Despite the rulebook and the numbers on the side of the box, some game just don't work with a certain number of Players.

Now, this makes me a little sad, because there are some fantastic games out there that probably have gotten a bad rap just because the game is playing below the quality it should be at.

I figured I'd throw together a list of games that I think become piss poor when pushed either below or above the threshold.

The box says five players and that's a lie!

This is the worst offender of any game I've ever played. I'll start here because it isn't that there is a decrease in quality for all those involved, but rather it is a four player game. If you add a fifth, that person is the banker and gets to read the cards. Boy, doesn't that sound like fun. The plus side is that you can't lose as you don't get to score or participate in any of the actual game.

The box says six, but someone is gonna get a bullet to the chest.

Unlike games that have actual elimination, Imperial just eliminates the sixth player by not allowing that player to ever make any real action. The sad thing is that you don't know who it is going to be until too late. Then you get to sit and watch the game for a couple hours.

I love Imperial, but with 6 players there is just too high a likelihood that someone is going to get irrevocably screwed, only to become a objet d'art for the rest of the game.

I promise myself to only play this with 5 or fewer players for the sake of some poor sap who gets sumped from play.

The box says 2-6, but the game only works at full capacity.

Unless you have any real competition then gameplay is entirely processional and stagnant. It pretty much plays itself until you can really begin to interact with other players. With five it begins to work, but doesn't really play well until you have 6 players in each other's cities. If you aren't in direct competition with at least two other players in each city, then majorities are determined early with no hope for actually taking cities from other players. The tension immediately becomes diffused without having to make real decisions on what you are going to maintain.

The box says five and that's too chaotic for me.

This is a very light filler game, that offers a variety of strong tactical decisions. It plays quick and everyone is up in each other's grill, but with 5 so much happens by the time it comes around to your turn and so many players are going for the same kinds of things, that there is no way to really formulate any real plan. I'm not saying that this game is strategy heavy, but with 5 you barely make a rough guess at what would be your best action and then see what unfolds until your next turn. There is no planning. It may be that a city could close out as soon as you get in it.

I'll gladly play this game, but not with 5.

Box says 2-6 players.

We have a standard chant when that 6th player is eliminated in a mere few turns or worse.

"Hope you drove yourself."

With any luck he also drove that endangered 5th player as well.

When all that distracting driving is completed we'll settle in for that 4 player game we came to play.

The box says 1-4. Solo is by far my favorite way to play, but 2p is okay. The problem with 3-4 players is the way turns are allocated from the action deck. It is easy to go a long stretch between individual player turns. The downtime and frustration is bad enough, but it also makes it overly difficult for successful players to avoid warships and king's commisioners.

Says 3 to 6, but that just doesn't make sense. The game is beautiful at 3 or 4, but the problem is, because you have a limit to the value of the tricks you can take in a hand, with six players you could actually reach that limit by winning a single trick.

With 3 or 4 there is strategy to setting the limit amount via the island creation, and there is strategy to taking tricks, hopefully just enough. With five or six the game simply becomes, "please don't let me win this trick, please don't let me win this trick, please don't let..." for eight rounds. NOT fun.

Just learned this one the other day with my wife. We thought we were doing something wrong when the game kept getting down to one of us having one card left to play before the game ended, but having to pick cards back up again when the other took over a kingdom. We knew we were doing something wrong when we ran out of victory point chips and had to start writing scores down. As it turns out... we weren't doing anything wrong.

The game just doesn't seem to work right with two people, as it doesn't end (there's even a funny quote somewhere in the rules about players "probably thinking the game will never end"). From the comments here, this seems to be the general opinion. The only way we found to end the game was just to play our cards stupidly and ineffectively so that we wouldn't capture any further kingdoms. Not sure why the box says two.

Santiago is listed as 3-5 players. It plays with all those numbers, but the game is definitely at it's best with 5. 4 is acceptable, though not quite as good.

With 3, you're just not playing the same game. If you played and disliked Santiago, chances are you played with 3. Try it again with 5.

Claims it works with 2, but it's kind of pointless then, and almost all luck of the draw (one player could draw all merchant ships which would guarantee a lose.)

On the other end, this actually DOES work with 5 okay, even though the rules say 2-4 (or 6, or 8 for team play). The potential problem of getting locked out of a ship isn't as big as you might think.
