I've been amazed to see the sheer number of recorded plays many games get by certain individuals. I thought it would be an interesting exercise to contact the people with the most recorded plays for each of the top 50 ranked games on this site to find out what makes the games so replayable for them, and whether they plan on continuing to play them.

Thanks so much to all of the people who responded - which was most of them! It was fascinating for me to read your responses. For those who couldn't respond, I looked for their personal comments on the game in question if there were any.

I have listed the names of the users with the most recorded plays for each game, along with their avatar if they have one, which itself will link to the user's profile page.

Note that some of these people have logged plays for online play in addition to face-to-face play, which I didn't discriminate against.

I was planning on including a list of the top 5 or 10 people with the most plays for each game, but alas, the BGG upgrade of a week ago changed my plans, as there is no longer any way I know of to get this information (easily at least). But fortunately, I had contacted each of the people listed here before the upgrade, and could still look up their current play counts, which are stated as of today's date (July 20th, 2008). If you also have a high play count for any of these games, please feel free to add your own comments and answers to my questions for that game.

UPDATE: I just created a second list which continues this format with the next 50 top ranked games:

I will try to answer your questions and hope this will be understandable as my English is not perfect at all

What do you like the most about Age of Empires 3?

First of all I like a theme of the game a lot. I also like a lot mechanic of the game in which you choose a ?worker? and put him on the proper place where he will make a certain action. Grate thing about the game is that it can be played well with any number of players, from 2 to 6. But one thing to mention is that when playing with less number of players you feel like you have more control over what you do, the more players the less control of the game and the flow. Very important thing for me is also that the game looks so grate and the components are done so well. Whole outlook, artwork of the games is very important for me. I just don't like playing games which don't look nice Game plays quite fast too, depending from the number of players. 2 players can make it in 45 min what is very good also.
I should also mention that very nice thing about the game is that it is very easy and fast to learn others the rules. They catch the game quite fast.

What do you currently rate this game (from 1 to 10)?

I currently rank this game 9.7. But I think I will lower the rank now as I don?t play this game so often as I used to.

Do you think you'll be playing much more of it in the future?

I'm sure I will not be playing the game so often as before. When I got the game I was playing even 3-4 games on some day (record is 7 games one after another during the night!). But I'd like to mention that 80% of my all games played in AoE are 1vs1 duels (hard to get more players for me usually? ) As with every game you get bored a little with it after some plays. I'm willing to play this almost any time, but not like in the days before that we played one game after another.
Also, when I get a new game and when I find out I like it a lot then I usually play it till the moment I get almost tired of it and when I think I caught all the nuances of the game.

Why do you think this game is so replayable? In other words, what keeps you from getting bored with it after so many plays?

Game almost lacks randomness. The problem with those kind of games is that every game plays almost similar to the previous ones. The only random factor in AoE is the moment when you draw new resources and when you make a new discovery. This is enough to make every game feel really different then previous ones. The most important thing about the game is that my mates like it a lot and they ask to play it quite often when they came to my place.

What is your favorite game of all time?

It's hard to choose one favorite game of all time as new good games are released quite often and old games just get bored (as most thing in life unfortunately?). I think I should just mention the games I played most. The first one is Survive! which I got when I was 7 from my father. This is very simple but fun game with a lot of interaction. Even that it is very easy and involves dice rolling (which I don?t like to much) this game is still sometimes played by us as few of my mates think it's my best game? :/? yes, they don?t? like deep thinking and long games . I think I played this game around 300-400 times. Next two games I played really are: RftG which is my only full 10 rank here on BGG. This game really shines, can play it any time as for now I have already more then 200 games recorded so far. Second one is Puerto Rico which used to be played very, very often and sometimes I still play it after so long time from the moment I got it. I recently got finally Agricola and after around 10 games I think it is a total hit! Really. Maybe it will make it for 10 rank too, we'll see.
The game I think is really grate but didn't have many opportunities to play it is StarCraft.
One last thing. I record all the games I play on sheets of paper to make statistics as I love them.

What do you like the most about Imperial?

Toughness to master.

What do you currently rate this game (from 1 to 10)?

9

Do you think you'll be playing much more of it in the future?

Every game is different. I've seen every country win and no one strategy seems to be dominant. All strategies can be countered with good play.

What is your favorite game of all time?

What do you like the most about Ticket to Ride?

I enjoy playing the game with new people. It's a very easy one to play with students at my game club each year, and a very easy one to teach for summer school classes. It is one of the games I have multiple copies of.

What do you currently rate this game (from 1 to 10)?

Perhaps I'd rate the game an 8. A few of the other games of the series have taken it to a more interesting level for me. However, I still would stick with this one when it comes to playing with new people.

Do you think you'll be playing much more of it in the future?

As long as I'm teaching, I'll still play it I'm sure.

Why do you think this game is so replayable? In other words, what keeps you from getting bored with it after so many plays?

The game is fast and easy to learn. Another good quality of a game for me is when the game also allows us to laugh and socialize while we are playing.

What is your favorite game of all time?

My favorite game? Oh boy. Like asking me my favorite movie. I just can't pick one at any time. Games that come to mind are Blood Bowl (well over 1000 plays), Arkham Horror, Fury of Dracula, and I'm currently enjoying Nefertiti. Ask me tomorrow and my list will probably be different.

What do you like the most about Memoir '44?

I like that it is essentially a 2-player game of reasonable depth as so many on the market are light 'filler' style games. It is always easy to find a mate to play Memoir with so it doesn't sit on the shelf because I can't get the numbers.

What do you currently rate this game (from 1 to 10)?

It is currently rated as a 10 and has been at that level for 2+ years. For me the BGG wording is completely accurate - 'Outstanding. Always want to play and expect this to never change'.

Do you think you'll be playing much more of it in the future?

Most certainly. I am currently involved in 3 different series with friends and family where I will play them once in each of the scenarios. We then tally up the scenario wins to see who was the stronger player over the whole journey. Really good fun.

Why do you think this game is so replayable? In other words, what keeps you from getting bored with it after so many plays?

There are many elements that make Memoir '44 highly replayable. First it is scenario based so each game can be totally different and pose different problems to solve. The time frame is also great at roughly 1 hour if each player plays both sides of an engagement. The mechanics are top notch for a light-medium game and Memoir now has 4 expansions which help keep it totally fresh.

What is your favorite game of all time?

Almost an impossible question to answer. In truth I have favourites in different categories or genres as I find it totally impossible to compare games of different genres when they scratch completely different gaming itches. I rate Tichu, Saint Petersburg and Memoir as 10's on the BGG scale - all are from different genres. Stone Age may well replace Saint Petersburg as my favourite Euro.

Wow, hard to believe I have the most plays. That fact does not look good for the games popularity as I only play a few times a month. I also have to confess I believe 6 of my plays were face to face and the rest are on WarGameRoom.com. WarGameRoom is a online board game site with java client for many games. All played in real time against other people, no bots.

What do you like the most about 1960: Making of a President?

1960 does a great job of capturing the feel of a presidential election. I think my favorite part of the game is the debate. In the led up to the debate you have to trading off good cards for a shot at winning or burying bad cards putting the election in jeopardy. I also love the way the card text gives you a sense of the history of the period.

What do you currently rate this game (from 1 to 10)?

7.5. I like the game and will always play it if someone asks and may suggest it to someone who I think would like it but it is not one of my all time favorites.

Do you think you'll be playing much more of it in the future?

I am playing in the WarGameRoom 1960 league. This means I will be playing a game every two weeks for the next month or so and I will most likely make the playoffs which means another 16 weeks of league play. I have not decided if I want to do next years league but most likely I will so I will be playing every two weeks for some time to come. Other than the league I don?t see playing it much. All my normal face to face opponents have tried it and are not eager to play again.
I may go play it a few times just to keep my top spot as I am not ahead by much.

Why do you think this game is so replayable? In other words, what keeps you from getting bored with it after so many plays?

The game is moderately complex and it takes a few plays to get to know the cards and the flow of the game. The large number of cards and the changing tactics of different opponents have kept the game pretty fresh for me. I played it a bunch when preparing for the league to be able to complete a game in the 1:30 time limit of league rules. I can't say enough good things about the WarGameRoom. The availability of opponents and the speed of online play is great. Also I am guessing at 35 plays it must be one of the least played top 50 games.

What is your favorite game of all time?

Puerto Rico is my favorite of all time. Twilight Struggle is a close second which is what made me interested in 1960 to begin with. I was somewhat disappointed that 1960 did not have the tension that I really love in Twilight Struggle but there are many things I have come to appreciate about 1960. Over Christmas I played 1960 with my mom which is not something I would have considered with TS.

What do you like the most about ASL?

The incredible scope of the game. Virtually every theatre and action of WW2 is covered, from the well known Eastern Front, where you can truly experience the battle of titans with 'Red Barricades', to the obscure, with scenarios based on the war between the Vichy French & Japanese in Vietnam, or conflict between the Siamese army and French Colonial Troops.Whilst primarily a game of squad level infantry combat, the system incorporates armour, vehicles, paratroops, gliders, amphibibous assaults, war in the desert, jungle warfare, night battles and virtually every weapon that was utilised during the period 1936 -1950.

What do you currently rate this game (from 1 to 10)?

It's the only 10 in my collection of over 500 games for a good reason. If the knob went to '11', then this game would get the 'Spinal Tap' treatment.

Do you think you'll be playing much more of it in the future?

This is the one coming to the retirement home with me! While I have reduced my annual games from 20-30 to around 10 in the last couple of years, whenever I come back to the game, the enjoyment levels always go off the scale.

Why do you think this game is so replayable? In other words, what keeps you from getting bored with it after so many plays?

There are thousands of scenarios, as well as design your own situations, and each one represents a unique puzzle to solve. How are you going to achieve victory, and keep the highest number of your troops alive? Real war is something too horrible to contemplate, but in ASL you can experience some of the tension, excitement and often agonizing decisions that the squad leader must face in reality...and nobody gets hurt...although your butt cn go numb after a particuarly gruelling session.

What is your favorite game of all time?

I recently had an absolute blast playing a scenario called 'Shanghai in Flames', set in China in 1937. It had my favourite ASL troops, the Japanese facing some tough Chinese defenders in fortified buildings, with half the board on fire and hand to hand combats going on in burning rooms and pillboxes. The game came down to the last melee die roll on the last turn for a Japanese victory...what a game!

What do you like the most about Samurai?

Great game for gamers and non-gamers alike.

What do you currently rate this game (from 1 to 10)?

7.9

Do you think you'll be playing much more of it in the future?

I'm sure I will play more. I have taught this game to my co-workers. So that is what has boosted my amount of plays. They always request it and we're all trying to perfect our strategies. It makes the perfect lunchtime game.

Why do you think this game is so replayable? In other words, what keeps you from getting bored with it after so many plays?

Same as above, I'm always trying out different little strategies. Also, I enjoy teaching to new players, although after so many plays I need to adjust my play to make it fair, or point out some strategies to the noobs.

What is your favorite game of all time?

Favorite game of all time? Thats' a rough question cause I think it tends to change now and then. My current favorite right now is El Grande or Shogun.

600 games played. Abstract and solitary cards game but quick and enjoyable on BSW.

Records : 95 (3 joueurs, le 19.09.2007), 92, 90, 89, 87, 87

IRL : 11 - BSW : 580

EDIT: Added late feedback from Patrick.

What do you like the most about Notre Dame?

Like Bridge, it's a management game that can be played quickly, at least on BrettSpielWelt. Caylus, for example, is way too long and repetitive for my taste.

The thing I don't like about Notre Dame is the lack of interaction.

What do you currently rate this game (from 1 to 10)?

Between 7 and 8.

Do you think you'll be playing much more of it in the future?

It is a good game until you discover how to play it right. After that,
the game is over, at least for me. If you need hundreds of tentatives,
the game has a fairly decent living time.

Why do you think this game is so replayable? In other words, what keeps you from getting bored with it after so many plays?

At a time, I played a lot on BSW where it plays fast, but some played it a lot more than me. I was looking for a winning strategy and I found it. My scores were consistently in the range 60-85 (71 in average for my 100 last plays). When playing against players following the same strategy, the winner is decided by luck of the draw.

What is your favorite game of all time?

My favorite games are Bridge and Netrunner, and possibly T&E and Twilight Struggle.

What do you like the most about Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation?

I like how it is easy to learn, yet has a lot of subtle strategies that one can master through extended play. I like how each side is completely different; yet perfectly balanced. I like the playability of the game, I have both versions and have managed to create a "deluxe travel edition" using components from each. That portability combined with the amazingly short play time make it a game I can take out anywhere.

What do you currently rate this game (from 1 to 10)?

I rate it a 10, I can't get enough of it.

Do you think you'll be playing much more of it in the future?

Heck yes!

Why do you think this game is so replayable? In other words, what keeps you from getting bored with it after so many plays?

See answer one. It's short. Also, there are a variety of different gameplay strategies that one can adapt over the course of play. The deluxe characters add even more depth. Finally, there is just enough luck to make it so the better player won't win ALL of the time, just MOST of the time. That keeps things interesting.

What is your favorite game of all time?

I greatly enjoy war of the ring. The reason it doesn't have a 10 for me isn't due to its quality, it is because it is so freaking long. I am rarely in the mood for long games, but when I am, WotR is always a good choice.

What do you like the most about San Juan?

It is mildly reminiscent of M:tg. I really enjoy Puerto Rico and SJ translates it well into card format. With two children we don't always get time to play longer games, but we try to make time for some gaming. SJ fits the bill.

What do you currently rate this game (from 1 to 10)?

Looks like it is currently an 8. The rating is dated - looks like I should revisit some of my ratings. I rate games fairly literally according to the BGG suggestions. I love San Juan. If I'm still playing it in 5 years I'll bump my rating to a 10.

Do you think you'll be playing much more of it in the future?

I've slowed down with this game. Karen (BGG userid = okgal) got Attika from her Secret Santa this year (THANKS! SS) That has been out 2-player game of choice lately. Since our move from CA to OK (Grapes of Wrath in reverse...) we've played 2-player games and the 2 games our in-laws will play (Skip-bo and Ticket to Ride) We were fortunate to discover two board game groups this year. Both groups have been bringing SJ out recently, so I suspect I'll be playing a healthy amount of it.

Why do you think this game is so replayable? In other words, what keeps you from getting bored with it after so many plays?

There are a two main strategies, purple or production, so you'd think the game might get stale after a while. There are so many different ways to execute each strategy. SJ also has some fun card combos - some are less efficient than others, but they are fun to try just the same. I let the cards dictate what strategy I'm going to try and I try to make the best use of the cards I get. You won't always have the bombs. So the interesting thing for me is looking at each openeing hand and trying to find the best way to play.

The game has a different vibe with different numbers of players. That adds a lot to replayability.

The game is a lot of fun too.

What is your favorite game of all time?

M:tg. Hands down. Power Grid is my favorite board game.

What do you like the most about Amun Re?

I like the auction mechanism for getting provinces and it's great when you can fulfill more than one power card for the scoring round.

What do you currently rate this game (from 1 to 10)?

8 (rating reflects in-person plays)

Do you think you'll be playing much more of it in the future?

Definitely

Why do you think this game is so replayable? In other words, what keeps you from getting bored with it after so many plays?

There are a lot of different strategies to try and the order of the province auction can keep things interesting. 5 players is the best.

What is your favorite game of all time?

It's a tough call... Tichu if there are 4 players, otherwise it's Age of Steam.

I own Amun Re but most of my plays are online at SpielByWeb where you can play against a lot of different people.

I was surprised that I was the one with the most plays for Hammer of the Scots. I imagine that there are others who have played more, but haven't logged them on BGG. I've been faithful at keeping my plays here online; I even moved my data over from MS Excel spreadsheets from past years. I have played in Hammer tournaments at the World Boardgame Championships ( www.boardgamers.org ) and at Block Party ( http://www.ohiovalleygamers.org/nationalblockparty.html ) as well as online using ACTS ( http://acts.warhorsesim.com ) to keep track of the cards and roll dice.

What do you like the most about Hammer of the Scots?

Hammer of the Scots is a light, fast war game. It is quite balanced (especially with bidding for sides) with a lot of tension. It is easy enough that I can play with my twelve year old son as well as deep enought to play wrenching tournament games with great opponents that leave you drained. I think the Mel Gibson Braveheart movie helps give the setting/scene so people can relate to the game.

What do you currently rate this game (from 1 to 10)?

I rate Hammer of the Scots a 9; though I could be persuaded to make it a 10. I only give two games (my very favorite) a 10 (We the People and Union Pacific)

Do you think you'll be playing much more of it in the future?

I would imagine playing HotS for years to come; I expect to continue playing online, at tournaments and other games.

Why do you think this game is so replayable? In other words, what keeps you from getting bored with it after so many plays?

The English and Scots have different problems to contend with. This along with the card play and levy draws keeps the game from being static. Being able to play a variety of opponents online also helps keep the game fresh as each opponent has a different strategy / perspective.

What is your favorite game of all time?

My all-time favorites are We the People and Union Pacific. Twilight Struggle and Hammer of the Scots would be close runners up.

What do you like the most about Wallenstein?

There are several things that make Wallenstein a unique gaming experience:
The cube tower`s memory. If you`re unlucky once, bigger chance of luck next time.
Simultaneous action selection means no downtime.
It`s a wargame with Euro-mechanics.
Great historical setting, and I love games with a good historical setting.
Beautiful map and excellent components in general.
With experienced players, it can be finished in under 2 hours.

What do you currently rate this game (from 1 to 10)?

A perfect 10.

Do you think you'll be playing much more of it in the future?

I will keep on playing Wallenstein in the future, but mostly on Spielbyweb, because most of my friends are getting a bit bored with it.

Why do you think this game is so replayable? In other words, what keeps you from getting bored with it after so many plays?

The one thing that draws me towards playing this game repeatedly, is the fact that you draft which provinces you`ll start with before every game. No game is the same! But this also can lead to a quite unfair start, with one player well tucked away in the rich pro vinces of southern Kurpfalz, and another player stuck in the middle in Sachsen. You may lead the game after the first year when you`re stuck in the middle, but you will very rarely win. There should have been some kind of balancing element, but I have yet to come up with the perfect houserule to fix this problem. The basic set-up that comes with the game is really bad and unfair. The basic set-up also takes away the excitement with the province drafting.

What is your favorite game of all time?

I would have to say Wallenstein. Milton Bradley`s Axis and Allies got me into gaming in the 80`s, and I still love to look at the game, but the mechanics are a bit outdated.
I love so-called 'Waros' / 'Weuros' (I am afraid of writing these words, because some people get really angry when reading them), basically they are wargames with typical European / German mechanics. There are not many of them, but hopefully there will be more in the near future.
Games I always want to play are:
Age of Empires III Age of Discovery
Mare Nostrum
Joan of Arc
A Game of Thrones
Warrior Knights
Twilight Imperium III
Conquest of The Empire II
Imperial
Antike
Vinci
Heroscape
Memoir 44
Perikles
Yspahan (great little filler)
Twilight Struggle
Axis and Allies Europe

I prefer games where you have the option to deal with your opponents in a military manner. I also love good components and miniatures. Go Eagle Games, Days of Wonder and Fantasy Flight Games!

What do you like the most about Taj Mahal?

Taj has one of the most original mechanics with the "withdraw and win with your current majority". The game is difficult which makes it highly replayable.

What do you currently rate this game (from 1 to 10)?

I think I rate it a 9. The game is beautiful, and is a fantastic blend of mechanics, but if ever a tacked on theme there was Taj Mahal is one because...

Do you think you'll be playing much more of it in the future?

Absolutely, I'm getting better at it.

Why do you think this game is so replayable? In other words, what keeps you from getting bored with it after so many plays?

It's got a random set up, so the board is always different. It's got set collection and bluffing, and many ways to score.

What is your favorite game of all time?

2-player is Chess, Multi player is Princes of the Renaissance (Martin Wallace)

I find it shocking that I have the most plays in this game. It's a wonderful game, but certainly not the most played game in our group.

What do you like the most about Up Front?

Agility, fast play. Players turns take less than a minute. It makes for a very dynamic game.

What do you currently rate this game (from 1 to 10)?

9.5 The rules need to be updated.

Do you think you'll be playing much more of it in the future?

Possibly if the rules are updated.

Why do you think this game is so replayable? In other words, what keeps you from getting bored with it after so many plays?

There are 22 official scenarios, playable with 2 sides. Each side can be one of the 7 nations available to play. That alone is a lot of variations. Even playing the same scenario with the same nations, the gameplay options are so diverse that no two games are alike.

What is your favorite game of all time?

What do you like the most about Tide of Iron?

I love scenario specific goals, unbalanced scenarios and the variety of the different units. Why unbalanced scenarios? I love to play as the underdog and have a real challenge. If I win, WOW! If not, I gave it my best and I had fun trying. It goes back to pretending that I was making the game winning shot at the buzzer in our driveway half-court. The thrill of the long-shot!

What do you currently rate this game (from 1 to 10)?

Currently, I have it as a "10", but this may change to a "9" soon. Not that I think any less of the game, but I'm in the process of changing my rating system and I think it may drop under my new guidelines. These guidelines are harsh!

Do you think you'll be playing much more of it in the future?

I certainly hope so! If I could find someone to come over often and request to play this with me or if I knew someone that lived close-by that would be available at the drop of a hat that loves Tide of Iron, I'd play this game as often as possible.

Why do you think this game is so replayable? In other words, what keeps you from getting bored with it after so many plays?

There are many different scenarios out there, so there are a lot of different ways to play the game. On top of that, how an opponent sets up their squads adds countless variables to those scenarios. On top of even that, where your opponent sets up their pieces and how they play varies each scenario at a near incalculable rate! Sweet!
