This geeklist was inspired by this thread and my response to it. It is dedicate to games that, while clearly Ameritrash, have complex rules sets and "heavy" mechanics. I'll start this list with my favorites. Please add your so I know what I want next on my wish list.

You had me at "Marvel". I grew up on Iron Man, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, Spiderman, Daredevil, Dr. Strange and the lot. Stan Lee is a god to me. Any wonder I asked for this the Christmas it came out? Complicated rules, but a ripping good time to play, even if I'm getting mopped up by everyone else. Getting "most wanted" villians into play and rootig for them is great fun.

Recognizing art from your favorite comics and/or artists is a nice touch too. "Hey this is from book two of "Marvels" written by Kurt Busiek". I love that.

Hilarious, and true...

I did a "What if TV shows used BGG in their plots?" Geeklist and used Arkham Horror for "24."

"They'll never believe your first game of Arkham Horror was finished in 24 hours!"

"What if we show flashbacks of me playing solo to learn the rules?"

I still love the game, though.

The correct term is "Trekkie."

A "Trekker" is a weak term created by Star Trek fans who were afraid they couldn't get a date if they called themselves "Trekkies," but still wanted to brand themselves.

Come on, be proud. Be a Trekkie.

Okay, that's exceptionally Funny. However, roll one die. If your Investigator rolls a 1-2, it's so Funny, you go Insane. Lose all Sanity and go to Arkham Asylum. You receive no Elder Signs for the Funny, and two Monsters and Nyarlathotep spawn along with a Gate to Milwaukee at the Cave.

It's got die rolling aplenty (strike 1)
It's very heavy in theme (strike 2)
It's published by FFG (strike 3)

I re-read The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy every couple of years. I've seen the extended DVDs of Peter Jackson's films more times than I can count without going shoeless like a hobbit. I grew up playing Risk and Axis & Allies. And it's by the same designers as Marvel Heroes (above). What's not to like?

Fizzbin? Arkham Horror? AMATEURS! Forget HeroQuest, Treasures and Traps and all those other light, easy to learn and play dungeon crawls. This game gives you the complete fantasy RPG experience without the dungeon master. Of course, even the streamlined, fan edited Third Edition Rules are still thicker than the rulebook from the D&D Basic Set.

Since I've mentioned Axis & Allies, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention this - especially since I am fortunate enough to be one of its playtesters! I'm glad Mike Selinker is one of its designers. He amazed me with 3rd Edition Axis & Allies by taking a good game and making it even better. With this he's taking a game that was somewhat disappointing and made it shine! Remember the Eagle Games tag line of "The Games You've Always Dreamed Of?" This promises to be the Attack! you've always dreamed of!

Now in it's third edition, this politically incorrect "screw your neighbor" game is a blast. Much of the game is political - each player is the head of a powerful and corrupt family running a poor banana republic trying to vote for the budget that will funnel the most foreign aid money into their Swiss bank accounts.

But beware! Each player also holds a cabinte position with control of some of the tiny nation's military or police forces. Frustrated cabinet members can start a coup, causing a wargame-within-the-game to break out that may shake up who's in charge and lines the losers up for the firing squad after the dust settles. Evil, devious fun.

This does have a complicated ruleset, nice bits and it's very long. However, it has some euro influences in it (the strategy cards and victory points in particular come to mind).

I play mostly euros, but I really like this game. Too bad the length of the game is off-putting for most of my friends, so it doesn't get to the table more often.

If were to streamline this to a more euro game, the first thing I'd probably do would be to make the ground force combat a simple exchange of units. It seems pointless to me to throw a lot of dice for combat between equal units. I know there are technology advances and the Shock troop option that makes the ground force units no longer equal, but there are other ways to implement this without the need for dice.

If you make this game even more of an AT game, you could do the exact opposite and create different ground force units (Soldier, Combat vehicle, Mech, etc.) which would at least make the dice throwing relevant for ground combat and make it mirror the space battles more.

Two more tables and another day later... I would love this game.

Whatever kind of game it is (I'm guessing Ameritrash is pretty vague, at best) it still rocks.

While this game came out after the Ameritrash debates, the mechanisms seem so fantastically Euro that I tend to clump it with games like Imperial or Liberte. It's rife with resource and hand management, conflict is resolved via bidding, etc. In fact it has one of the coolest bidding mechanisms since the combat wheels in Dune.

Last I heard, Dune was generally considered Ameritrash too.

Many wargammer's don't like this game... I love it, and I am ameri-trash all the way. The designers specifically stated in an interview that it is a war game for people who like boardgame's (and they work for FFG so we all know what they mean by "people who like boardgames"). Not sure what category that is but I'm content to hear it called both Ameritrash and Wargame.

Awesome, awesome game though. Waiting on a new scenario editor.

this is much more AT than wargame, mostly in that it is more like an action packed war movie than a realistic simulation.

keep in mind the fact that there is supposedly a scenario book coming out featuring designs from the likes of berg, simonitch and jason matthews. that should establish some wargame cred!!

I think this game occupies a middle ground between wargames and AT. What I've read from grognards; whose opinions I value, is that the game itself is solid. It's the lack of balanced scenarios that really hamper the game from getting wider acceptance. Tide of Iron: Days of the Fox addreses this somewhat but its the upcoming scenario book that can really make the difference.

I'm keeping an eye on ToI as I think the game has a lot of unrealized potential.

One of the great things about the 2005 edition of this game is that it comes with 2 completely different rules sets, which means that you essentially get 2 games in one box. The "Conquest of the Empire: Classic" game rules are quite basic, but the "Conquest of the Empire II" game rules are a little more involved and certainly push it up to the same level of complexity as Attack! Deluxe Expansion and Ikusa. (In fact, I was expecting that if anyone had an issue with complexity, it would be regarding Ikusa. Despite the size of the rulebook, it's a fairly straight-forward "build and bash" type of game.)

I disagree. This is heavy. Any Ameritrash game that comes with a 30+ page rulebook and is divided into sub-sub-sub sections would qualify, imo. This game covers both of those requirements.

/plus it takes hours upon hours to play
//plus the rulebook is a challenge to completely memorize.
///fark?

It could certainly be argued both ways (see my reply to Tom under the Conquest of the Empire entry above). But I tend to agree with Dan that all those factors together qualify it as "Heavy AT".

This game is the definition of Ameritrash.

Heroscape is singularly responsible for oil rising to $120 a barrel... this has more gobs of plastic terrain, figures and dice than just about any other game out there and a great range of minis... cowboys, Samurai, dragons, Roman Legionnaires, Vikings, WWII soldiers, Ninjas and Hot Lava Death... what more could you ask for in an Ameritrash game?

Ah thanks for this memory. My high school mates and I played the living hell out of Battletech.

Missile packs were my favourite weapon. I just loved rolling for hit locations and peppering an enemy mech all over the place. Of course this wasn't highly effective - but boy was it fun.

I still have this in deep storage along with 3-4 Tech Readouts. My boys will ready for this soon.

And those Head Hits, Man you could get towelled all day long but one head hit to take out your best mates Atlas and you were happy for a week!

This was a long, long game. I remember when I was at the battletech club at middle school (yes, that really rocked!), we had a campaign that took the whole school year, and we still didn't get finished. 30 some mechs against a slew of stuff. It was awesome, but way too long. I haven't tried the new mechwarrior, but it turned me off. It was too simple. I need something in the middle.

I know that it's old and my copy is a folio game, but when I look at the vast rules, the complexity of gameplay, the disparity of the armies, the 96 different items to roll for per turn, the 55 different items to roll for every battle, the colored map with 20 different charts printed on it, the intensive order of battle, the incredible differences from the first Crusade to the third, and the general subject matter, it makes me blink in shock and say, "dang, maybe I don't want to play this game."
However, many others on BGG clap their hands in glee and say, "I can't wait to try out that game! What do I need a weekend for?!"
This post does make me feel old and out of place though...see...this game uses chits, not those new-fangled shinny pretty things that all look alike.

Many of the items on this list so far are not "heavy" at all. But this one is. A unit of game time = 0.4 seconds. A dense, 36 page rule book describes the many options open to your character on each time slice. By Richard Hamblen, who also designed Magic Realm.

"Beyond the setting sun lay the cedar-felling ax, the buffalo's huge Babylonian face, Brigham Young's top hat and populous marriage bed, the red man's ceremonies and his wrath, the clear desert air, the wild prairie, the elemental earth whose nearness made the heart beat faster, like the nearness of the sea."
