Discussion Thread is Here!

The original Chain of Generosity is here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/23326/ This list is a continuation.

The Chain has been, and continues to be, an enormous success. Thank you to all the people who've kept it going for over two years!

Boardgamegeek is a wonderful place. The friendly, helpful, generous users here make this one of the best online communities. I want to contribute to that spirit, so I have created the BGG Chain of Generosity.

Here's how the BGG Chain of Generosity (The Chain) works:

Step 1: I will seed the list with a giveaway game. Anyone who wants that game can leave a comment to that effect. After 2 days (on Friday) I will randomly choose (using the random integer generator at random.org) a recipient for the game, and geekmail them to set up shipping to their house.

Step 2: The recipient of the game will then choose a game from their collection (probably from their trade list) and post it as an item here for more people (or maybe the same people) to comment on and enter. After about 2 days (this can vary) they will do a drawing, and a that person will win the game.

Step 3: The new recipient repeats step 2.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

RULES:

1. You must comment to the item in question indicating you wish to be in the drawing to recieve it in order to be eligible to win.

2. If you win one, you MUST post a game of your own to give away in this fashion. If you don't like that idea, don't play.

3. In the unlikely event that no offers are made on your game by 48 hours after posting, try a different game in its place.

4. If you wish to start a second (or third, or fourth) chain, post an item to the geeklist and put "SEED" in bold in the description. For those later in the chain, identify which chain your game belongs to.

5. Sender pays shipping, unless he indicates in his entry that the recipient will and under what grounds (International shipping, etc). Anyone signing up to receive an item where recipient pays shipping agree to do so.

Pretty simple rules, eh?

Other Considerations:

The game you post should be one that most of the BGG community might want to have. Ideally, one on your trade list. The dual-purpose of this list is to spread goodwill and give unliked games a good home.

You can win multiple times. Just keep in mind each time you win a game you'll be giving another one away.

Here is my contribution.

Like new Cranium. Found for a song at a local thrift store. Paid $.50 for this UNPLAYED copy. The pencils are unopened, the bits are unopened. In fact only 2 of the 8 packs of cards have been opened. I will admit to opening the clay to see if it was good. It is. (I poked it with my fingers). Everything is there.

I am also adding, in the spirit of generosity, a players copy of AH 1977 edition of Gettysburg. UPDATE: I am adding my copy of High Society.

Oh, lets end this on 7/31.

New Chain!!

Card Game Only Chain!!
The concept here is to stick with card games, especially those that we can fit into a nice small padded envelope (so shipping should be cheap.)

Gloom - The tuck-box fell apart on one side and required some tape. The cards are still in great shape...only played once.

I will draw for this game on Monday, August 4th.

WOW! A lot of interest in my newly-started chain! Time to go to random.org for a random number between 1 and 16:

unixrevolution – 1
r0xjo0 – 2
Teriyaki Donuts – 3
subhan – 4
richtoosoon – 5
jjacjackson – 6
kingmaker fan – 7
Deadguy – 8
starwarsgolfer – 9
artfuldodge2 – 10
abrannan – 11
Peepser – 12
kensheffield – 13
flakybiscuit – 14
IndianaJohn – 15
justscott - 16

And amazingly enough...unixrevolution wins! Trade Request being sent...I'm sure you'll see another Card Game up real soon.

ORIGINAL CHAIN

Used a couple of times, but still nice and shiny -- comes complete with everything it originally came with.

One recently sold for over $100 on EBay:
http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?type=4&cam...

Okay, so I know that is not typical, but $30-40 is. Right now prices are lower, because the market was flooded with them after the $100 sale.

Maybe not desirable if you don't have BattleLore. But it is out of print and highly sought after if you do.

Good Luck!

P.S. A winner will be chosen on 8/8/08 by rolling 8 BattleLore dice to see who gets the most Lore

Okay...it's 3:21 PM Pacific Time, I've got my dice tower out and I'm gonna start rolling...I will update this for each roll just in case someone is watching live--I know you probably are not, but I think it's exciting anyway....

Shrinkwrapped and unopened. I'm also tossing in a poster, trading cards, Burger King action figure, and some figure in a box with Japanese writing on it. They're all shrinkwrapped, which means it's a perfect gift for your raving DBZ-intoxicated nephew except that the box is pink. (So give it to your DBZ-intoxicated niece I suppose.)

Oh, and the game isn't too bad, either. laugh

(Yeah, I'll put up a different game in a few days if there's no response...)

EDIT: Tossing in a VCR tape of Trigun eps 11-13 and any other titles suitable for violent older preteens...

EDIT EDIT: Also tossing in a Slayers light novel and some girly manga you can hide the manly stuff behind.

EDIT EDIT EDIT: Will put up another game early next week.

GROUCH CHAIN

This game is complete, though the original payout cards which specify the merger amounts have been replaced with Xerox copies. I have checked and all tiles are present and there are 25 of each stock certificate.

The box shows just a little wear, with the corners all sound and very little shelf wear on the bottom.

The rules are copyrighted 1976. This is the AH version, and there is no mention of 3M on the box or rules.

Lets draw this on Friday.

I am leaving this Saturday for vacation which will include GenCon. If perchance the winner is going, I could give it to you then. If not, shipping will likely have to wait until I return.

The winner was chosen using the start rules for Acquire.

flowerkin 12-H
kimapesan 5-I
jeremiah lee 4-A
dujo 3-H
pdclose 6-B
flakybiscuit 12-A
kingmaker fan 11-H
forbiddendonuts 10-G

So the winner is DUJO. Again, i will be leaving in a few short hours for vacation so i will have to mail after i return.

CHEAP CHAIN

One professionally printed copy (with tuckbox) of Zombie in my Pocket, all of it on 110# cards. This is a quility set, cardbacks and tilebacks are nice, the tuckbox is nice, it's all nice. Note that this is the solo game, not the 1-8 player Cambridge Games Factory version (due out in late 2008, early 2009).

One copy of Space, Trash, Politicians, printed on cardstock. It'll be in black ink only (there's no color in the game yet anyway). Some cutting might be required.

Special bonus:
If can get it done in time (and I think I can), you'll get a playtest copy of Allegiant, my newest creation. It's a negotiation game sharing some of the feeling of Intrigue, Diplomacy, and I'm The Boss.

I'll randomly decide the winner on Wednesday (8/13/08).

EDIT: Allegiant will be ready.

New Grouch Chain Item

Wow, winner in my very first time up. I'm looking forward to when Jeff gets back from vacation. In the mean time, I will go ahead and presume on faith that he will follow through and I will present the next item in the Grouch Chain in order to keep things moving. This item will close on Thursday, August 14 at 11:59 pm (bgg time). Your item comment requesting inclusion in this lottery must be datestamped before 11:59 pm (bgg time) or it will not count.

So, I'm actually relatively new to bgg and boardgaming, so I don't have a lot of used games that I'm looking to get rid of. Therefore, I will present a brand-spanking new copy of Race for the Galaxy up for the next item in the Grouch Chain. This is the base game only. No presumptions about the upcoming expansion.

This item is as yet unordered. When the winner is determined and I receive the mailing info for the winner, I will order the game online and have it shipped directly to the winner. Notice that I am assuming that I will be able to find a copy somewhere at that time. I don't really see too big of a problem with that since it has just been restocked most everywhere and I don't think the well will dry up in the next 4 days or so, but you never know. If that does occur, the winner and I will definitely work something out with some other new game.

For future winners, I'm not trying to place any new limitations on what is acceptable to pass in the Grouch Chain. So please note that I'm not aware of any requirement that a passed game must either be used or new or of a certain value and my item is not an attempt to include such a restriction. Pass what you like. Enjoy!!!

Thanks Jeff for the game! And thanks Erik for the chain geeklist.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Edit #1: Jeez, I knew this game was popular, but wow. Well, glad I could provide the list with a little bit of extra excitement. I rather enjoy the idea as well. At any rate, yes I have noticed that there are now more than 25 responses and the comments have reached the point where they collapse. Rest assured that everybody hanging off the end of the cliff will be counted as well. You will have an equal opportunity. Good luck to all!

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Edit #2: And the winner is ... rocketkiwi!

The winner was selected by random.org this morning when I got in to work. Sorry if you didn't win, but keep trying, the odds are really pretty good when you're one of (usually) less than 40 entries. Thanks to all who showed an interest and I'm glad I had the opportunity to provide a game that generated a fair bit of excitement. It was probably even more fun to give a game away than it was to receive one. I hope Dom enjoys his game and the next recipient enjoys his or her game and on down the line. I had fun just being a part of the chain. I'm sure I'll enjoy my game when it arrives too. Thanks again Jeff.

CHEAP CHAIN

WOW! I can't believe I was picked on my first posting to this list. Thanks to Jeremiah.

I don't know if this fits in with the theme of the "Cheap Chain", but I will give it a shot. I am putting up a copy of Dracula published by Rio Grande Games. It has been played a few times, but it is complete and all the parts are still in good shape.

I will pick a name this coming Monday (8/18)

(Edit)
I'm sorry I wasn't able to pick a recipient last night. Had a unavoidable family matter come up. I will pick somebody when I get home from work tonight. Again, I am sorry for the delay.

(Edit)
O.K., no more delays. Here is the list of 11 folks looking to add this fine game to there collection:

1-aksosa
2-Erik Warnes
3-Jeff Cramer
4-Bill Andel
5-Sean Carrick
6-jonathan MONTY crummett
7-Space Monster
8-David Dawn
9-Robin Spanell
10-Cedric Chin
11-Stephen Brakman

I will roll a d12 to determine the outcome. If I roll a 12, I will re-roll.

It's luck number 5-Sean Carrick.

Sean, drop me a geekmail with your shipping info and I will get this right out to you. A big thank you to every one else for playing.

SEED - Mystery Box Chain

Alright, this is for residents of U.S. only. Why? Because everyone in this chain is going to get a FLAT RATE PRIORITY MAIL BOX stuffed full of games and/or gaming accessories and/or other stuff. There are only 2 rules:

1. You must put more than one game into the box.

2. You are also required to give one hint concerning one game in the box.

Here is my hint:

The Sombrero pastures
Had one of these versus
The people family who have something in common
With the guy who might have said:
"I'm a doctor, Jim, not a boardgameeek"
OH!!!!

If you win, post what you got in the box and start the next one.

I hope everyone likes surprises.

Winner will be chosen by some random method on Wednesday August 20th around noon.

Note: I removed the mystery games from my collection, so you won't find the answer to the hint by looking there.

List of Participants:

New Grouch Chain Item

First time I try for an item, and I get it. Who would have thought?

A starter set of Richard Garfield's cyberpunk CCG. It's out of print. It's like new - the starter was unwrapped, but the cards have never been played with. Many here on BGG have commented that all you need to play this is a starter set, and some even prefer it that way!

This item will close at 23:59:59 EDT (22:59:59 BGG time) on August 19th, 2008. All users posting comments indicating an interest in receiving the item at or before that time will be eligible.

The winner (as determined by random.org) is lucky number 7 (kimapesan).

Congratulations.

SEED: PAN-EURO-CHAIN - STOPPED
Spreading Generosity around Europe

Ok guys, I love the idea of the generosity chain. However, so far I have only seen it run around America. Thus the idea for a new chain to give all the European geeks the chance for some generosity without a too large posting fee.

EDIT: After anglotiger's good suggestion of moving the Seed to a seperate GL, I stop the PAN-EURO-CHAIN in this GL and moved it to

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/34018

Hopefully, we can attract further Europeans to the BGG generosity!

Greetings

Card Game Only Chain!!

The concept here is to stick with card games, especially those that we can fit into a nice small padded envelope (so shipping should be cheap.)

Played twice--now it can be yours!
I'll randomly pick a winner on the 26th.

Okay, visiting Random.org for the first time was fun. I decided to flip a Chinese 150 Yuan - Year of the Dragon coin for each person...if you got the “wall” side then you’d hit a brick wall and you’re out, if you got a “dragon” you moved on to the next round. I also decided to give those that thumbed the game entry and extra entry into the contest. This is how it went:

CHEAP CHAIN

Wow, I won. Awesome. Well, I hope this is a decent offering.

First up is Ultra Vilelence, a cool little tile laying dungeon crawl. This will be for both modules.

Also, I'll throw in
Ivanhoë

A neat little game after a couple of tweaks.

And since I'm in such a spirit of giving, I'll throw in

Lord of the Rings: The Search.

You play hobbits. Tile laying hobbits. And there's a volcano that randomly jumps around. It's a very special volcano.

It's a very special game.

And it, along with the others, could be yours for the fabulous price of free.

I'll decide the winner randomly (unless you want to bribe me) on Sunday, August 24 sometime in the evening.

* AND THE WINNER IS: (As determined by d6)

1. robin goblin (noddingoff)
2. Erik Warnes (unixrevolution)
3. David Dawn (kingmaker fan)
4. Rob McMonigal (trebro)
5. Michael (Vryolakas)
6. Gene (Germarish)

Congratulations, David Dawn. Just gm me your address and it will be on it's way.

Mystery Box Chain

Alright, here is the newest Mystery Box offering.

Remember, this is for residents of U.S. only. Why? Because everyone in this chain is going to get a FLAT RATE PRIORITY MAIL BOX stuffed full of games and/or gaming accessories and/or other stuff.

Rules:

1. You must put more than one game into the box.

2. You are also required to give one hint concerning one game in the box.

3. GM me with your guess as to what the hinted at mystery game is, and if you are right, you get an additional entry.

Hint

Public enemy number one is doing his best to keep you from solving the mystery of this box.

The F.B.I. tried to get the information from him, but didn't have a search warrant.

Game has been removed from my collection, so don't bother looking.

Box will contain some non-game, yet geeky goodies as well as at least two games.

If you win, post what you got in the box and start the next one. I will pick a winner on 08/29/2008 before 4:00 PM CST.

Edit: I received my box in the mail today. To see the contents, check out this geeklist http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/34124

NEW SEED: THE GEEK CHAIN

Before I list the games on this offer, I want to share a tiny tidbit that led to me starting a new chain. I just had an amazing BGG experience: after a well-intentioned thread of mine in a forum pretty quickly degenerated into some strong comments, one user that I'll leave nameless GM'd me to not only apologize for some of the comments others had made, but to also get my address to send me a box of games in order to, quote, "restore my faith in humanity." I am totally floored that someone would do this, and in order to try to pay that forward, I'm putting up all of the games on my (admittedly fairly meager) trade list as a chain of their own, so someone else can get the joy of being given something nice by a stranger.

So, that said, up for offer are:

Chez Geek
Chez Goth
Rage
James Ernest's Totally Renamed Spy Game (Totally Renamed Spy Game edition)
Cheater (as much for laughs as anything: "Roll doubles: it's awesome!" laugh )

Game conditions:

Chez Geek and Chez Goth have been played a few dozen times but cards are in very good shape. Still have the rules, but no boxes (they're kept in Ziploc baggies).

Rage has only been played once and so is in very good shape. The box has some wear, however, as it's one of those cards games whose box is sorta flimsy.

Totally Renamed Spy Game is in good condition, played a couple dozen times but showing little wear. The box, however, is pretty worse-for-wear; it's battered from going through a couple moves and has some peeling art on the back from some poorly thought-out tape.

The Cheater cards are still in a shrink wrap, but have no box since they came in a tin with Slide 5, which is not included.

I will draw a name in one week, so in the evening of Monday, Sept. 1; no better way to celebrate Labor Day then get some new games! (EDIT: The drawing may be Tuesday morning/afternoon; I'm having Labor Day gaming company and I may not get a chance to do the drawing tonight.)

Current entrants:
1. figarojones
2. Damanthia
3. jadzia_dax

We rolled a die with 1-2 for figarojones, 3-4 for Damanthia, and 5-6 for jadzia_dax, and got a five, so the winner is jadzia_dax!

Since there were so few contestants: $.50 GG consolation prize for figarojones and Damanthia!

CHEAP CHAIN

I will put up this fine item, which I would normally consider above the Cheap Chain but since the rules are a scan, I believe it is fitting for the Cheap Chain. And I will include Origins of World War II. Hopefully these are varied enough entries to generate a fair amount of interest.

Due to some drama now ongoing around me (started up after I had entered this one) I will hold this open until around 10:00 AM (my time zone - eastern) on Saturday August 30.

I will use either a random number generator or dice to select the winner, depending on how may entries there are.

Good Luck to you all.

Dave

Edit: I should note that according to the notes on the wrapping for Origins there is minor box damage. I have not opened the wrapping to determine what the damage is and the same notes describe the contents as excellent and complete. I have purchased other items from the person who left the notes and they have been accurate in the past. I originally picked this up because a trading partner had expressed some good comments on it so I was thinking I had good trade bait for them. But, alas, when I went back to look at the comments, their comments were on thrift list as the one who had found it not those commenting on the find!

Edit for pool description and winner selection:

The meager pool (hopefully a reflection of my being way off base on the interest these items would generate rather than my generosity) consists of:

1. inscrutable hahn (eric L)
2. Dujo
3. milandoug (Doug Iverson)
4. subhan (subhan tindall)

Using a green d4 (from my thrifted 39 cent bag o' dice) and as witnessed by my nephew (not a minor) the number 1 was rolled. Therefore,

The Winner Is

inscrutable hahn (eric L)

Congratulations and step up and win your prize son (send me your address)!

I may not have BGG access until late tonight so I likely won't ship until Tuesday.
