So once a week I get to buy a six pack of beer invite some friends over enjoy a board game and a brew. I really like beer. There was a time when to much was the norm. Those times have passed, and beer is now the beverage you can talk about like a fine wine. There are beers for many occasions different tastes and aromas, beers for specific meals and times of day. I wanted to point out some of my favorites and maybe get some ideas on new labels to try.

I'll start with my hands down favorite, the cream of the crop. I wish this came in a six pack but they only sell it in a 32. Rogues' Hazelnut Brown Nectar. This beer is so good its like soda sometimes I forget its a beer at all. It's seriously that good. It isn't to hoppy or bitter and has a nice sweet malty flavor that isn't so dark you couldn't see through it with a flash light. Every chance I get I pick one of these up.

This was the first Rouge I had and I was blown away. So much flavor in an amber, When I first had this I had mainly been drinking lighter amber ales. This one come along and redefines the word.

Pintail Copper ale
Pintail was made by Bridgeport brewing in Portland, Oregon. Unfortunately they stopped making it a few years ago. I went looking for it last summer when I went back to Portland on vacation and discovered they discoed it. I was extremely bummed out. This was a nice lighter ale that had a light amount of hops and a nice crisp finish.
I like other Bridgeport brews they have a nice IPA that isn't to overwhelming but has a good bite. Their "beer town brown" is pretty good also.

Deschutes Brewing
From Bend, Oregon Probably my favorite collection of labels. Mirror pond is a great pale ale that is good with just about everything. Black butte porter is heavier with some nice sweet undertones and a good finish. Inversion is an IPA that isn't to overwhelming and Obsidian stout is a great dark beer that goes good with a hefty meal. I also like their twilight seasonal as a lighter beer to enjoy when it's the end of a hot day.

Ruination
A freind of mine told me about this one and gave me fair warning. This is one of the most bitter beers you will ever try. Think of the most bitter thing you have ever had and multiply by ten. The first drink practically burns your taste buds off then they grow back and the next isn't so bad by the third drink you can really taste this wonderful beer.

Small time pub breweries

This is mainly to point out my favorite pub/brewery. McMenamins pubs are scattered around Oregon from Troutdale to the coast. Each location is unique and has its own flavor. The one I frequented the most was in Troutdale Oregon called Edgefeild. Edgefeild was and old asylum converted into a hotel it has a pub a nicer sit down restaurant. A par three golf course on during the summer they put on free outdoor concerts. My wife and I had so much fun there. Pick up a pint and walk the grounds until you need another listen to some live music then eat. Such good times. Kennedy school is cool also, it's an old grade school were the gymnasium has been turned into a movie theater with comfy chairs and sofas. You can order food and drinks while you watch. There are many other in the area and I have gone to a few. The brew most of their beers on site.

Before I went to Europe, I was mostly an ale and dark beer drinker. Then I discovered what pilsners were meant to taste like. If you can find it, try Jever. I have the least trouble finding that one. There are so many to try, take you time and explore them all. Better yet, get to Oktoberfest. My wife and I went in 1998. Imagine a tent that can house 10,000 people. And a band that is sitting on a 15 foot tall pedastal. Then imagine them all drunk and singing the same song. Now take about 20 of those tents and you have Oktoberfest. There is a parade on the first day and beautiful women in dirndle dresses pour you beer in the middle of the street. At the end, the mayor taps the first keg and the party is on.

Oh, so go check out some German pilsners. Now.

Let me add a tip to your list:

On your next fall trip into Portland, stop by a Trader Joe's. For the last two years at least, they have sold under their own label a remarkable Belgian-style beer at a remarkable price.

The beer is basically Trois Pistoles, a brew from Unibroue in Canada. Usually retails in Oregon from $7.49-$8.99, and worth every penny. Reviews here:

http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22/30/

Under the Trader Joe's label, the beer has sold the last two years for $4.99. Limited release; when they're gone, tough luck. Usually in their stores starting late September-October. Your milege may vary. Do not enjoy before getting in the car to go back to Nampa.

After you are done enjoying German pilsners, go to The Czech Republic. Get a hold of Budvar, the first pilsner of the world. You can probably die happy after drinking that. When you are there, complain about how Budwieser stole their name and ruined beer for many people. You will fit right in.

Oh, then get something called The Velvet Revolution. Great, amazing beer. What are you waiting for? Go get some!

It's brewed with brown sugar, and ends up at about 9.9%. Great stuff.

My wife goes for a Köstritzer Schwarzbier whenever she can get it (which is only when we go out to our local ale house that has it on tap, since we can't find a place that sells it bottled). We first had this lovely black lager on our honeymoon, and the honeymoon isn't over for the brew for us. It has a much lighter feel and much less chocolately taste than most dark beers, which makes it a really interesting change of pace and more suited to my tastes which veer away from bocks and other malty brews. Very dark and very smooth.

No idea how useful this will be to most people reading the list, but if you're looking for good regional beers, then Michigan is the place to be. We have a huge microbrewery scene here. The unfortunate reality is that of my top 3, only one of them is very easy to find outside of the Mitten, still, if you run into these, check them out:

Founders.
Based in Grand Rapids, about 10 years old now. They are most well-known locally for their IPA, a perfectly tasty brew based on Centennial hops, from which it gets its name and Dirty Bastard, their Scotch Ale. Among beer geeks they're best known for their bigger, limited stuff though including Breakfast Stout, a coffee laced stout; Kentucky Breakfast Stout, an imperial stout aged in Bourbon barrels; Curmudgeon, an old ale aged in Bourbon barrels; and Devil Dancer, a triple IPA with 10 varieties of hops and a 13% ABV (sip those at home...). They make a huge variety of limited batch beers, and almost everything they release is solid gold.

Kuhnhenn.
AKA: the brewery in the hardware store in Detroit. The Kuhnhenn brothers converted their father's old store into a full brewery and they do some damn tasty beers. I've only had limited exposure to them, but my current favourite is their Creme Brulee Java Stout, a stout with caramel and vanilla flavours which is wonderfully smooth. They are probably most famous for their huge Raspberry Eisbock, a dessert beer if there ever was one, a huge sugary sweet raspberry bomb. They also do odd experimental beers, such as Ambers using Belgian yeast, and other stuff like that.

Short's.
Located near Traverse City, Short's has a reputation, like Kuhnhenn, for making exotic beers based on unique ideas. They have done beers using sunflower seeds, pales using grapefruit juice, and all sorts of oddball stuff. Their Hupa Lupa Licious IPA is in my Summer rotation as well, vaguely resiny flavour and quite unique.
