A bunch of new rules and a very nicely designed map and set of goods and demands. Also available as a computer game.

I did design a China Rails game, which played really well. Mayfair wasn't interested though...

There are two versions of this. The second edition has a new deck of demand cards and some slight tweaks to the map. It's much more balanced and encourages east/west deliveries, which were unprofitable in the first edition.

When, oh when are you going to release the updated version of this Mayfair? Originally slated for 2003, it keeps getting put back. I want it to teach my children geography, but at this rate it will be the Grandchildren ???

An elegant and well-designed Russian game. It includes two-part events and the Fall of the USSR.

And by far my least favorite (I haven't played Russian, Lunar, or Australian, the last of which is often considered the weakest in the series).

In my opinion, this is the best one for playing 2 player. And I wish they would release this is a box. I can't stand the tube format!

North American Rails is a variant in its own right, not merely a re-release of Empire Builder. The card deck, map and load locations are different. The releases are:

Empire Builder (USA and Canada)
North American Rails (USA, Canada, Mexico)
Empire Builder revised (USA, Canada, Mexico)

Anyone designed their own maps/versions of this series(not just rules variants)?

I created a New York City map that takes only about half as long to play. There's a shareware map editor that makes the job easy, and can print out multi-panel map pages, demand contracts, load tables, etc. It can be found and downloaded at http://www.railgamefans.com/ebp
