Upon reading some of the discussion on this great geeklist I found myself thinking of those moments when my favorite TV shows made that horrendous mistake. They are so desperate for ratings that they try something drastic and downright silly to try and bring back their viewers.

So please share those Shark Jumping moments that you remember.

Family Guy has been disappointing since they got back on the air. I hate how they return to one time characters. The greased up deaf guy was funny once. And only so so then.

I have to admit I still watch most of the episodes, but they're just not as good.

I'm probably gonna get some hate mail for suggesting this, but I think the show Heroes jumped some time near the end of season one. There was the whole "Save the cheerleader, save the world" thing, yet that had nothing that I could tell with the world being saved. Then season 2 tried to make the human heroes into villains and villains into heroes or something. They they ask the viewers for ideas for shows. Isn't that their job? Like the show, but seems to be losing focus for me anyway.

I LOVE the Amazing Race. It's a game show, yes, but it exposes people to places, people, and experiences they never thought they'd ever see and opens their eyes to the world. But the Race seriously jumped the shark when they decided to make a "Family Edition" in season 8 with 4-person teams instead of 2-person teams. Too many Racers to care about, an awful family in the final three, and worst of all (apart from an all-too-brief trip to Central America) they never left the country. There some great things in America, but the World's Largest Office Chair ain't one of them. The Race is about going new places and experiencing new things and this was a serious misstep. Luckily the show rebounded in season 9, with 10 and 12 being top-tier seasons.

Submitted for your approval:

Farscape - never jumped.

Okay, if pressed, I would say that shoving a whole season's worth of plot into a four-hour miniseries really, really didn't work. Even though I was glad to get a final resolution of everything, it seemed like too many plot-threads got short shrift.

And yeah, at times the fourth season appeared to have been written by inmates at an insane assylum. But then I think "The Madness of John Crichton" was the plot arc by that point anyway. There are only so many times you can frell with a guy's brain before he goes off the deep end.

And I seem to recall that the Macguffin for one episode was that they had to stop at some planet so that Rygel could take a dump, and this got them into all sorts of wacky adventures. I think Season Four was the Year of Bodily Functions.

I didn't like Noranti, I didn't care for Sputnik, I couldn't follow the politics of the Peacekeepers and the . . . um . . . those big lizard guys. Not even sure it all made sense.

But you know . . . it was all so frelling cool. Nothing else has come close.

Freaks and Geeks

This was, I believe, the currently beloved Mr. Apatow's first major production. The show was funny as hell and hit the teen angst dead on. Of course it was doomed because it was "showing" kids having sex and smoking dope on prime-time...but the last episode I saw was too much.

It got preachy with Bill almost dying from a peanut and "the sister" smoking dope and having an existential crisis.

That being said, "Go for 'super-stud'" and "you're a butt-patter, you pat butts" will live on in me forever.

Lost in Space

Somewhere in the first season, I think. When I was in college I happened to catch reruns of the first few episodes, and I was amazed to find that it was actually seriously entertaining. Dr. Smith was a credible villain, someone you respected and feared. I didn't watch enough to find out where he devolved into a silly ninny and the whole show became a camp-fest.

I enjoyed watching it as a kid (the first thing I saw on color TV was a "Lost in Space" episode on our neighbor's set), but I was young enough that the ugly aliens they had often scared me.

The moment that tv stations realised they could save a ton of money on production costs by not innovating, paying script writers or for special effects actors and the like and replace most prime time viewing slots with damned awful reality programs most of TV jumped the shark for me.
It's all truly awful, that includes any idol, factor, princess, pro, geek, date, gay/straight,survivor, big brother and so on.

A bunch of great entries for sure but for me it was MASH.
It started when Lt. Col. Blake was killed off and ended when Radar went home.

Decline and fall;
Col. Potter did a fine job but I missed the bungling Blake.
Radar was the glue.

The show kept reviving itself in the interim though;
Frank and Margaret stopped the hanky panky and Frank becomes obsessed with Margaret when she marries an Army officer.
Trapper John left, which I thought would ruin the show but BJ Honeycutt stepped in brilliantly (IMHO).

And in spite of itself;
Klinger stops wearing women's clothes (but can't seem to let go of the earrings).
Charles steps in when Frank leaves for home, another fine performance.

The Apprentice

I will admit to being a fan of some reality shows, including Amazing Race, Survivor, Project: Runway, and the aforementioned Trump vehicle.

This show seems to have had a number of shark-jumps, one of which I'm watching now. To date:

(a) Martha Stewart's Apprentice: one season, before NBC fired her.

(b) the season in La-La-Land: this show needs NYC.

(c) Celebrity Apprentice: I watch, only to fill the void. And as I hear the next season will be another celeb affair, this season will likely be my last.

(c addendum) the issue with Vinny turning snitch. An over-the-top soap opera that signifies the beginning of the end.

They seemed to be so hurting for viewers that they killed off the main character, center of the show.

I mean, how can you have a show about Rome without Julius Caesar? And the way they killed him? Senators pulling out knives and going at him on the Senate floor? Completely over the top.

I'm surprised with the Buffy entry this one hasn't made it.

I'd have to say the beginning of the end was the reappearance of Conner. Sure the series had it's hits and misses as far as episodes went, but story lines. Conner was just plain annoying. And everything around Jasmine was a bad. I understand he wanted to give her work, but she was even more annoying then Conner.

So, when 5th season started it could only get better, but then that god/Fred thing? I know they only had half a season to compress what he wanted to get done in 2 and 1/2. But, please.

Crime Story
Crime Story was an awesome, gritty show about cops and mobsters in Chicago in the late 50s (early 60s?) with Dennis Farina at his toughest, grittiest best.

I thought it was going to jump the shark when mobsters moved to Las Vegas and Farina joined the Feds, but it didn't.

It did jump the shark when the mob boss and his dopey henchman got blowed up real good in a fake town on an atomic test site (think Indian Jones minus the lead-lined fridge, a blatant rip-off). That was a goofy, season end cliff hanger. Then next season started off well without them, but mob guy returns with a white streak in his hair and things started getting real preposterous, with glowing nuclear waste and immunity from the feds 'cause, you know, they blew him up and felt bad about it.
