Discussion Thread is Here!

The original Chain of Generosity is here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/23326/ This list is a continuation.

The Chain has been, and continues to be, an enormous success. Thank you to all the people who've kept it going for over two years!

Boardgamegeek is a wonderful place. The friendly, helpful, generous users here make this one of the best online communities. I want to contribute to that spirit, so I have created the BGG Chain of Generosity.

Here's how the BGG Chain of Generosity (The Chain) works:

Step 1: I will seed the list with a giveaway game. Anyone who wants that game can leave a comment to that effect. After 2 days (on Friday) I will randomly choose (using the random integer generator at random.org) a recipient for the game, and geekmail them to set up shipping to their house.

Step 2: The recipient of the game will then choose a game from their collection (probably from their trade list) and post it as an item here for more people (or maybe the same people) to comment on and enter. After about 2 days (this can vary) they will do a drawing, and a that person will win the game.

Step 3: The new recipient repeats step 2.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

RULES:

1. You must comment to the item in question indicating you wish to be in the drawing to recieve it in order to be eligible to win.

2. If you win one, you MUST post a game of your own to give away in this fashion. If you don't like that idea, don't play.

3. In the unlikely event that no offers are made on your game by 48 hours after posting, try a different game in its place.

4. If you wish to start a second (or third, or fourth) chain, post an item to the geeklist and put "SEED" in bold in the description. For those later in the chain, identify which chain your game belongs to.

5. Sender pays shipping, unless he indicates in his entry that the recipient will and under what grounds (International shipping, etc). Anyone signing up to receive an item where recipient pays shipping agree to do so.

Pretty simple rules, eh?

Other Considerations:

The game you post should be one that most of the BGG community might want to have. Ideally, one on your trade list. The dual-purpose of this list is to spread goodwill and give unliked games a good home.

You can win multiple times. Just keep in mind each time you win a game you'll be giving another one away.

Brand New Entry for Hot or Not!

I offer up Shear Panic!

This is in shrink and waiting for a good home. Yes I have offered this up before in a previous chain. Yes, for some reason I own 3 copies of it. My 20 month old daughter enjoys playing with the pieces even if she does not quite get the game, but you will not be getting the drool covered copy I own, yours will be pristine I swear. here, look at these cute little buggers...how can you not want them?

Now here are the rules - these HAVE changed slightly so please read them. The changed portions have been bolded.

1. The first item offered must be a game that is still in shrink, or at the very most, opened, and sparsely played (if at all) and in "like new" condition.

2. The game offered has 48 business hours to get at least 6 thumbs. If it does not get 6 thumbs then the person who offered the game must add something to the mix. If you are forced to add something to sweeten the pot, it does not have to be another game, it can be anything - GeekGold, dice, a DVD, anything at all. This must be done every 24 business hours until you get 6 thumbs OR 3 items are offered.

3. If the first game offered should get 6 thumbs before 48 business hours have gone by, the person offering the game can close their offer and draw at that time. This is to prevent people from holding out for sweeteners and giving the offer a sense of urgency. If you wait too long, you might miss out!

4. The Chain will continue until UndeadViking wins another game, and wants to end the chain. This means it will be a "closed chain" of generosity. However, UndeadViking has several games he plans on offering, so he hopes to keep this going for some time, as long as interest continues.

5. Remember, if you want to throw your name into the hat, you have to give the geeklist entry a thumbs up. Responses of "I'm in!" and the like will NOT put you in the running for the game

*edit* OOOO!!! People love their sheep. One more thumb and I will be able to close this sucker after 48 hours. Get in while you can people!

*edit#2* Thats 6! 3pm on Mar 25th this one is shutting down - my daughter is already getting excited to draw the name out of the hat. Get in while you can!

*edit#3*OK shutting it down so my daughter Rilyn can draw a name...

Our winner is...

Another New Entry for Hot or Not!

I am offering Cutthroat Caverns (2nd Edition) HOT OF THE PRESS!!!

Well as hot as it can be after spending spending a month on a slow boat from China and another couple weeks on a train in the middle of winter. So maybe not literally hot, but definately hotly anticipated after almost a year of delays.

This is a brand new in shrink copy of the 2nd Edition published just this month. In this semi-cooperative game you must out wit your teammates and hog the glory to come out on top. As the game box says,
Quote:
Without Teamwork, You'll never survive. Without Betrayal, You'll Never Win.

----

Edit 1 - Wow over 48 hours already OK, then I'll throw in the first expansion set

Cutthroat Caverns: Deeper & Darker

Now here are the Hottie or Nottie rules v2.0.1 - these HAVE changed recently so please read them. The changed portions are no longer bolded.

1. The first item offered must be a game that is still in shrink, or at the very most, opened, and sparsely played (if at all) and in "like new" condition.

Responses of "I'm in!" and the like will NOT put you in the running for the game.

Pick Me

This is item number: FOUR in the Pick Me chain.

Here's how the "Pick Me" chain works: I put up an item and if you'd like to get it you have to get me to pick you. You do this by leaving a comment for the item, describing the item(s) you're willing to offer up as next in the chain. It doesn't have to be a game, it just has to be creative and/or cool. I will pick what I think is the coolest item. People can help me decide what's coolest by thumbing the item they like the most. However, I am free to ignore public opinion.

If I pick you, you list your item, and give people some time to leave comments, then you pick what you think is the coolest item from the comments left for your entry in the chain.

This process is repeated 10 times. The 10th item listed is the FINAL item in the chain. The rules for winning the 10th item are special. Leave a comment that is thoughtful, inspiring, witty, or strange indicating why you should get the 10th item. The public will vote on who should get the 10th with their thumbs. Do NOT thumb your own comment. You can only thumb 1 comment. You can change your vote up to the deadline. The person who is listing the 10th item decides any ties.

I plan to pick a lucky winner for Pick Me #4 on (Monday, April 6, 2009)

Here's what you'll win if I pick you:

I will make a wood chip Dominion set similar to the one described in the linked geeklist and pictured below.

Winner will receive their choice of the following chip designs:

Set 1 - Created by Golux
This is the set I recommend and made for myself. I think it's the nicest looking as it includes the background image from the cards. It also includes chips for the Envoy and Black Market Promo cards.

Set 2 - Created by Matthan
These are the easiest to read, and have nice icons to represent card +draws, etc. No extra cards represented.

Set 3 - by arpst0rm
The Zombie themed set. I'm a little reluctant to even offer this one. It's a cool design, but I'm not so sure how they'll look a plain wooden disk, and I'm doubtful that I'll be able to punch them so well that they don't have a slightly uneven white border. Includes an Envoy equivalent.

Fine print:
I will give preference to entries that already own Dominion. I don't want to get into any intellectual property rights debates. If you have a problem with this, please keep it to yourself.
The set will come with chips organized in plastic baggies. No other accessories included (ie. draw bags, chip case etc.)

Please feel free to geekmail me with any questions.

Good luck and thanks for participating!

EDIT:

Thanks to Everyone for participating. It was a hard decision, with so many tempting offers. In the end I decided to go with one that though it wasn't the top thumb recipient, has received lots of thumbs and praise in earlier attempts to win the covetted Pick Me! Chain.

Congratulations Rick Johnston (hornss)! Your offer of fimo Pandemic pawns has won the fourth round of the Pick Me! Chain

Hot or Not Chain

People are getting really fussy over the free games they're willing to take these days...

So let's try this and see if we can manage six thumbs:

- It's got a BGG user rating over 7
- It's got more users wanting than trading by more than 2:1 (117:51)
- It's new in shrink
- It's the second edition (in the blue box - with an extra robot and new, more interesting maps)
- It was purchased from my FLGS this weekend

Remember that you need to thumb this item to be entered!

Rules:

These HAVE changed recently so please read them. The changed portions are no longer bolded.

1. The first item offered must be a game that is still in shrink, or at the very most, opened, and sparsely played (if at all) and in "like new" condition.

Responses of "I'm in!" and the like will NOT put you in the running for the game.

Edited to add the name of the chain at the top of the entry, just to avoid any confusion.

OK - closed for entries...

1 - hornss
2 - SurfinDecoy
3 - Peter Loop
4 - joewycka
5 - personwholives
6 - Beowulf
7 - UndeadViking
8 - ilta

And RANDOM.ORG declares the winner to be...

#7 - UndeadViking (yes, really...)

GEEK CHAIN

Sorry for the delay, but I wanted to see what traded in the Continental Math Trade before listing here. SO! I have an OOP import to offer which sells on Boards and Bits for $56 new at the moment. A game only a true geek would seek!!

This copy is not new, and has bit of box damage on one corner (it is pressed in on the bottom and sides), but the components are in excellent condition. I bought the game ding and dent and only played it once. The game comes with English rules and is language independent.

The houses in this game are large enough to stand in as tents for your Carcassonne meeples! That's gotta count for something.

I will select a geek a week from today, April 9th, by some to-be-determined random method.

Add a comment below if you want to be included. I will not be adding users from the thumb button.

EDIT

Okay, with the double entry from the Close family, we have an even six. I have chosen to roll my giant red d6 from Harolds Casino in Reno. This may be my first real application of this die despite owning it for at least 15 years.

The entries are...

1 - anglotiger
2 - Peter Loop
3 - UndeadViking
4 - Daddys_Home
5 - pdclose
6 - too_close

Excuse me while I roll this monster across the floor.

And the winner is... 2. Peter Loop!

For those of you who participated in the math trade and did not put this game on your lists - you frankly don't deserve this game!!

Thanks for participating, everyone.

New Hot or Not offering!!

I offer up a NEW and IN SHRINK copy of Martin Wallace's

It has a solid rating and it is a pretty good light "euro" card based game. Look at it this way, if you ever wanted to get it and not deal with Mayfair's price fixing policies, here is your chance.

Some decent bits, especially the "gems" you collect for your swords.

As always...

Rules:

This is to prevent people from holding out for sweeteners and giving the offer a sense of urgency. If you wait too long, you might miss out!

----------------------------------------------------------

48 business hours starts now! If I get 6 thumbs over the weekend I will pick a winner. As always, the winner will be chosen by my 20 month old daughter Rilyn by drawing a name out of my beloved Twins hat.

People love their Martin Wallace - I will give this one the rest of the day before Rilyn picks a name.

ORIGINAL CHAIN

I'm offering a brand new, still in shrink copy of Beowulf: The Legend.

With all the great games that Fantasy Flight puts out on shelves, this one sometimes gets overlooked. I personally believe it is underrated and worth trying out. Also, like all Fantasy Flight games, the production value is very high.

I will end this chain on Friday, 4/10/09. Good luck!

New Offering

Well, I felt that Beowulf:The Legend was underrated, but never thought that it would be so unpopular. I guess we'll have to give this chain a slight facelift.

Okay, the new offering is a pair of games that cannot be more opposite. One is a time tested black & white classic that requires deep thought and strategic maneuvering, while the other is a colorful, fast-paced hand eye coordination dexterity game.

Go (great condition, wooden foldable board with magnetic pieces)
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/188

Make 'n' Break Extreme (brand new in original shrinkwrap)
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/30706

I personally believe they are both awesome games in their respective categories. Go gives players a true sense of victory when a well executed plan wins a long hard fought battle. Make 'n' Break Extreme is just simply fun and provides the perfect filler. I hope they will bring someone as much joy as they do for me.

Deadline: I will choose a winner sometime on Tuesday 4/14.

Sad to see that there's only three takers for two great games, but hopefully they're getting a loved home. Anyway, I choose a name out of the hat, and the winner is unixrevolution. Chain passes onto the originator.

HOT or NOT?

Uh oh. Two wins in one week? Can I keep offering up games at this torrid pace? Fortunately, I own a lot of games!

Fish is a great game everyone should own. My fear is that everyone here already owns it. IF you don't, or IF you know of someone for whom this would be a perfect gift, now's your chance to snag it. This copy is brand new and in the shrinkwrap.

Since weekends don't count on the timeline, I'll give this until Tuesday evening to get 6 thumbs. Good Luck!

Rules:

Responses of "I'm in!" and the like will NOT put you in the running for the game.

RESULTS!

Okay, a nice round number perfect for a 12-sided die. The numbers are as follows:

1 - Merkles Boner
2 - UndeadViking
3 - jgilmour
4 - Fierce_FishSJS
5 - SurfinDecoy
6 - karlgaming
7 - hockeyjedi
8 - Progmode
9 - polkerco
10- Damanthia
11- skipster13
12- gdapkus

And the result on my trusty old purple D12 is.... 6!

karlgaming, I pass the torch to you. An email is forthcoming. Thanks all!

Let's Make A Deal!

Have you ever watched Let's Make A Deal? Well, there's a new chain and it goes like this:

You have a choice and all three are games.

You can either choose
Curtain #1 which is:
The Reiner Knizia pack of two games -
Spy

Kingdoms

** OR **
You can choose Curtain #2:

Zombies!!! & Zombies!!! 2: Zombie Corps(e)

** OR **
You can choose Curtain #3:

Warhammer 40,000 Collectible Card Game
Hint: Game of four alien races locked in interstellar warfare in the far distant future.

RULES: You do not need to email me with which one you want. Just say
"I'm in" and which curtain you want, #1, #2 or #3.
I am going to leave this open to everyone, not just the US. No other hints, nothing else to do but win a game and then post one like this or something else a bit more creative. All of the opportunities, the curtains, need to be a game if you do the same type of thing.
All three curtains in this one ARE games.
Edit: It has been suggested to me to include further terms. If you win this chain, please either keep the chain going with at least 2 games and a consolation prize or all three of them games. If you'd like to change the terms and do something else, please make sure there is at least one game and a wild card. This way we can play awhile longer.

Random dice roll says the winner is #2 Lisa Wong (hugz313). gm sent.

Pick Me

This is item number: 5 in the Pick Me chain.

I plan to pick a lucky winner for Pick Me #5 on April 15th!!!!

Here's what you'll win if I pick you:

A custom pandemic set!

Includes Fimo pawns as well as An Atlanta start center!

Please feel free to geekmail me with any questions.

Good luck and thanks for participating!

Wow, I've cycled through. What will we include? What will we include?

WARNING:
This is for residents of U.S. only. Why? Because everyone winning this chain will get a PRIORITY MAIL FLAT RATE BOX (though it has become the LARGE FLAT RATE BOX lately) stuffed full of games and/or gaming accessories and/or other stuff.

RULES:
1. The giver must put more than one game into the box.

2. The giver is also required to give one hint concerning one game in the box.

3. GM me with your guess as to what game I am hinting at. If you are correct, you will receive one extra entry in the drawing.

4. If you win, you are expected to post the contents of your box in the following geeklist: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/34124

The Hint:
This slate is kind of hairy.

The Deadline:
Winner will be randomly chosen on Friday, 4/17.

Cheap Chain

And the Cheap Chain rolls on with a copy of this lovely game. It is in great condition (I only played it once) and I somehow managed to get all the components back in the box (which is no small feat.) The only reason I'm even letting it go is that I seldom get any opportunity for 2 player games and so it just never got to the table.

I'll select a winner at the end of this week and ship out at the beginning of next week!

Edit: Oops! I forgot to draw last week. Well, here goes:

1 - Progmode
2 - gdapkus
3 - Undead Viking

5 - polkeroo

Pick Me

This is item number: 06 in the Pick Me chain.
Since this GL is almost impossible to follow with all the different chains represented, here is a list of the previous offers in this "Pick Me" chain:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/24780/item/912341#item...
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/24780/item/917319#item...

Here's how the "Pick Me" chain works: I put up an item (or lot of items) and if you'd like to get it you have to get me to pick you. You do this by leaving a comment for the item, describing the item(s) you're willing to offer up as next in the chain. It doesn't have to be a game, it just has to be creative and/or cool. I will pick what I think is the coolest item. Acknowledging that "cool-ness" is in the eye of the beholder, you can look at my profile to see what things I might consider cool. People can help me decide what's coolest by thumbing the item they like the most. However, I am free to ignore public opinion since the thumbs process gives a huge unfair advantage to the early offers.

I plan to pick a lucky winner for Pick Me 06 on April 19th at approximately 10:00 p.m. CT.

Here's what you'll win if I pick you:

1. First choose any one of the draw-string bags pictured below that can be used to pull secret tiles. (Technically you could just use the bags to store bits, but that is kinda dull). For a list of games that can especially benefit from such bags, see http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/25167.

Especially good with Evo
but feel free to use with any game you like.

Especially good with Reef Encounter
but feel free to use with any game you like.

2. And choose 1 of the following games:
A.
Zombie in my Pocket.

B.
Obnoxio.

C.
Dice: The Evolution. (Dice not included).

D.
Jungle.

E.
Wordfinger.

F.
Pocket Rocket Racers.

3. And choose up to 2 of the following items:
A.
If you enjoy playing Notre Dame
but are tired of your rats looking like this

, then you might enjoy this mob of angry rats.

B.
And a Priority Deal (1st player) marker that can be used in games such as 1830: Railways & Robber Barons
or 1861: The Railways of the Russian Empire
or really any game where there is a need to identify which player will go first on the next turn.

Good luck and thanks for participating! (Feel free to send a note to your friends, co-workers, neighbors, cousins, and various strangers asking them to participate in this Pick-Me chain (or at least to thumb your entry)).

I will cover shipping to USA.

Everything between now and the next game is just killing time. Matchstickman. True, so very true.

Pick Me

This is item number: SEVEN in the Pick Me chain.

This process is repeated at 10 times.

What is being offered:

A wood-burnt box for the game Lifeboat. Included is a new copy of the game. I like this game a lot, especially the artwork.

Edit: Realizing my judgment may be a little short-sighted and not everyone is crazy about Lifeboat, after all it is currently ranked 1459, I added two more offerings.

OR

This wood-burnt box which can be customized with your name. It will be finished with your choice of stain and lacquered. Dividers can be added to further complete the box.

OR

I will make you a custom box with wood-burned artwork of your choice and dividers. Stained and finished. You provide the artwork or link to the artwork and internal dimensions.

I will pay to ship this box and game anywhere on this planet.

I will pick a winner on Monday evening, April 27, 2009.

I would like to see crafts and other inventive offerings come back into this chain. There have been some cool things offered in this particular chain. Once this chain is complete, I am considering starting a generosity chain called, "Crafty Bastards", featuring hand crafted gaming items.

Hurry and get your item listed!

Good luck and thanks for participating! Feel free to send a note to your friends, co-workers, neighbors, cousins, and various strangers asking them to participate in this Pick-Me chain (or at least to thumb your entry).

And the uncontested winner is Ben Lott!
