Discussion Thread is Here!

The original Chain of Generosity is here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/23326/ This list is a continuation.

The Chain has been, and continues to be, an enormous success. Thank you to all the people who've kept it going for over two years!

Boardgamegeek is a wonderful place. The friendly, helpful, generous users here make this one of the best online communities. I want to contribute to that spirit, so I have created the BGG Chain of Generosity.

Here's how the BGG Chain of Generosity (The Chain) works:

Step 1: I will seed the list with a giveaway game. Anyone who wants that game can leave a comment to that effect. After 2 days (on Friday) I will randomly choose (using the random integer generator at random.org) a recipient for the game, and geekmail them to set up shipping to their house.

Step 2: The recipient of the game will then choose a game from their collection (probably from their trade list) and post it as an item here for more people (or maybe the same people) to comment on and enter. After about 2 days (this can vary) they will do a drawing, and a that person will win the game.

Step 3: The new recipient repeats step 2.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

RULES:

1. You must comment to the item in question indicating you wish to be in the drawing to recieve it in order to be eligible to win.

2. If you win one, you MUST post a game of your own to give away in this fashion. If you don't like that idea, don't play.

3. In the unlikely event that no offers are made on your game by 48 hours after posting, try a different game in its place.

4. If you wish to start a second (or third, or fourth) chain, post an item to the geeklist and put "SEED" in bold in the description. For those later in the chain, identify which chain your game belongs to.

5. Sender pays shipping, unless he indicates in his entry that the recipient will and under what grounds (International shipping, etc). Anyone signing up to receive an item where recipient pays shipping agree to do so.

Pretty simple rules, eh?

Other Considerations:

The game you post should be one that most of the BGG community might want to have. Ideally, one on your trade list. The dual-purpose of this list is to spread goodwill and give unliked games a good home.

You can win multiple times. Just keep in mind each time you win a game you'll be giving another one away.

ORIGINAL CHAIN

This offering is limited to North America, I'm afraid. I expect the box to be a bit unwieldy in shape and thus too expensive to ship abroad.

Thanks very much to Daddys_Home for picking me, and for good-naturedly allowing me to put the image of my new Epic Outdoor Survival idea in his item comments. Of course, he did change his heading to make sure that my picture was a non sequitur . . .shake

Anyway, for my turn, I'm offering up a couple bits of classic fun. First, Sharp Shooters, a lovely bit of push your luck goodness. This copy is unpunched, although the edges of the box are a bit scuffed and rubbed. That's right, you get to unwrap the BLOCK o' DICE and put the stickers on as carefully as you desire.

To this, I will add a Milton Bradley copy of the 1983 SdJ winner, Scotland Yard.

This copy IS played, but because I like you sooooo much, I will give you my nicest copy. In fact, I will go through the box searching for subpar components and replacing them before I send the game out.

I'll determine a random winner on Friday, January 16.

EDIT: I asked the ACTS 3-sided die roller to pick me a winner, and it came up number one. I'm sending a message to Surfindecoy.

Thank you Lance! Now I guess that it's my turn.

HOT OR NOT NISB CHAIN!!!

Here are the new standardized rules, as copied from Lance's offering above:

1. The game offered must be unplayed and still in shrink. Alternatively you can offer a game that may be out of its shrink wrap, but still unplayed and unpunched.

2. The game offered has 48 business hours to get at least 6 thumbs. If it does not get 6 thumbs then the person who offered the game must add something to the mix. If you are forced to add something to sweeten the pot, it does not have to be another NISB game, it can be anything - GeekGold, dice, a DVD, anything at all. This must be done every 24 business hours until the offering gets 6 thumbs.

3. If the NISB game offered should get 12 thumbs before 48 business hours have gone by, the person offering the game can close their offer and draw at that time. This is to prevent people from holding out for sweeteners and giving the offer a sense of urgency. If you wait too long, you might miss out!

4. The Chain will continue until I win another game, meaning it will be a "closed chain" of generosity. However, I have several NISB games I plan on offering, so I hope to keep this going for some time, as long as interest continues.

5. Remember, if you want to throw your name into the hat, you have to give the geeklist entry a thumbs up. Responses of "I'm in!" and the like will NOT put you in the running for the game.

Now, to my entry...

I like to think of this as a fluid sort of event, so I'm following suit by offering a choice and I'm adding in a little sweetener right away to your options - I'm not even waiting for the six thumbs - I'm just that nice a guy:

Choice # 1

Blokus 3D - New in shrinkwrap, per the rules.

Plus, an instant sweetener:

Lord of the Fries - Excellent condition.

or...

Choice # 2

Guillotine - New in shrinkwrap.

Plus, an instant sweetener:

Mille Bornes - Box has a minor compression ding in one corner, cards are like new.

or...

Choice # 3

Oasis - New in shrinkwrap. Actually coming to me in a recent math trade, but I should have it in hand by Tuesday.

Plus, an instant sweetener:

Slamwich - An old, well played copy I had lying around which I had forgotten all about. Perhaps someone else can give it some love.

Remember - you need to THUMB this entry to be considered in on the drawing...

Your 48 business hours start... wait for it, wait for it... now!

01/10/09 - 7:23pm central time.

01/13/09 - 8:00pm - OK we capped at 6 thumbs. I was going to think of some clever way to pick a winner, possibly involving my cat, but with six it seems silly to do anything other than roll a die...

So the order is:

1. artfuldodge2
2. coasterb
3. djjuras
4. kimapesan
5. UndeadViking
6. personwholives

Drum roll please..........

And the die rolls.........

And stops on a....... 6!

(I can never roll a bloody 6 when I really need one...!)

personwholives

Congratulations Kendall. There will be a GM coming shortly...

So, I went through my games closet, looking for some options to give away, and here is what I've come up with. You have a choice:

1. Monsters Menace America (Brand new, as per rules)

2. Acronymity (new) with 2nd Guess (gently used) (AKA the party games pack) (I know a lot af people put down the party games around here, but maybe you like them.)

3. 4 decks of Battleground: Fantasy Warfare (new) (Dwarves starter, High elf starter, Men of Hawkshold starter and reinforcements)

Alas, that is the limit of my new in shrink collection.... Maybe I shouldn't open my games until I'm ready to play them if I'll be in this chain a lot.

Time begins 07:45 pacific on Thursday, so expect a drawing Tuesday (or sooner), as Monday is a holiday (for me at least).

And random.org says 6. Congrats edosan, enjoy. Geekmail on the way.

This is a still in shrink version of the 3W game. Found it at a garage sale. From the reviews it is a pretty good game of the Battle of the Coral Sea. I am just not really into WWII naval battles.

Will be taking entries until Sunday, February 10, 10:00 pm, CST.

Drawing will be held shortly thereafter.

I am sorry it has taken me so long to get back to this chain. I had some family issues.

That's right, it's the D&D Adventure Game, released BEFORE 3.0 came out. I'm also tossing in a set of bland newbie dice, including an ugly vinyl bag from Dragon Dice. Tokens on thin cardsheet galore!

But wait! There's less! All of these "What's Vista?" computer games in a flat rate box!

* The Sims 1: Complete collection, including all expanions
* Age of Empires II
* Diablo, plus the Hellwhatever expansion set
* Warcraft II, plus expansion set and disk of additional levels
* KISS: Psycho Circus

ORIGINAL CHAIN

My thanks to Tim. (That name makes me smile, makes me think of Cleese's enchanter in the Holy Grail.) Of course now my chances at the Consolation Chain are no more.

I offer up Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game. Sadly the zombies must have been trying to escape as the box top has one split corner and a small dent on an edge. Luckily they did not harm the contents. The game is in good condition and complete. In fact the advanced Hero and Zombie cards are still in their wrappers.

I wanted to add something to this, but I'm drawing a blank. I've got an otherwise more than complete copy of Zombies!!! I'd be happy to include - 'more than complete' because it has 80 cards instead of 50, pluse extra zombies - 'otherwise' because it has no game board squares. Really it's perfect for that Lego Zombies!!! you've been dieing to make. Oh forget it.

Hopefully the Users Wanting to Users Trading ratio means this will find a nice home.

A winner will be selected at the end of Tuesday the 27th.

Hooray! BGG is back up. Now maybe the Original Chain can get back on track. Give it up for kingarthur1976 and his generosity. Turns out he was given the game just days before the drawing. And he chose to have a new name drawn. Very generous.

So with the above list now dropped to 12 a simple D12 roll yields a '2'. And the new winner is

personwholives

Time for the new link of the...

HOT OR NOT NISB CHAIN!!!

Offer void where prohibited by law. The Hot or Not Chain may cause excitement, anticipation, "restless leg syndrome," and general antsyness. Consult you doctor to see if the Hot or Not Chain is right for you...oh, heck, it is.

After looking through my trade pile, I'm offering up Rumis as one of the few games on my trade pile that I haven't torn the shrinkwrap off in search of that elusive "new game smell." This offer is especially cool since you can get this game without the cheese-tastic "Blokus 3D" packaging. I will try to add a fun and non-game related surprise to it as well.

Thumb this post if you want it...

EDIT: Well, it's been a while and Rumis seems to be clocking in at "not hot." So let's add something...

EDIT #2: Hmmm...slightly hotter but still not there. More additions following

In addition to Rumis, you can also get your choice of TWO of the following...

A) A ziplock bag of Pirates of the Spanish Main

(Astute "Chain of Generosity" readers will note that this was previously offered in the Geek Chain.)

OR

B) Shuttles

(There is a puncture/rip on the bottom of the box but it's not very big)

OR

C) Liar's Dice

This version (box not included, but it comes in a nifty drawstring bag):

OR

D) Ticket to Ride: The Card Game

Like new - played once.

Disclaimer: none of the three above games are NISB.

To misquote Henny Youngman: "take my game, please!"

EDIT #3 @ 10:30 pm Mountain Time: Six! Let's do this thing! If only I had a way to randomly generate a number from one to six. Oh, wait...

(rolls) ...and the winner is...Progmode! Email forthcoming! Thanks for participating, everybody!

Mystery Box Chain!

Here is the new entry in the Mystery Box Chain!

Alright, this is for residents of U.S. only. Why? Because everyone in this chain is going to get a FLAT RATE PRIORITY MAIL BOX stuffed full of games and/or gaming accessories and/or other stuff. There are only 2 rules:

1. You must put more than one game into the box.

2. You are also required to give one hint concerning one game in the box. Those who guess the hint get a second entry.

If you win, post what you got in the box and start the next one.

My hint: This is going to be one hot ride, so strap in once you're aboard!

The winner will be determined via random number generator on Saturday, January 31st.

Don't forget to post what you get to this geeklist: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/34124

UPDATE: atimrogers has guessed the hint. You can still send me a guess all the way up till Saturday.

atimrogers gets a second entry at #12, so I'm doing a random number between 1 and 12. The result is: 9

Well, the time has come for the next item in this chain. I choose Diplomacy. This is the latest 50th anniversary edition with 315 playing pieces. The back of the box seems to think that's a big deal.

The Hot or Not NISB Chain may cause drowsiness. Do not operate heavy machinery while thumbing The Hot or Not NISB Chain. Progmode is not responsible for broken families and friendships caused by receiving this Hot or Not NISB Chain item.

The Hot or Not NISB Chain - the once-a-thumb chain for natural board game collection enhancement.

UPDATE 01/30:
Huh. Not quite hot enough, eh? Well then, in addition to Diplomacy, you can get your hands on a shiny new-in-shrink copy of Double or Nothing!

UPDATE 01/31:
Alright you guys. Lets see how you feel about 15! Enough to get your very own Microbadge!

UPDATE 02/03:
We have 6 thumbs! And the winner according to random.org is...

It's the GEEK CHAIN!

I thought I'd be thematic and give away Pizza box Football, because well, there's something going on with football this weekend or so I am told. There is some tape on the box, but everything is in good shape.

If you don't like football and want something else, here is an alternate offering:

Tongiaki -- this is the German version but has a copy of the rules in English included.

If you don't like either football or sailing off in a dugout canoe to your certain doom, the third choice is this:

Carcassonne: the Discovery (for those of you that wish they won it last time around).

So to sum up: you get your pick of Pizza Box Football, Tongiaki, or Carc: the Discovery.

I'm putting this one up on 9pm Mountain time of Friday, so let's give it a full week: winner drawn next Friday night, 2/6.

UPDATE: Okay I didn't draw last night (I was gaming) so let's to this thing...winner is unixrevolution! Sending off the email!

Card Game Chain

Blott wrote:
The concept here is to stick with card games, especially those that we can fit into a nice small padded envelope (so shipping should be cheap).

A big "thank you" to Aaron for the games he sent. And now, let's offer a couple of my family's favorites, plus one. We start out with Meuterer. The game is an import, so you may have to download the English instructions separately. There's a lot of game in this box, and I think it often gets overlooked. Next up:

    Citadels

This game was nominated for the Spiel des Jahres (SdJ) in 2000, and also finished in 6th place for the Deutscher Spiele Preis (DSP). It's a classic here on the 'Geek, and if you don't have it already, then you should give it a try! The last item on offer is:

              Jambo

I hear this is a great 2-player game. Frankly, I'd like to try it myself one of these days! It's by Rüdiger Dorn, who also designed personal favorites such as Goa, Louis XIV, and most recently Diamonds Club. Nominated for the SdJ in 2005, and finished in 8th place for the DSP.

These three games have been quite popular in the past. Therefore I have one request to make of contest participants: if you already own one or two of these games and still choose to try for the other(s), then please include the duplicate title(s) in the next link of this chain in addition to those games you would have offered anyway. That way we can build up a tidy collection of quality card games for some new collector down the line.

The deadline for contest submissions will be 12:00 AM CST (midnight BGG time) this Sunday, 8 February.

Entries submitted at the deadline minute will count; those time stamped on or after 12:01 AM will not. I will use random.org to generate the winning number from those who enter. Good luck!

Cheap Chain!

No, it's not even the nice wood Quarto! that you can display proudly on your coffee table. It's the black and white plastic version - this IS the cheap chain, after all!

Not only that, I'll toss in my rather obviously used copy of Pirateer...

It's got the goods, the box has just clearly seen better days.

I'll let this run at least until Friday at midnight, but no longer than Monday at midnight. Somewhere in there I'll cut this off and pick a winner.

Edit - We call the winner as personwholives!

ORIGINAL CHAIN

Today's entry in the original chain is a choice of classics. Choose your favorite one form:

1. Facts in Five (Very good condition, appears to be the '67 3M edition) The classic slipcase edition of the game that tests both your breadth and depth of knowledge.

2. Booby-Trap (pretty good condition, appears to be the '65 parker edition) The classic game of dexterity, featuring all wood pieces in a wood frame. Can you remove them without moving the bar?

3. Fire (Extra special edition) A not-quite-as-classic dexterity game. Expect this one to be delayed a bit if you pick it, as a friend of mine and I were planning on hanging out and doing some woodworking in the garage this weekend & next to build a couple copies of this, but it won't be until early the week after when the stain is all dried that it is ready to ship.

So I'm thinking that number three will be the most popular. As for the seemingly poor choices this time, some of the other things I would have offered are on my GeekList auction, so I didn't want to commit to sending them to two different people.

I will close this next Friday (the 13th for people counting), and draw sometime on Saturday. Good luck.

***** Edit: Seems I wasn't terribly clear in my description. My intention was to offer a choice of the above three, not all of them. Sorry if there was any confusion. I have revised it to make that clearer.

Winner!!!
And so the drawing happens, and my trusty d6 says: 3
Congrats subhan, Mail on the way.

My hint(s): If one group of undead start eating LOTS of people going north-eastward from Los Angeles at 20 miles per hour, and a group of ghouls start eating LOTS of people going south-westward from New York City at 40 miles an hour, how long would they have been eating and where would they be when they met, supposing that they were traveling at a constant speed directly at each other, if the distance between them was 14400 miles?

The winner will be determined via some random method on Thursday, February 12th.

Don't forget to post what you get to this geeklist: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/34124

*Just want to take a moment to apologize about taking so long. Inbetween BGG crashing, and real life, I've barely had enough time to get anything done, let alone decide what games I was going to throw in the mystery box.

atimrogers has guessed one of the games.

AND THE WINNER IS...*

ced1106
atimrogers

jgilmour
Angry Duck

atimrogers (for his correct guess)

... You may be wondering how I decided this. Well, I wanted to be fair, and I know some people (*cough*atimrogers*cough*) would stoop so low as to hack Random.org, so I did the only noble thing I could. I sacrificed my first born to a dark overlord, and he bequeathed unto me the knowledge that the most deserving would be Jgilmour. So, if you have any issues, bring it up with him.

HOT OR NOT NISB CHAIN!!!

Here are the new standardized rules, blah, blah, blah:

Alright California was not going so I am going to change this up to Power Grid. while this is not in Shrink Wrap it is unpunched and Brand New. I got it at a Store in their bargain area due to Shrink Wrap being torn almost off. The game is Brand New.

12 people so we will now roll the dice. Roll = 7
Angry Duck | kimapesan | pdclose | Blott | SurfinDecoy | anglotiger | Howitzer_120mm | Jeremiah_Lee | djjuras | hugz313 | HermesCZ | subhan

Howitzer_120mm is the winner. A GM will go out shortly.

I was informed by Howitzer_120mm that he no longer qualifies for this and has asked I choose another winner.

Roll of the random dice server = 4
Blott is the new Winner and will receive a GM.

Cheap Chain

So, I looked around to see what I had worth putting up here, and I settled on this. I have a whole bunch of packs worth of cards for this game and it's expansion, Battle of Titans. So, I will be offering about 10 packs worth of cards (including rares) for this. If you have some special request, let me know. I will include the rules for both packs, and the "extras", the comics, from axis of evil. However, the extra tiny dice are not included, use your own d6s. I mostly got this for the fighters, which make great ships for battlestations.

Sign up for the drawing throughout this week, I'll draw on Saturday. If no one volunteers by Wednesday, I'll look for something else to post.

And there were no volunteers. So, now you get a choice of Rocketmen: Axis of Evil + Save Doctor Lucky (boxed edition) (new), a game which fits the spirit of the chain, being from cheapass, the makers of many cheap games OR a brand new copy of Flowers and Fluxx (new), which is basically flux with a special promo card (Flowers, counts as Love or Death) and a few bendy flowers.

Somebody wants it? Post below. Open until Wednesday evening, so act fast. If no takers by then..... I'll find something else, I guess.

Edit:
I give up on going cheap. I have an unopened copy of Blokus, now up for offer. Open until Sunday. Alternatively, the other things are still on the table, so if you want any of them instead, that is a possibility.

Edit:
And for the winner: Vydar. Congratulations, GM on the way.

I know, you're sitting there thinking, "He just won a copy of Power Grid and all he's offering up is this inexpensive card game?" Well, it's the only game I have in shrink at the moment. But if you don't give it the 6 thumbs up in the first 2 days (which, I suspect, you won't) the added extras I can throw in, that are out of shrink, should please everyone

Added Extra #1 = A copy of Pizza Box Football. It's open, and I have played it once. Sadly the game board came warped, but the game is still playable, and a lot of fun. I just don't get much time for 2-player games.

Added Extra #2 = A copy of Pylos. The components are all in great condition, because I only played it twice. The box shows a little shelfwear.
