This will be a compilation of The Age of Sail tactical ship on ship games. Nothing more or less, (must have picture), celebrating my year and a half long quest to get a copy of Close Action finally, (without paying through the nose for it). May even get some BGGers to pull out some older games and replay the days of wood and iron, ocher and gunpowder.(think I spelled it right)

I have not played Close Action v7 (published by Clash of Arms Games), but I have played the earlier Close Action v6 which I do like and continue to play to this day. Some other age of sail gamers in my gaming group have played Close Action v7 but tell me they prefer Close Action v6 if given a choice of games. However, finding the earlier v6 of the game has got to be very hard to do as I have never been able to find a second copy for a friend.

Wooden Ships & Iron Men by Avalon Hill was derived from the old Battleline Press game called Ship o' the Line (designed as a miniatures game). Both are very similar, but when AH bought the rights to the Ship o' the Line game they made some changes. Overall, I think these changes were good and while I still have both games I think I would rather play WS&IM than SotL. WS&IM is a good game that I still play and I would recommend it to others interested in age of sail games and looking for a set of rules to play larger naval battles.

I use to have this game but gave it to a friend because he really wanted it and I didn't care for it all that much. I can't remember the details of the game, but it had some pros and cons and its designed for smaller ship actions. I can't recall why it didn't float my boat, but I do recall the game had some interesting concepts.

I own this one, but have not played it yet. This game covers fleet command and control more than the minutia of ship to ship combat.

I have Flying Colors and I think I still need to play it some more. So far I'm leaning towards Wooden Ships and Iron Men for fleet actions, but Flying Colors has some good ideas. More on this game later as I would like to play it a few more times first.

Enemy in Sight is nothing like Wooden Ships and Iron men or Flying Colors, but its a fun and simple card driven game that captures the flavor of the age of fighting sail. The fun value is high but the detail and historical value of this game is low. Overall, fun to play with friends and family. I still have my original AH copy of the game (cards are sleeved) and continue to play it, but yes, this game has been reprinted. I have not seen the reprint in person, but from what I gather from the website, it looks good.

I would say that it is worth the Download price, of $15, easily.

I'm with Kevin on this one. This game is reaching for me too, but there are those that enjoy it. Its easy to convert this game into pure historical, but why bother when there are better games out there that are already pure historical. With Orcs, Dwarves, Elves, etc., this game was designed for the fantasy/Sci-Fi.

I have both versions of Signal Close Action by Langton. While the newer version of this game is better than the first, its still not as clean as I think it can be and to detailed in some areas (sailing) and to basic in others (gunnery). Fun game, but there are other games I would rather play if I had to limit myself.

This game uses modular boards and terrain components to re-create battles from the War of 1812. It includes a set of both land and naval rules, as well as a number of scenarios depicting land, amphibious and naval operations. I have played most of the land and amphibious scenarios and must say that it is an excellent, light wargame. Unfortunately, I havn't played any of the naval scenarios yet so I really can't say how well they play. However, comments about the naval rules from the forums here on BGG appear to be mixed.

As an added bonus, each game comes with two metal ship miniatures!

I have this game. Its more for land battles that ship battles I think since the ship rules and game play is somewhat basic, but so are the land rules and game play. For Honor and Flory is just an easy block type game that is simple and fun to play and not a lot of details. Oh, and this game can be played with miniatures instead of blocks but more on that when I ever get around to posting pictures and instruction on the game link.
