This year I did my first trip to Essen with fellow BGG member David Ausloos (who is currently in the final phase of designing his first game that will be released next year if all goes well). It was a true adventure with getting lost in the center of Essen and discovering many new games at the wonderful Essen fair. These are my purchases, as most people at Essen I ended up buying a lot more than anticipated.

David also posted a report on our journey: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/226561

Cuba was a must-buy for me, I am a sucker for games with such a lovely theme and a board that looks this good. Purchased the German Eggert Spiele version for 29 euros.

Duel in the Dark was the only game that both David and I obtained (at 29 euros). Finally gamers get the chance to bomb Germany although some may feel that bombing cities like Dresden is a bit morbid and politically incorrect but hey it's only a game.

I was lucky, it was priced at 10 euros and I was looking at it (I like Faiduti) but in the end I put it back. The female shopkeeper saw that it caught my eye and she gave it to me as a present because I already purchased 3 other games in that booth. Naturally I was happy with her decission.

Enjoy.

This is a wonderful game.

There are many great things about it, but one of the best is that you never know who's won until the points are totted at the end. It's always tight and it's very hard to see before then - this really makes it tense and hard to leader bash.

13. Board Game: Cleopatra and the Society of Architects [Average Rating:6.83 Overall Rank:422]

Days of Wonder games are distributed by Hodin in my country (Belgium). They have a policy of working with a high profit margin which results in games priced at 50 euros and thus I mostly don't buy them. Hodin's bigest competitor in the Belgium-Netherlands area is 999 Games, who have a strategy of sharp prices with a smaller profit margin but a higher turnover.

Cleopatra was on my wishlist since last year and I found a German version on Spiel for only 19 euros! That's under half the price that Hodin charges them in Belgium. (19 euros)

Don't be too sure. It's a light, light, light game, and it's fairly uninteresting. In one of the games I played, all the good cards came out in one column, effectively breaking the game.

I've tried this in the meantime and I don't think it deserves it's bad reputation. Sure it's light, short and lacks depth but hey it's just a filler and a very good filler. And it doesn't break the game if your good cards (those will be different for every player btw) fall into 1 collumn, U will just have to adjust your strategy to that situation.

15. Board Game: BOL (Balls Of Light) [Average Rating:6.13 Unranked]

At the Booth of Angelo Porazzi games we were stopped by Angelo himself, a very nice man and extremely enthusiastic about his designs. He trapped David and I into a game of BOL (Balls of Light).

It was a horrible experience, personally I'd rather play the Game of Goose then this one again. The game looks awful and like it's designed by children, the mechanics combine roll & move with voting. I hope for Angelo that he managed to sell at least one copy, it would surprise me if he did but with his persuasion and overdose of enthusiasm U just never know. At least we can say we played a game with a designer...

I already mentioned that Italian designer Angelo Porazzi is a very enthusiastic man with charisma. He also managed to push David and me to play another of his creations: Scaraball. I must admit, the experience wasn't as horrible as playing Balls of Light. It's basically a dexterity game that could be fun with the right group but not really my kind of thing.

Porazzi also designed Peacebowl that doesn't get bashed on BGG, that one might be worth checking out, it was also for sale at Essen but we didn't play it. Two games with our Italian friend was enough. I hope it was a good fair for him.

Ciao William, yes Essen 07 was quite good for me

http://warangel.it/ES7.htm

- BOL sold out on day two

- Scaraball on day three

- LovePigs is now at FRED distribution USA

Nick Medinger of Funagain played BOL on day 1 and had fun, like lots of many other people; he came back on day 3 and the game was sold out.
On his Funagain website all interested gamers may found BOL, Scaraball and LovePigs, all my novelties of Essen 07.

On official wesbite www.warangel.it find deep descriptions of BOL (and any of my home made games)and the complete rules in English fixed by Rick Partin. The core of the game is to create and propose new rules while playing the game, if majority of players around the table accept, you play that way.
A lot of children, mums, families, gamers had fun with this idea.
http://warangel.it/BOLeng.html

Thanks for all, didn't forced anyone to play with me, 11 years creating games and partecipating fairs help, and happy to read so many things about my games in your friendly writings!

Ciao
Angelo Porazzi

Since Angelo mentioned me in his post as the editor of the copy in English, let me simply suggest that people go to his link, http://warangel.it/BOLeng.html, and read about "BOL" for themselves, including the rules. As Angelo himself notes, BOL is a simple game that can be enjoyed by children and families--and probably anyone else can get into the spirit of his games, which are ultimately about having fun. Within that link, Angelo refers to variants and encourages others to create their own variants. BOL itself has set and definite rules of its own. Check it out.

Ciao Angelo, I'm glad that Essen was a good fair for you. I realize that it's extremely difficult for a small publisher to get exposure with so much competition out there. And off course you didn't force us to play but regarding my comments on BOL: I hope it didn't offend you as this was not my intention. It might be a good game for children but not for people who are into gamers games I guess and roll and move games are a bit something of the past. Enthusiasm is a good thing, it helps to increase your sales.

Exacly Jeff, it was the price. Normally I'm not the kind of person who looks at the price. But when U visit Essen, believe me U will look and compare the prices since there is so much choice and many games are sold in several booths, often at different prices.

I went to Essen intending to certainly buy the 4 following games: Brass, Duel in the Dark, Container and Cuba.

But when I arrived at the fair I saw so many interesting games at low prices that I thought it was better to buy 2 games for 18 or 20 euros instead of one game for 40. Brass & Container were 40 euros thus I didn't purchase them. Maybe I can find Brass at Essen in 2008 or 2009 for 20 euros so I decided to wait.

As a Martin Wallace fan with Liberté as the best game in my collection I will certainly obtain Brass at some point in the future.
