Over at http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/28253, it was suggested that a list of the lowest ranked game people prefer to Puerto Rico would also be interesting.

So - how far down the rankings can you go and still find a game you prefer to Puerto Rico?

There is only 1 game I would prefer over Puerto Rico at this time, and that is Caylus. When I play it has less downtime, and more nastiness.

At 673 this is the lowest ranked game I prefer to Puerto Rico. 1861: The Railways of the Russian Empire is second from the bottom of the rankings though I rate it a 9 to PRs 8.25, but on most occasions 1861 is far too long to be chosen anyway.

It has to be Knizia's Finest Auction Game - Modern Art. It rates one place above Puerto Rico in my top 10. With Die Macher, Tigris and Caylus sitting atop it. This is the lowest I can go .... not very low I know but that might change when I get my hands on the Valley Games relaunch of Big City - I just know I'm going to love that!

I was surprised to find that Cosmic Encounter is currently ranked hovering around a 7. I'd rather play Cosmic Encounter than Puerto Rico any day. I really need to be in a mood to pull Puerto Rico out any more. Really, the only time I feel like playing PR these days is when I want to introduce it to neophyte gamers.

I'm curious about the rating jump Cosmic Encounter will get with the new edition.

There's quite a few lower ones that I prefer at the moment. But of the ones I'm sure I'll pretty much always prefer, Himalaya stands out.

I'm just a sucker for Simultaneous Action Selection combined with Pick-up-and-Deliver. It just makes for such a fun time!

Now, the original rules definitely had some balance problems, but as long as you use some scoring variants to smooth those out, Himalaya just takes the cake over Puerto Rico.

Magic Realm is my highest ranked game. Some of that preference is still historic: I had some amazing Magic Realm games with friends and family more than 25 years ago. And some is current: my eldest son loves playing Magic Realm - it's one of the few boardgames that can tempt him away from the computer!

The second lowest ranked game I'd prefer to Puerto Rico is Princes of the Renaissance.

Well, I rate Puerto Rico a 9. I also rate Ra a 9 and it would probably edge Puerto Rico if I really had to choose. However, the only game I rate a 10 is Poker. My relationship with poker is a little complicated since I played it for a living for ~2 years, and like any job (even ex-job) I go through periods (less frequent now) where I'd rather do almost anything than work.

For me Manhattan (rated #372) is a favorite game for my family and so much better regarded by us than PR. Game is easy to teach, easy to learn and pretty simple to play yet trying to either protect oneself and ones neighborhoods or trying to attack an opponents neighborhood(s) is challenging. Plus only 24 pieces to play in the entire game makes it "short and sweet" For me, this game has the greatest disparity between the BGG rating and my rating.

I like Puerto Rico a fair bit, rating it an 8, so couldn't look too low in my listings. Of the games I also rate an 8 or higher, and if an 8 prefer to PR, Set is the lowest rated one. I play a lot of Set, and I continue to like it a lot. It is a great filler, especially while waiting for people to show up for a gaming session since players can join (or leave) a game of Set at any time.

First, I enjoy racing games in general. I also love the card mechanic in this and Daytona 500.

I find this game fun. I have found PR less fun the past couple of plays. That's probably the main reason why I have quite a few games rated higher right now.

Navia Dratp, Wizard, and Die Zing!

I've rated ND at 9.6, and it's "close enough" for it to get this call. Both Wizard and Die Sieben Siegel are screwage trick taking games, and similar in many respects, so they naturally cluster together.
