This game is based on the previous 4 One Degree geeklists, but entries on those lists won't count for this one.

Previous Lists:

http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/20588 The Original

http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/21110 The Deuce

http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/22104 Number Three

http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/31428 Number Four

http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/32153 Number Five

From a randomly-selected song, we take a word from the artist or title, and find another song where that word is matched in the title or artist.

Examples:
"The Beatles - Nowhere Man" to "Joe Diffie - Bigger than the Beatles"
"The Beatles - Nowhere Man" to "Billy Joel - Piano Man"

That's the basics, but there are some rules to it:

The Rules:

Thumb Rule

To participate this competition, you must give this list a thumbsup. This is to keep the geeklist on the front page of the "Hot Geeklists" longer and give more people a chance to play.

Consecutive Entries

You may post entries 2 times consecutively.

Valid Entry Formatting

Items must be SONGS in the form Artist - Song Name or Song Name - Artist. Please make it clear which is the song and which is the artist. Also, put the link word in bold, italics, caps, or something so we know which word you used when you linked it (Especially important if 2 or more links could have been used.)

Valid Entries

Entries must be songs. They may not be album names. Songs must be published works to be eligible for the list. They must appear on this geeklist as they appear in the artist's official discography, website, or album. Classical music must cite the name of the piece and the composer.

Item Repetition

You may not use any one song/artist combination more than once. (Covers can be used of songs already listed, But not linked directly from the original.)

Artist Repetition

You may NOT link a song from an artist to another song by the same artist using the artist as the link. If the song has a word in common with the artist, it may be used. Example:

"Iron Maiden - 2 Minutes to Midnight" to "Iron Maiden - Run For The Hills" is not legal.
Iron Maiden - 2 Minutes to Midnight" to "Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden" is. (Yes, Iron Maiden did a song called Iron Maiden.)

Cover (Remake) Repetition

you may NOT link a song to a cover of the same song by a different band. (Songs that are not covers of one another, but happen to share the same title, are permissible.)

Example: The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby to Godhead - Eleanor Rigby is illegal, as Godhead's song is a remake of the Beatles song. However, Johnny Cash - Orange Blossom Special to Charlie Daniels Band - Orange Blossom Special IS legal, because even though they have the same name, One song is not a remake of the other.

Parodies, however, are valid.

Different Versions of Same Song

You may NOT link a song to the remix/live/edited version of itself.

Flip-Flop Artist/Song Combo (Please Read This One!)

You may not "Flip Flop", that is, Go from artist to a song title, then back to that same artist. For instance:

"The Beatles - Nowhere man" to "Joe Diffie - Bigger Than the Beatles" to "The Beatles - Taxman" is illegal.

Link Word Repetition

The link word can be used no more than 3 times in a row. Example:

"The Beatles - Nowhere Man" to "Billy Joel - Piano Man"
"Billy Joel - Piano Man" to "Elton John - Rocket Man"
"Elton John - Rocket Man" to "Alan Jackson - Little Man"

After that, "Man" is dead, and the next player will have to link to the remaining words in the last song. In this case, "Alan", "Jackson", or "Little." the word "Man" can be used later.

Compound Words

Compound words can be broken up, and one of the component words used in the link.

"The Beatles - Taxman" to "Billy Joel - Piano Man"

Words that are not real words in english can be broken up if their root word is a real word. Example:

"Metallica - Seek and Destroy" to "Quiet Riot - Metal Health"

This could also work the other way around. However, it only works if the word you get out of it really IS a root word; Nowhere does not break down into "Now" and "here", for example.

Invalid Link Words

Links based on words such as "An", "the", "a", "at", "in", "on" and "and" are not permissible.

Example:

"The Beatles - Nowhere Man" to "The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black" is illegal, because it uses The as the link word.

Spelling, Tense, Plurality

The spelling, tense, and/or Plurality of the Link word isn't important for the most part. Exceptions include words whose spelling changes entirely with conjugation, such as "To Be." It may be easier to say that matches are Phonetic rather than literal. This is subjective and my final judgement counts, but I will be as fair and objective as i can be.

Numeric Links

Linking between songs using numbers is allowed. It doesn't matter if you link between a numeral and a word (for instance, "3" to "three") or part of a number to part of another number (2112 to 21, 12, or 11).

Game End and Winning

So that's pretty much it. Participants can come and go as they pretty well please.
The last person to post something that isn't challenged for 24 hours (Excluding site outages) will get the current pot of 2 GG from me, Plus any tips this Geeklist happens to collect along the way.

I AM AN IDIOT!

Now that that has been established I will explain. I saw this comment and thought, "Oh, no big deal. Someone got an entry in before mine so mine no longer linked. I will just delete my posts."

Of course, after doing so I realized that the posts renumbered and anything in the Wiki will now be off.

As penance I will go through every subsequent entry in the Wiki and update the numbers.

Sorry.

Hey Erik, I think several of us have expended enough brainpower on these games to deserve a "Degrees of Separation" competition geekbadge, dontcha think?

Edit:

PLEASE OH PRETTY PLEASE WITH SUGAR ON TOP REMEMBER TO ENTER YOUR ENTRY INTO THE WIKI!

The composer/original artist was Piero Umiliani, an Italian, and according to Spicks and Specks (an Aussie music quiz show), that song was first used in an Italian porn film. So I'd say it's not English.

I always heard it was Mah-Nah Mah-Nah performed by Giorgio Moroder, for the Swedish soft porn film Sweden: Heaven And Hell.

I have the 45.

OK, after some research (I love the internet!), I've come to the conclusion we're both right.

The song was written in 1968 by Italian Piero Umiliani - he titled it "Mah Nà Mah Nà", possibly he had a boat of that name (found one reference to that in my Googling).

It was used in (and probably written for, as Umiliani composed film scores for a living) a 1968 Italian soft porn mondo/pseudo-documentary by Luigi Scattini on sexuality in Sweden. Originally titled "Svezia, inferno e paradiso" (translated as Sweden: Heaven and Hell).

Giorgio Moroder probably did perform the song in the movie, as he recorded it in 1968. None of the links I found to the movie or the soundtrack mention it, though, only Umiliani as the composer.

It was used in a Sesame Street episode in 1969, and has featured in a number of Muppet skits since.
