last weekend, and so I'm finally posting a follow-up listing.

As such, I'll list a few options here. Just respond with "in" and you'll get an entry. Bonus entry if you also post an amusing anecdote in regard to grouchiness.

You can pick one of the following games:

I'm usually a gentleman, not a grouch. I hold the door open at grocery stores for strangers as I enter or exit. One time as I did so, a middle-aged grouch of a woman stopped in the doorway and said to me, "Uh, NO. I'm an independent woman. I don't need some MAN to open my doors for me!"

"Suit yourself," I replied, slamming the door in her face as hard as I could, knocking her over. As I walked away, I shook my head, saying "Most people say 'thank you' when you're nice to them. Others ought to keep their mouths shut."

I'm in for Bang! It reminds me of the sound that door made as it hit her face, which I liked a lot.

I'm in for Bang! as well, though I cannot top the first grouchy story.

I was running late to go off to a game night over a year ago. As I was heading upstairs my wife stopped me to say she had something for me. I grouchily said, "Can I just go upstairs and change first?" Needless to say she didn't want to give me the surprise when I came downstairs. It turned out she wanted to give me an early birthday present of two game realated t-shirts that had just arrived in the mail (one shirt for Hive and one 'Hands off the Cheetos' shirt). I could have worn one of them that night. But thanks to my attitude I didn't get to see them until my actual birthday rolled around a few weeks later. Maybe this was more of a jerkiness anecdote.

I'm in.

Since you didn't say that the author had to be the grouch in the story, here is one from long ago. When I transferred to Michigan from California shortly after I began my career (mid 1980's), a lady with several more years in then me in the office wanted the phone number of another office. I showed her how to find the address in the directory (which she didn't appear to be aware existed). And she replied loudly and angrily, "Well, I don't know what you people did in California but out here we are too busy working, to read all this crap!". I politely apologized for trying to help her!

Edit: Didn't really need a period before the last exclamation point

Further edit: You know, she could very well have been the woman in comment #1!

for his generosity.

I have to apologize as well for delaying this, being crazy busy with work, I also don't have the biggest collection, but I hope that I can entice someone on the following, even if it is just one person who would win all three of the games.

The runner up will pick a game off the list, and the winner will receive the other two.

A) Frenzy
B) Monopoly Express
C) Dead Hand Chaos Poker

I will pay the first $12 of any international shipping and ship to the U.S. for free.

Rules for the Share the Love kiss Chain:

1. The person posting a Share the Love chain item must offer 2 packages. Each package must contain at least one game, but may contain multiple games or a game and other items.

2. One package is pre-designated the "Chain" Item. The second package is the "Giveaway" item. When the winner is drawn, 2 drawings are made.

The first drawing is the entrant who gets the "Chain" package, and will post the next item in the chain. The second drawing entrant gets the "Giveaway" package. The winner of the Giveaway package does not post a chain item: They simply get their giveaway package for free!

3. All entrants have an equal chance of being selected for either item. An entrant may be asked only to be drawn for the Chain item, but may not ask to be entered only for the "Giveaway" package.

4. No entrant may win both the Chain and Giveaway package, unless they are the only entrant.

5. Entrants must indicate their interest by commenting "I'm in" or similar. Thumbs do NOT count as valid entries.

6. If the Share the Love chain makes it back around to unixrevolution, he has the option of closing it off for good.

7. Because microbadges are only awarded to users who have given a game away on the Chain of Generosity, winning the "Giveaway" package does not constitute eligibility for a Chain of Generosity Participant microbadge.

First, thanks to lordunborn for his generosity in posting TTR: Marklin. We've recently become big fans of the TTR series, and this is going to be hitting the table a lot!

So, I took a look at the Chosen One's Wishlist. I'm offering two items from his list, hoping that he'll jump at them so that I will be the Chosen One. I see he's interested in a lot of different games, so I thought I'd post these.

In addition to the Space Hulk Death Angel Card Game, the following game will be included in this package:

Forbidden Island

Both games are new, and still in shrinkwrap.

It's likely that these will be mailed via USPS Priority Flat Rate box. As such, there's a possibility that I'll be filling out the box with a few extra goodies!

A winner will be chosen by random.org on Saturday November 20th after 9:00 PM Central Time if this has not been chosen.

OK, we have 9 entries. Random.org says "8", so the lucky winner is:

The box arrived this morning, and I had a lot of fun opening it up with the kids and exploring the (well-packaged) contents inside! They helped me sort out the packing peanuts into another box, and were very excited about everything inside.

First up, a documentary about Nightglider's local hockey team called Road Hogs. Looks like a pretty cool film!

Next, Space Hulk: Death Angel came out of the box! Brand new and in the shrink -- I think the only thing he did was rip off the price tag!

Also included was a Fightball deck pack -- looks like an interesting real-time card game!

Nestled securely in the bottom of the box was Forbidden Island -- also new and in the shrink.

And here's the shot of everything together:

Overall, a fantastic and generous package -- thanks so very much!

Please go vote in these polls on the Chain of Generosity Discussion Thread, or vote in them below. The future of the Chain of Generosity depends on your answers!

View post on Chain of Generosity Discussion Thread

Poll
Should the BGG Chain of Generosity be carried out in new, separate geeklists?
Yes. I think it would help to bring new people in as it would be on the "New" and "Hot" lists for geeklists, as well as help to remove the clutter and confusion of so many threads.
No, I don' think it should be split up. I like only having one subscription to manage and one geeklist to check. It's not cluttered or confusing.

Poll created by unixrevolution

Poll
If you voted Yes above, how should the Chain of Generosity threads be split up?
Each and every thread should have its own geeklist.
There should be a geeklist for US-only threads, and a separate one for International threads.
There should be a geeklist for normal giveaway threads, and one for threads with special rules (Mystery Box, Card Game, Chosen One, Share the Love, etc)
There should be a US-only geeklist, a Special Rules geeklist, and an international geeklist for the rest.

What about doing it month by month similar to the Games for Geekgold lotteries? Then when you post something you just need to make sure it ends within that month.

Did you use First Class Mail International to post At the Gates to Scotland? A two pound package to the UK via FCMI costs $17.64. At the Gates can't weigh even that much. A one pound package to the UK via FCMI is $10.76. Sounds like you overpaid!

For me to ship an 18 lb box to the US would cost a small fortune too ($46.01+13% tax, so pretty much the same as it cost you to send), but in a chain of generosity that wouldn't matter to me, because I'd be doing something out of generosity.

Sounds like you're a generous fellow also.....

I just checked my receipt and it was $24.94 via first class international. The box is heavier than we thought weighing in at 3lbs 1oz.

For any Australian gamers reading this discussion (and who don't already know), there are two Aussie only chains:

Australian Chain of Generosity

Australian Card Game Chain of Generosity

The pool of BGG users in Australia is much smaller than in the USA (for example) so 2 chains is probably where it will stay for a while.

The problem with the current format is that every chain runs on a different schedule and different length of time, to the point where it's possible to have active-open chains spread across up to 3 pages... it's impossible to tell what's open without going through the last 3-4 pages and reading every single item.

With separate lists, it's simple. Only the last item is active, that's all.

Plus for rules/regions, you can clearly indicate that at the top once, and avoid endless repetition. If there's an exception, it can be stated in the entry.

US-only and then "international" is terribly self-centered and short sighted. The majority of "US only" chains offer a Canadian option, but Canada would be lumped in with Australia, Germany and Peru... who have nothing to do with each other as well.
If you want geographical lists, go by continent, not "US and Everyone Else"

Definitely set up a master geeklist that links out to all the sublists. This keeps the "single subscription" option in place and a single point of entry for new participants.

Since my offering for the Original Chain garnered a bit of interest for Martinique, thats what my offering will be here.

Like New--Punched out (gently), all components present and in excellent condition

Free shipping to the continental U.S., but I'll cover the first $12 internationally.

I will draw for this on Saturday, Nov. 27th using random.org.

The Mystery Box Chain

thanks to grafpoo for putting up the last box. i have just received it and wanted to announce the next offering.

WARNING:
This is for residents of U.S. only. Why? Because everyone winning this chain will get a PRIORITY MAIL FLAT RATE BOX (though it has become the LARGE FLAT RATE BOX, and now a even larger box it seems as of late) stuffed full of games and/or gaming accessories and/or other stuff.

RULES:
1. The giver must put more than one game into the box.

2. The giver is also required to give one hint concerning one game in the box.

3. GM me with your guess as to what game I am hinting at. If you are correct, you will receive one extra entry in the drawing.

4. If you win, you are expected to post the contents of your box in the following geeklist: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/34124

The Hint:
build up your influence via corrupt politicians, illegal activities and business investments. negotiate or simply send out your hit-men to do the job.

Extras:
i will include at least another handful of games along with some interesting items. fyi, nothing i offer will be in my collection, so don't bother checking.

Deadline:
i'll keep this open until Sunday 11/28 and send it out after the holidays.

Winner:
the dice says Hibikitour is the the next recipient of the mystery box.

Big thanks to Nightglider1 for offering up Space Hulk: Death Angel and Forbidden Island -- both of those coops are ones that I've been interested in trying out, and I'll finally get to give them a shot.

I'm not entirely sure what to offer up to the Chosen One, but since both of the last offerings were directly from his wishlist and passed over, I thought I'd explore a bit to see if something like this might attract attention instead.

This copy has been played a few times, but is in excellent condition. As a small sweetener, I've got a set of nice plastic money tokens that were scavenged from a copy of Harry Potter: Diagon Alley Board Game that make a great pimping addition for this game. I can include those if the recipient is interested.

A winner will be chosen by random.org on Sunday November 28th after 9:00 PM Central Time if this has not been chosen.

While there are no mandatory minimums, players are especially encouraged to make offers that truly meet the original guideline "The game you post should be one that most of the BGG community might want to have." Hopefully by offering the chance at an additional privilege, this chain will be self correcting, and not depend on a few especially generous individuals as some have.

for his generosity.

I hope that I can entice someone on the following, even if it is just one person who would win three choices.

The runner up will pick a game off the list, and the winner will pick 2 of the others

A) The Settlers of Catan: Travel Edition
B) Go Wooden Board
C) Path Of Pharaohs PnP edition
D) Battle of Honey Springs PnP Edition
E) 8 (100pk) Mayday Games card sleeves - Euro Sized 59mm x 92mm

I do a lot of PnP games and these were finished this year.
Pictures for Path of Pharaoh are here:

Shipping is free.

The Chain of Generosity and its dozen-or-so giveaway chains are being moved to separate threads, to ease organization and give the list a revitalization that it desperately needs. When the new Share the Love chain item debuts, it should do so here:

http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/61869/bgg-chain-of-generos...

Please have the new poster create their Geeklist Item for the next Share The Love item here. Also, please have them link this item to both the old Chain of Generosity geeklist, and the new Master List here:

http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/61847/the-boardgamegeek-ch...

If you have any questions at all, contact me, and thanks for Sharing the Love!

The Mystery Box Chain

Thanks to hugz313 for putting up the last box. I am jumping on this with the QUICKNESS! Hence the Mystery Express! P.s. This is not actually the Mystery Express.

The Hint:
Only 4 people own this game on the geek. Surely, you can figure out which one I am talking about unless you are preoccupied with something or someone specific.

Extras:
I am the KING of ramen. I have sent ramen in many of my shipments and this will also include a selection of delightful ramen from around the world.

Deadline:
I'll keep this open until Friday 12/10. I will then try and have it out as soon as possible. I'd like to see this get another go before the new year!

We have a winner!

You can select the original Mystery Box which I have sitting in the other room. You can also opt instead to take Mystery Box #2 or the Mystery Envelope. Tick tock tock!

Hey J.L., last time I was in LA, my friends took me to two amazing ramen restaurant b/c they know I love noodles. If you want to try good authentic Japanese ramen, here are the websites for them.

http://www.dkramen.com/
http://www.santouka.co.jp/shoplist/index.html

The first one is a very busy restaurant and therefore cost a little more. The latter is in the food court of a Japanese Supermarket called Mitsuwa in Santa Monica and hence cheaper. If you like pork, try the Shio Ramen with Special Pork ... ... I always go for the extra large bowl. Real ramen sometimes can be salty, so I would ask for a cup of hot water in case you want less sodium. Let me know if you ever try it and how it turned out.

Btw, in case you want more info on them, they're both on Yelp!

Yeah, sorry, I've been too busy eating the ramen to take pictures of it. It's fantastic, thanks so much for sending it on. One of the best things is that my kids don't like it ("too spicy") which means that I get it all!

I'm excited to give Egomania a try, too. The blurb sounds like just the kind of game that I'd enjoy.

I'll post a list of everything once I get back from vacation, just after New Year's Day.

Best wishes, and thanks!

Unless there is some terrible objection, I would like to put off listing a new item until January. Firstly, I have no idea what I'm going to list, and secondly, I won't be able to ship it until January anyway, most likely, as by the time the item ended, I would be home for two weeks, with no access to my games collection....

Its that time of year for a lite fun family game. What a better way to spend the holidays then fighting over an estate worth millions.

This may not be the best rated games game, but it is pretty good light family fair. This is for a new unplayed copy

OK little interest here, lets sweeten the offer
addtional I add a copy of Reiner Knizia's Spy

In good shape, Simply Fun version

Free shipping to the continental U.S., but I'll cover the first $12 internationally.

I will draw for this on December 18th using random.org.

Big Important News

Ladies and gentlemen,

The big change commences. We are now starting to move our Chain of Generosity Geeklist into separate geeklist threads for each chain. They will all be linked together by the Master List here. I need the following to happen:

Any chain items from here out will be carried out in their own geeklists and linked to the master list. I will put together a Wiki page with a comprehensive list of chain geeklists. I will also ask that anyone who's currently the giver of a chain go to the appropriate geeklist and duplicate the entry they have here by linking to their current offer from there.

If you are preparing a new entry for the Chain of Generosity, please put the new entry in the appropriate geeklist chain and link here as appropriate.

Also, can I get a list of the stalled chains and where they're stalled at? Bob Menzel is already working on reviving the Grognard Chain.

You have to go there to comment and enter, I'm not planning on checking here.

I really like the idea of this list, but I think people need to be a little more generous in this chain of generosity. I'd love to jump on board but so far it seems the entries are a bit sub par.

Now that it's all split up it's not nearly as good. Traffic low, time between new offers longer, generosity slowing down...

It's too bad.

You wouldn't worry half as much about what other people thought of you if you realized how rarely they actually did.

The entries have been pretty weak for as long as I've been following the chains. I have yet to see a game that I'd be more interested in than the microbadge you get for participating.

You must not realize that these aren't about what you want, but about what people are ABLE to give.

I follow the specific chains that i am interested in, but I have to admit that things are very slow or appear dead. For as long as I have been involved in these chains and now the RPGG chains as well, no one in their right mind is going to put their name in the hat for a game that they have no interest in.

That might be part of the problem. The caliber of games being offered lately is lesser than it has been in the past. I know what these chains are about, but if you offer something no one is interested, why would they put their name in for it.

The speed at which these chains are moving is rather weak. I am a firm believer that once you have been notified that you're a winner you should post the next link in the chain within 48 hours. That way it keeps people moving forward and keeps up the interest level and activity of the chains themselves.
