Things to look into in case you've recently been enjoying Homer's great epics. The first wave of popularity for Homeric games started in 1980. Like the interval between the world wars, the second wave broke twenty years later.

Never savored the glory and wonder of the Epics? Check them out:

The Iliad: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=0385059418/thedetecta...
The Odyssey: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=0374525749/thedetecta...

First the games based on The Odyssey, then The Iliad inspired ones.

I've heard here before that El Grande was originally about the Trojan War, but rethemed by the publisher. So Spain is more interesting than Troy?

"Heroes of the Underworld" - a great look at the underworld of Greek mythology and the many characters who inhabit it. Much, much more than just Hades and Persephone.

"In the kingdom of immortals, the restless gods decree that mortal man will fight one another to prove their loyalty. By order of Zeus, the war god Ares leaves his throne to inform man of this noble contest. To the victors go the spoils of war and eternal gratitude from the gods.

As the general of battle hardened archers, infantry, and other units, you have been commissioned by the high priests to lead your people to victory. When the sisters of fate look favorably upon you, your armies will find strategic advantage on the battlefield. Ambush, flank and surround your opponent's forces in an effort to gain the upper hand. If the battle looks bleak, call on your mercenary forces to turn the tide."

Have no direct experience with this one which does not seem directly based on Homer's tales, but this link will let you easily find the description and decide for yourself.

Many of Homer's heroes are included in Mythology, and Helen is one of the "Quest Objects" that you are trying to recover (along with Aphrodite, the Golden Fleece, the Golden Apples, etc.) Quite a fun game, btw.

Appreciate the tip on this British game first published in 1983. It appears that the Homeric myths play at least a small role.

I bought this for my two boys (6 and 7). They love playing it and after seeing the cartoonish artwork on the cards, they asked me "Is there a movie of this?". Welcome to the video age. At any rate, it did manage to get them interested in reading a children's version of the story!

I'll post a photo when I get a chance.

The "Troja" module is based on The Iliad. The Settlers of Catan expansion for 2001 is not very close to the events of the tale, but quite fun nevertheless.

Same author, and there is a relation, but not a close one. Troy is a tactical level simulation of the [Homeric] battle of Troy. Like R&T, it uses Gods cards to simulate the meddling of the gods in the various fights.

I'd like to resist the idea of throwing all of Greco-Roman mythology together and adhere more closely to The Iliad and The Odyssey. But here is the suggestion, even though it appears to be more directly inspired by Jason and the Argonauts.

A small two-player game of the Trojan War, this recreates the conflict in an abstract fashion (no map of the battlefield) by pitting heroes against each other and allowing for interaction with the gods. This game can be played solitaire.

Yaquinto's Mythology (1980) definitely belongs here.

Also worth mentioning is ICE's Mythic Greece source book for Hero System and other RPGs. It isn't a game, but it is a very good source book (much better than Mythic Egypt, which soon followed).

Victory Games' Peloponnesian War (1991) isn't Homeric, in the sense that it is an actual historic wargame.

Which is the most adventurous of the boardgames? Also I wasn't aware that BGG was taking RPG's to the listing of games(although some board games play like RPG's)

Not in the above list but there is "Mediterranean Adventures." It concerns the first 6 books in Virgil's "Anaeid." Hardmounted board, two sheets of perforated card cutouts, six sided dice and plastic pawns/tokens, and one sheet of rules (two pages). Published in 1991 by Mediterranean Adventures (yes, the same name as the game title). The only contact I have is the addresss included in the game: PO Box 154, Dogsboro, Delaware, 19939. Other than that, I can't think of a way of contacting them. Possibly the store Days of Knights in Newark, DE. may have a line on them?
