This is a follow-up GeekList to this one concerning the The Settlers of Catan series.

I find myself drawn to Dice-fests more and more nowadays.

My own definition of Dice-fest: any game that the outcome consists almost entirely on dice and you feel like you are rolling a bunch of dice.

So feel free to add your own... and let the Dice-fest begin!

Its a classic... and most people know how to play.

It can be fun with the right cloud, and a good primer for future Dice-fest games.

I used to love this game so much and have many happy memories playing it with my grandma, etc. I hadn't played in such a long time and this summer we stayed at a vacation home that had it. I figured this was a great time to teach it to my kids.

They hated it. They thought it was boring and my eldest daughter actually said, "too much downtime, mom" *sigh*

I second the recommendation of Kismet. If you're going to play a basic type of Yahtzee, that's the way to go. The colors add a few more meld types and there's also some interesting decisions added (such as multiple bonuses for the Basic section). Even with all the great dice games of the last few years, Kismet can still be fun every now and then.

I still like this game, even though I like the new board games out there. It is the dice classic. You can get this game anywhere. I do prefer other dice games now (Liar's Dice), but it I still like to bring this out occasionally. It is a dice game, so of course there is a lot of luck (randomness) to the game, but there is an element of going for it or playing it safe, like Poker, that I find enjoyable.

This can be played without much thought, but there's actually a good deal of skill if you want to devote the effort to it. The decisions of which dice to lock in can be quite interesting, particularly when you want to steal the leader's top tile. An excellent dice game; just don't play with too many.

I enjoy dice games but this one just fell flat with me after two playings. The best strategy is to always be able to field the most dice and certain characters allow you to do that better than others. The first players able to get them have the best chance to get the King/Queen which then gives you another die. As soon as I saw that Rio Grande was releasing Airships (Giganten der Lufte) I put To Court the King on the trade pile.

Another excellent dice game, but sometimes misunderstood. It isn't a Yahtzee-type game and it isn't really push your luck. Instead, there's a more strategic approach as you decide which powers will work best together and try to apply them to each set of dice rolls. Extra dice are critical, but it's hard to win without at least one power. The decisions are very interesting and quite different than those found in other dice games.

I found it somewhat less interesting then Yatzhee.

To me the pairs and straights you need to roll give you a better chance at rolling that mega Yatzhee at the end. But, ultimately it a long drawn out process to one roll off.

I think I'd rather play Yatzhee.

Not nearly as dicey as To Court the King, but a much better game altogether IMNSHO. Still, the dice really control the whole game so this should be right up your street.

Played it for the first time a few weeks ago and quite liked it. The luck of the roll is a factor, but players could often get quite a lot done even with low rolls, thanks to the way the dice are played. And the different buildings give you some nice different strategy paths to explore. It's a touch longer than I would like, but otherwise a very good and innovative game.

A very good and original game, that eliminates the usual bane of dice games (downtime) by restricting players to a single roll per turn. And yet, it works, because of the choice of what tiles to go for and what dice to use. The weird thing is, the game has had almost no buzz. It's like Queen is running a stealth operation with this game. Look people, it's by the designer of Puerto Rico and Thurn und Taxis! And it's a tremendous family game! Maybe things will change once Rio Grande releases its long delayed English version of the game (although it's hardly necessary, since the components of GdL are language independent). But you'd think the Germans, who love their family games, would be waving the flag for this one. Very strange.

I played this at BGG.con and really had a great time. Smooth gameplay, good decisions, neat theme, and rolling the dice is a lot of fun. There are enough bonuses that the luck of the dice is generally mitigated over the entire game.

I am eagerly awaiting the US release.

It's quite different from To Court the King.

TCTK is about using special abilities over a series of rolls to achieve an outcome. Airships is about determining probabilities and taking a crap-shoot with one single roll.

Or to put it another way, To Court the King is gaming, Airships is gambling.

At this point I prefer To Court the King.

I know it has nothing to do with Alhambra, another game I enjoy. I actually like this game in combination with the original game. The money element of Alhambra is already random, might as well spice it up with dice.

CotG doesn't quite fall into the same category as most of these because there isn't that interesting re-roll/push-your-luck aspect. Regardless, I like this one a lot, though I think it might go on a little too long with five players. I wrote a few strategy articles which I cannot restrain myself from plugging:

This one made my dime list last year and I only received it in mid-November. So much fun, and feels strategic even though lucky dice-rolls control the entire outcome.

Even with all the great recent dice games released, this Sackson gem is still at the head of the class and unquestionably the greatest push-your-luck game ever designed. And Ben, just because you can get lucky with the dice doesn't mean there isn't real strategy involved. You're playing the probabilities, along with the positions of your opponents, and the genius of the game is that this is simple enough so that you can quickly make intuitive-based choices, but complex enough that the decisions aren't easy ones. One of the all-time classics.

An all-time favorite of mine! We used to play regularly with a couple from our church who introduced us to the game. I have a couple of copies in my classroom at school, mostly for fun at indoor recess. BUT I've used the game when I was teaching math to teach probability to the 4th and 5th graders. Good strategic thinking in terms of how far to push your luck + the thrill of dice-rolling! Just a GREAT game.

Another game that gets played often, this time on the PC. I have a bunch of free versions of this along with the official licensed one. I play against the PC mostly as it's not something that the family wants to play.

With the hardest settings, I can usually eek out a win if I play with several computer players as they don't tend to go for the kill and attack me when they probably should.

Even against the computer, there is still that rush of excitement as you attempt to "run the board" and eliminate one of the players. PC games also take about 20-30 minutes at best to play.

I like Knights. I like To Court the King as well, but I still like Knights. I enjoy both of them with 2 or 3 people, more it starts to feel too long. It takes less thought because there are fewer choices, which is not always a bad thing.

I think that a common problem with dice games is that the more people you have the longer the game takes and eventually it outstays its welcome.

It's originally from Knights. The German release of Coloretto came with a bunch of blank cards with Scary Castles on the back as an expansion for Knights. You could fill them in with whatever you want.

And if anyone happens to have some of those blank castle cards they would like to get rid of, please drop me a GeekMail...

My group's game of the month. It got a lot of groans at first because of the name, but we enjoy dice games in general, and as soon as the dice start rolling into the spiffy dice bowl, it was "hey don't attack my Central America! Can't you see that guy over there is going to capture all of Europe if you don't stop him???" And it really does play in 20 minutes as it claims. I know a lot of people compare this to Dr. Knizia's Pickomino but I like this one a whole lot more.

The best thing is that the lid to my trucks center console is large and rectangular and has sides on it like a deep tray. The perfect place to throw dice!

It would work well in a restaurant also gonna have to give that a try.

We find it plays well with four people, two teams of two. There is little downtime as rolling alternates from team to team.

This one is getting a bad rating here, which I don't think it deserves. It's definitely multi-player solitaire but I've found it's interesting to follow along during the other player turns to see what strategy they are pursuing, and of course, remind them they should have build that extra road in the last turn and if they had they would have gotten that city this time around

Also, the designer has an entirely new game you can play with the dice (you print out new rules and player boards). Haven't tried it yet, but it's even more Settlers-like and adds player interaction with the robber and soldiers.

Completely agree that this is underrated. Not quite in the same class as Pickomino/TCtK/Airships, but still a lot of fun. Deciding the path to follow on your scorecard isn't particularly straightforward. And while there's no direct interaction, I'll alter my strategies depending on how well my opponent is doing. Probably plays best with two.

I think this game is actually a little under-rated. Not a bad little dungeoncrawlish game with lots of dice rolling, + cool abacus counters. I'd love to run across some boosters, but apparently only about 12 were ever made or something.
The earlier versions of this actually had dice that unfolded & used to make the pathways on the board!

This is a fun little dice game. I think that it would play well with large groups as well, because everyone would roll at once. I have shown it to my father-in-law to use at Youth Group at church. I love this one, and it's one of the few games I bother to write session reports for...

Knizia does Can't Stop! Sort of.

In this game, you roll two dice, and decide when you want to stop. If you roll an X, then you bust, and you don't get to do anything. If you stop before then, you take the number you roll (the higher number rolled being the 10, and the lowest being the 1, and the highest number you can roll is 76) and place it on the ladder in the middle of the board. The higher the rung on the ladder, the more points it scores. The zinger is that you only score the points for that ladder at the START of your turn, and if anyone else rolls a number equal to or higher than yours, and places their dice lower than you on the ladder, you're bumped off.

I dig this game. It suffers from the same problem as any push-your-luck game, in that you HAVE to press your luck near the end of the game or give the game to another player, but it's always a lot of fun.

Um...Looking at the early response to this list. I don't think you've got any lawsuits coming, Dave.

There's no reason to fear dice. Dice lovers need to stand up and be counted.

No mention of DICEcapades? It's a game with 133 dice. I heard about it on the Spiel podcast, but I can't vouch for it personally. Still, 133 DICE!

Great list! It is definitely time for the dice to get some well-deserved love! I am playing Giganten der Lüfte this Saturday (hopefully...). Can't wait!

Seen it, played it, wanted to kill it. Cranium is honestly ten times better than it.
