You can keep your Agricolas and your Puerto Ricos with their endless optimization strategies and brainburn. Those are too much like work, and not enough about "game". Me, I want to play a game that is fun. A game that I will enjoy. Not a game that takes minutes-hours just to recover from. I play for the fun and the sheer joy of it; it is not about who is better at game X for me. Presented below are some games that bring joy to me regardless of their "place" in the rankings.

I'll show you mine, so let me see yours.

I meant to add this one. It was one of the first games I had thought of when the idea for this list came up. Somehow, though, in compiling the entries Can't Stop got lost in the shuffle.

A great press-your-luck game in which you can learn quite a bit about people's personalities even as you have a good time. A real blast to play.

For your research:

the way this game can turn into Not-Fun is if the seams cause the cars to fly off the tracks randomly about half the time you flick them, so that you're reduced to simply moving your car about 8 inches each turn, in overexaggerated fear of your car jumping off the track.

IF this game allowed for regular movement of over 3 feet, I'd give it a wholehearted approval for this list.
But it is highly dependent on the set up of the track, and will likely require shims to be placed under each track piece to reduce the # of cars popping off the track.

The best way to handle this problem (and it can be a fun-killer) is to place business cards beneath the problem joints (run your finger over them while setting up the track, you can feel discrepancies). Business cards make the perfect equalizer for minor hiccups in the track. It is not perfect (it is a wood product...) but it really reduces the amount of wayward and maddening flicks.

That does sound un-fun, but we've never had this problem. We just add the leaf to our dining table, set up the track more of less randomly and go. I've never had this seam issue pop up.

I got this for $4 on clearance, mainly for the figures -- it's got great components. A little while back, a friend from out of town was here, and he helped me clear some games off my "owned, never played" list, including this one.

It turned out to be wild, random and way more fun than we expected. The combination of fairly clever rules, the wild swings that the dice bring to the game, excellent pieces and a silly theme are a surprisingly good mix -- and just plain fun is the perfect description.

Even more awesome when using all the bunnies from the expansions and scoring 3 points per bunnie nailed and adding the carrot numbers cumulatively from low to high, then the highest total wins. KB as a combat game for victory points? Journey to Jupiter is nearly halfway through publishing and Ultimate Odyssey has been announced... more bunnie to whack! ninja

Fun and cheap. For a few bucks for the pdf and a fistful of dice you'll have an evening of Star Trek-ian entertainment. This is a light shoot'em up space battle, but you'll need to use some tactics to win. Find Star Trek micro machines on ebay to add to the fun.

Big board? No! Play 4+ players on ONE board with the flags in a diagonally criss-crossing pattern so you're CONSTANTLY running into each other and causing robots to go off the board! (Play without limited "lives" or else players are gonna die off real quick.)

no surpirise at all.

Many do not enjoy it.

It's long, causes brain burn, has profound snowball effect, has excessive randomness, and can be incredible frustrating.

I do not like this game at all.
The brainburn was just brainburn, the randomness wasn't fun but just random, and the game becomes tedious after but a few turns. I sold it.

We play this regularely as an opener or closer on game nights.
It's always great fun to see an outragous bid go through, or a too safe one going around the table and biting the first player in the ###.gulp

I'd forgotten about this game, but it's 20 minutes of bluffing and pure zaniness. Last game I played we had 2 pretty much impossible bids (like 90% of the dice with more than 10 dice) that both were challenged and the bidder won. It's moments like that, where even though you lost the challenge, that the zaniness of the moment makes it where you can't help to laugh.

I just used Zaniness twice in that paragraph. I wonder if I'll be sent the English Class Hell for that.

I just got this game from a thrift store. I have to say for a 3 minute game, it's just plain fun. As a dexterity game, it can be pretty tough, especially when your opponent keeps knocking your animals off the trees.

Yes that's right Power Grid. How could a game this with this much math make it on the list? When playing with my family the deals and the curses fly. "Ya know I think I will buy some extra oil barrels so you can afford to power your plant." "We should really block off my Dad he is getting pretty close to winning." "HOAR-DER!" Always a lot of fun devil

Every time I start to think about seeking out Power Grid, someone posts something like this, and I again return to no interest. in PG, nor gaming with the poster.

I notice that your only comments on this list have been ones disagreeing with people's opinions on fun games in a semi-rude manner, and in this case, also with a mild verbal backhand at the poster. Maybe you should let people have their own opinions on what games they enjoy?

By the way, I'm ordering their new edition. The colors look much brighter and easy to distinguish from one another!

It took 51 entries before someone put this game on this list!? This is a top 10 fun game, easy! Tip...play with more people. Takes from 2 to 4, and the scale is with 2, you can easily get all your people to safety. 4 players means your lucky to get anyone safe.

Great List.

For me those fun games are essentially light-mid Euro's that light a spark in me after reading the rules.

Typically they are easy to learn and play in 40-80 minutes. Most importantly their rules are not hard to remember from one play to the next - important when you are the rules guy in your group and have over 300 games to consider bringing to club each week.

For me the following titles instantly spring to mind -

Kingsburg
Stone Age
Yspahan
Alhambra
The Hanging Gardens
Saint Petersburg
Race for the Galaxy
Last Night on Earth

Manilla is almost there but a few ambiguous rules don't help it stick in the memory for that next play.

Titles I hope to add to my collection soon -

Galaxy Trucker
The Downfall of Pompeii
Crokinole
Tumblin' Dice

I played my first game of this the other night. When someone pulled it out, I was a bit hesitant -- I'm not normally a fan of financial-themed games. But we had a blast playing it, and you're right -- lots of laughing out loud!

I wanted to add Yspahan, but I cannot see myself justifying that. Yes, it is fun. But, I am not sure that it has enough of that element for me to place it on this list. And I have played it a lot.
