The past few years have seen the fast spread of iPhones, iTouch and their users worldwide (80+ countries.) They are both portable internet interfaces and computers, enabling their users to access BGG from virtually anywhere they have a wireless phone or wifi connection. Now join the iPad users as well!

With the coming of the iPhone and iPad also came a surge of gaming opportunities. First with online web apps and now with an SDK to allow true app development, its internet interface allows a wide variety of gaming opportunities.

This list is also dedicated to encouraging new development of future games, hopefully of the multi-player networked variety. What will not be included are apps which require breaking ("jailbreaking") of iPhones.

What I would like to see: More board game implementations, especially Euros. Now that Germany, France and the UK are getting iDevices, I'm hoping we won't have to wait too much longer. Above all, less 1-player games and more multi-player network games. (I thinking of live and move-by-move gameplay with my friends in other parts of the world.)

Since there are hundreds of thousands of iPhone apps in the AppStore (and who knows how many webapps), this is by no means an attempt to document them all - just a mention or tip of the hat to the cream of the crop and the rare solo attempts.

If you didn't brick up your iPhone on the last firmware update... if your game table is an iPhone... sit back and enjoy a few board games. Please feel free to add the ones I've missed, comment on ones I've listed and, in general, push the field of mobile gaming forward in a positive manner.

Really? It seems like updating a jailbroken phone is a huge pain even if you're technically savvy.

This is a pretty simple but addictive trick-taking game with a pirate theme. The graphics are good, but the interface will take a couple of minutes to get used to.

If you're planning on buying the physical Treasure Fleet game anyway, then get this app first, because it will give you a way to get $5 off a copy of the physical game.

It is true that some apps are device-specific. If that is the case, the apps typically say so, as far as I've noticed. I don't know whether you would see an error if you downloaded an app for a mismatched device.

Like Cass said there are games or Apps that require specific firmware or hardware. For instance apps that require a camera will only work with the iPhones or the new 4th Gen iPod Touch.

Here are the requirements for Treasure Fleet:

Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later

Sometimes when changes are made to the app it will be unavailable temporarly however, it looks like this hasn't been updated since April so I'm not sure what might have caused it.

Here is a link the US iTunes page for the game:

http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=Smq3RC8yf5I&offe...

The game actually looks really interesting so I think I'll give it a shot.

It should be noted that like the original release of Kachina listed earlier, this is not a full implementation of the game, but is a solitaire exercise. It is a nice little single player puzzler with three different variations to play, but is graphically uninteresting.

I can't imagine what I'd need it for. Maybe there's something there I don't know I have to have, but I'm very happy with its clone. Lux Touch Lite got me hooked because it was free. I was so hooked I readily paid for Lux Delux without even checking reviews. I can't remember the difference between the two, but I wasn't disappointed.

The free app is worth having, the long PC trial is worth having, and the paid app is worth having! I never tried the paid PC software.

Anyway, it has hotseat support and is delightfully customizable risk. Having the phone pick nations (optional, but I can't stand long setup), move armies, and do all the dice rolls under the hood makes a two day game into a two hour game at worst. Some of the alternate maps like castle seige and space wars are pretty darn cool.

I've broken it out at parties and taco bell, with great success. Even non-gamers have caught on, and smiting nations with my finger just feels good!

I've heard the new updates are very slow, though. More's the pity, though fortunately I haven't updated. Whew!

I'm putting this under Risk, although the game I'm referring to is quite different but shares some similarities.

Strategery (iTunes link) is a nice, simple strategy game played on a randomly generated board of hexes. You place armies like in Risk and attack by rolling dice. It's fun and quite addictive, and a well designed app. And, best of all, you can download a "lite" version that is nearly the same as the full version! The full version adds a hard and brutal mode, some specific game modes, and allows you to redeploy your reserves yourself, in stead of random.

Yes! Strategery is awesome: quick, simple play; shake to get a new map; play over the 'net against others or even pass'n'play.

It's probably the game I play most often on the iPhone.

Hasbro/EA Yahtzee Adventures allows you to play several variations of the classic game against animated opponents or friends (pass the phone).

The variations of Yahtzee present include:
Classic: plain vanilla Yahtzee
Rainbow: each die turns one of 3 colors; like Yahtzee but players may also score "color flushes"
Duplicate: basically Challenge Yahtzee; same random rolls are used for all players
Battle: Players start with 100 points; "Bottom half" (straights, 3/4 of kind, etc.) take points from opponents while "top half" (1,2...6) heal you. Eliminate opponents by driving their scores to 0.

There's a story mode where each variation is introduced, or you can just jump into one of the above games.

But this is Gawd Awful. They tried to turn the card game into some sort of semi-action game.

Very mixed reviews.
Not sure if it's an official port; "Based on the extremely popular and widely recognized PASS THE PIGS brand", whatever "based on" means.

Not impressed with the latest update:

"What's New in Version 1.1.21
Get More Games Link."

Not sure what happened to my game image. I went ahead and deleted my entry since yours had the iTunes link and a screen shot from the game. No worries.

It's a pretty good version of the game (but it's a very simple game). My kids like the press-your-luck excitement.

I remember when this was first published in the mid-80s as Pigmania. The writing in the rules manual was quite entertaining...

Another childhood game I'm not particularly fond of as an adult.

Earle Davies of ifonearcade.com emailed me a correction for us.

Their version of Connect Four is indeed multi-player and vs. other players on the interweb, including a blue chat box at the bottom of the screen. There are options for creating both public and private games on a free login.

I recently discovered a new one. It's called "Construct 4 ONLINE". It improves on some of the others by limiting the amount of time you have to move to 45 seconds per move or 5 minutes for the whole game. Makes a big difference as the one I used to play would sometimes match me against someone who wanted to just waste 20+ minutes of my time by taking forever to move.angry

It also has cool scoring in that you get bonus points for 5, 6 or 7 in a row or for wins in multiple directions.

The best part is that there always seems to be lots of people on there to play against. It means it can do a better job of matching you against someone who is close to you in skill.

And you can't just get to the top of the leaderboard by challenging your friends to games. You can only play whoever the games matches you against.

I've been playing for a while and, after being #1 in the league for a bit (there are over 11,000 players), I am now in the top 100.

Oh, and it's free.

Just released - "iCorners" game (like Chinese checkers, but on standard checkers board)

It's also "iCornersPro" available, that allows playing over Wifi and Hotseat.

Why? Blackjack is a game of you against the house, it has nothing to do with the other players.

It's to practice card counting.

Speaking as a table games supervisor in the biggest casino in the western hemisphere, I can tell you that blackjack has everything to do with the other players. Until an Ipod app duplicates the drunken oaf that insists on shouting "Winner, winner, chicken dinner!" every time he wins a hand, until said app duplicates a player spilling a drink on the cards, or some guy yelling "Monkey!" every time he wants a face card, or blames the dealer for his own stupid play, or the jackass that has lost all his money but still sits there and tells everyone else how they should have played their hands, until these occur, the app will never convey the true casino blackjack experience.

It's not just for board games, but the appshopper app tracks prices and free apps - and has saved me literally hundreds of dollars on games.

For board game related app news and reviews, subscribe to the iOS blog here on the geek, it's awesome.

I just use this (and another geeklist) to be alerted when games are released, then I add them to my AppShopper wish list and wait for the price drop. :-D

two iphone queries, one on topic, one off

what sites are good for game ratings, the ones Im googling seem to have hundreds of games listed but none mention any of "our" BGG games, there must be a site like the ipad one that rates games that might be a bit more in line with the stuff here

also, does anyone know what the "nonewsisgoodnews" app comes under, I cant find it when i search the appstore on the phone.
