I think that back in the day, the "Old Guy and his Girlfriend" motif must have been a good way to market boardgames. What old geezer wouldn't be excited by the prospect of getting some attractive girlfriend by buying a game at the local toy store?
(I am sure there are more games with covers like this, so help me find them! Go, my minions! Scour the earth to find them!)

It gives the appearance of having been a trend in marketing, but we never thought of it as a "good way" to market. We just plain didn't understand it. I could only guess that there was some presumption of "European" (mysterious European?) as implying sophistication.

What's funny is that I hadn't yet looked at this list when I responded in [url= http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/237608]this thread. And the first two items I mentioned in the thread were the first two items on the list. Obvious choices or simply great minds thinking alike?
