I'm afraid that I'm going to have to join the list of people putting Pandemic down as their best new game of this month. I love me some co-op action and Pandemic is possibly the best co-op I've played. It's incredibly finely balanced, difficult to beat and it plays so fast you can barely resist the urge for just one more play... To the extent that we played it 5 times (and lost 5 times) this Friday just gone.

Other than Pandemic I only played a couple of other 'new to me' games in March. Those were Crokinole, which I found to be a very fun and tactical dexterity game, and E.T.I.: Estimated Time to Invasion, which is a fun, if rather chaotic and random, game of staving off an alien invasion in the 1960s. I've gone into much greater detail in my review of the game here on the 'geek.

I finally got a copy of this and it is excelent. It is a good dexterity game and it moves along quick. I have been trying to get a decent copy of this for quite some time, but either the bidding got to high or the copy up for auction was missing so much stuff it ended up in the why bother catregory. The other new games I played this month were.

Ra I got reintroduced to this one and am glad i gave it another go. This is an excelent game.

Yspahan Excelent dice area control game.

Villa Paletti Another good dexterity game.

Wins by default, as it's the only new game I played in March...

But it was pretty fun. Bought both starter decks, played it a lil bit, then bought a few boosters. Will definatly bring it along to my friends big LAN party three weeks from now... Something to play while some people are setting stuff up...

I've been meaning to play this for a year or so since I saw it played at Beyond Monopoly! Finally got a chance at Hugo's last week. Fantastic chrome, you use the box as part of the board and I love the corruption mechanic.

Other first plays this month: Revolution!, N-Tropy and Die Säulen von Venedig.

Cheers,

Jack

Finally I played this nice, fun game that really deserves a reprint, IMHO.
Kinda Eurogame, after all!

Manifest Destiny: bah. Didn't like it too much!
Shogun: good, solid game but abrupt ending.

What can I say. I'm behind the times. Picked up a copy of Hare & Tortoise and found it was great fun (ended up playing it 4 times when I took it back home for my mum's birthday). Probably the most surprisingly enjoyable of my new games

Additionally picked up a copy of Bid, which also surprisingly actually turned out to be rather good, lounging around playing it on the settees late at night with my mum and sister.

Also got to play The Ark of the Covenant for the first time the other weekend. Not my copy, and as I already own Carc I probably won't bother to get a copy for myself. It was okay though.

I played relatively few new games this month but they were all quality in one way or another. This is a trend I'd like to continue.

In all I played 6 new games in March -

Descent: Journeys in the Dark
Dungeon Twister
Camelot Legends
Arkham Horror: Dunwich Horror
Blue Moon: The Flit
Wits & Wagers

All of these games are worthy of owning and in a different month could have won the top honour.

d10-1 I had been warned of Descent's playing time and ignored its taunts for month after month. In the end I succumbed and loved every minute of it.

d10-2 Dungeon Twister was awesome and the depth of thought required is a little mind blowing at first. This will definitely be on my shelf at some point.

d10-3 Camelot Legends is a deceiving little game. I didn't give it the respect it deserved and got my 'ass' handed to me, but loved every minute of it. Go Z-Man.

d10-4 AH: Dunwich was more of the same but I loved the added difficulty. The new mental illnesses and wounds were really cool.

d10-5 Playing my 1st new race (after the original two) just made me appreciate Blue Moon even more. I can't wait to play with the other races now and begin to master a few of them.

d10-6 Wits & Wagers is a great spin on the Trvia Genre. It is really more party game than trivia game and is perfect for those social nights where a drink will be had and non-gamers are the crowd.

But this months award goes to Descent. I played it twice in one weekend at 5 hours per session. A game has to be good if you can enjoy a game over that period of time. Sure it has its limitations and potential flaws but our group had a blast with it. My copy is on the way!

For me, In the Year of the Dragon is my best new game, but only just beating out Thebes.

What I really like about this game is how everything works together. It's not random, other than the initial 'seed' of events.

This game would be outright crazy with a full 5 players. With such numbers, I can imagine the divide between first and last to be very apparent.

Thebes was also a new game to me this month.

While I do really enjoy Thebes, the random draw is evil. The best laid plans can come crashing down if someone is just unlucky on the draw. This is unfortunate, but it would make for a kind of game where parents can play with their kids and the kids can legitimately beat them - which I can believe is nice.

The other new game for me this month was Dungeon Twister, which was pretty good with a 'twist' of an ending (for our game). I can't wait until I get Hamburgum to the table.. mmmmBeerRondel....

I played a few new games this month...Hamsterrolle, Pandemic, and Lifeboats. Hamsterrolle is a blast! It's a fun dexerity game that is different than anything I have. Lifeboats is one we played with four and enjoyed it (but also decided that it would be best with six). Pandemic is one I had fun with, but the more I thought about it, the less I liked it. I just traded my copy for a copy of Royal Turf.

Given I rarely get the chance to play games, but found an excuse to play a few over Easter, most of the games I did play this month were new ones to me.

Played Kingsburg for the first time. Nice to get to roll dice without having to worry too much about luck.

Also played Snatch, which was a quick, fun, but quite stressful, word game.

And Pass the Bomb. I hate party games. This one just makes my brain stop working.

And Apples to Apples. I still hate party games, but somehow this one I don't mind. I think mainly because I can just ignore the game and try and come out with the best sarcastic answers.

And Guillotine. Should have been great, but I found it disappointing.

And finally Ticket to Ride. Though I've played the Europe edition a number of times, and played it online, so that hardly counts. And I still can't decide if I like Ticket to Ride anyway.

Actually a pretty tough choice between

La Citta
Hacienda
On the Underground.

All three are damn fine games, and will definitely stay in my collection and seeing game-time for quite a while. I'll choose La Citta mostly because it's the one I paid shipping and import taxes for, so I'll feel better about paying almost U$75 for it.

Other new games this month:
In the Shadow of the Emperor (great game, pretty different from the usual euro fare).
Mall of Horror (hilarious little nasty game)
Cuba (nice heavy-ish euro, nothing too amazing, though)
Paths of Glory (a bit too much for me)
Cutthroat Caverns (ok)
Age of Gods (horrrrrrrrrrrible)

Hilarious might be a better description. Everybody I played this with really liked it, from casual gamers to wargamers. Typical reaction: 'What a stupid game! One more?'

Last month was pretty dry for me for playing new games but I did manage to get in a single play of MRP and really liked it.

It's a different style of game than my group normally plays. The more direct schadenfreude moves you can make can be fun when you know that the game is pretty much a chaotic frenzy anyway. I rather liked it as a change and look forward to more of it.

I'm going to have to bend the rules a bit here: I've played the French and Italian maps of Power Grid online before March. But this was the first time I played this ftf. It's a very good game because it's Power Grid, but unlike the Benelux map, I don't think this new map really adds something extra to the game. So it's not clear if I should count this one as the best new game.

However, the second game on my list is Loopin' Louie (see Peter Hein's entry, above), and I'm not going to add that stupid game here. (Yeah, ok, it's hilarious. But I'm not admitting that in public.)

My other new games this month were San Juan (which fell disappointingly flat, after Race for the Galaxy), Railways of the World (OK), Gloria Picktoria (Gloria Picktoria; I prefer Union Pacific), Ziegen Kriegen (very light, but fun), and Pick Picknic (great little game).

I've been looking for a great Civil War battle game I think this is. The map is the usual high GMT quality, but the real blessing here is the simple rules, light but important chrome, and the chit pull system that forces you to make more interesting strategic decisions than just pushing counters.

Not that many new games, but very good ones

Carcassonne: King & Scout Played the Scout tiles for the 1st time. Need to play this once more AFTER posting a few questions on some of the tiles as I was not sure I interpreted the rules correctly.

Khronos I had this on my radar screen because the box looks so attractive. The game concept itself is very much ok with the 3 boards and the timing effect of buildings, except for one big negative: down time when other players are thinking about their move [and that can take a while to check several alternative moves]. There's simply nothing you can do - but going to the men's room or the fridge.

Leonardo da Vinci Interesting game that combines auction like mechanisms with collecting commodities and creating inventions in the lab. Want to play this again for sure.

Agricola The obvious winner taking the hype?!
It is a very good game and I [we] like a lot: well structured, and as always with these kind of games, you want to do 17 actions but can only do 2 or a few more. Can't wait until this will be released in Dutch later this month or next month.
There's some luck in the draw of the inital cards, but given the astronomical number of possible combinations, I assume that most luck in the initial drawing can be countered by the other players.
Looks I am the only one that selected Agricola this month, so I am reaaly late with playing this it seems. I beg your forgiveness, all you Agricola-addicts.

Cleopatra has a nice combination of different elements, some of which are very clever and unique, and they work together very well. This and Shadows Over Camelot are definitely my favorite DoW games.

I also played for the first time last month, and enjoyed to different degrees... Kingsburg, Verrater, Thebes and Pillars of the Earth.

Yes, believe it or not. I just got this game recently and certainly have been enjoying playing it with my wife, with my family, and online. Fun for sure.

A tie with this could be Gobblet

I found it at a thrift store and have been playing it quite a bit with my brother. We've played a lot in his garage. It's very portable.

As I'm not normally a fan of direct conflict games (although there are a few exceptions in my collection) I wasn't particularly enthused when this was brought to the table a few weeks back. When the rules explanation began, it left me with this lingering sense of dread over what was about to happen... gulp

Glad to say I was wrong about it. Even though the game is at it's very essence one of conflict and conquest, the concept of when to call time on your civilisation and accepting that their best is behind them, and then having to in effect start again, was one I really enjoyed. Not sure it will have staying power for me, and I certainly wont look to buy my own copy - but based on my first game, I'd be happy to play again. Something that I certainly wouldn't have expected to say beforehand.
