Okay I've got one child. My precious baby girl. I have cared for her, bonded with her, and pretty much been over protective her entire life. This will not change. EVER. or at least till death do us...no that's the other one...what I mean is. She's 17 year old now and despite the numerous convent suggestions that my wife has ignored, boys are approaching my precious little girl. Now nature & instinct says just kill them and be done with it. But as many an overprotective father before me, there is my legacy Somebody must carry on the family, therefor I have to measure the suitors mettle. Now sure, like many fathers through the centuries before me, I could just take them out into the woods, and throw rocks at them until they admit they are evil scum who only want to take advantage of my daghters naivete. But I am a modern man, there is no need for physical threats. Instead, I will play games...

So we will start with something basic. Apples to apples. Very nice, mild party game, which gives away some key personality issues when you are the judge. Basic vocabulary, personal preferences, sense of humor. That kind of thing. Just as you can do well at apples to apples merely by knowing the personality of the judge, you can also learn much about a judge by watching what the pick. The best part is my daughter and her friends truly enjoy this game, so I could slip it in without anybody knowing it is a test.

TransAmerica with the vexation expansion. Now this game is beautiful. My daughter enjoys playing it, it is quick and easy to understand. Yet with the vexation expansion, it can tell a lot about how competetive a person is, and how well he acts to adversity. What does he do when somebody screws him over. whine? Complain? Take it in stride? Screw the person back only better? This is important to know about a person who may win my daughters heart away from me.

Just kidding. Still this is a very fun game. It may be obvious as a test when I target him every round. But, I think it would be very useful to see how he reacts to the game. And how much pressure makes him chicken out.

Okay, I have to admit this is a blatent test of personality. This is a game that takes LCR and expands on the bad parts. Anyway, he gets max points if he refuses to play. He gets a mid-range rating if he plays to humor me but is obviously not having any fun. He get's taken out to the woods to never return if he appears to actually be having fun.

One on one. brain to brain. Here is a chance to see how his mind works. Blatent test, but a good one. Does he put up a fight, or just let me win to appease? Can he beat me? Is he even interested? Can he talk trash mid-game to try and throw me off? Does he dare to? So many questions this game can answer.

Killer bunnies. This one is pretty much thown in for my wife. She likes the game. (and to be fair, I enjoy parts...mostly the middle part) But also this is another decent character test. You get to see how he stars. Does he focus on building himself up, hurting others, or both? Is he anything to win, or does he avoid certain people (say my daughter? or to try & score points myself?) How does he deal with the random end when all his work may or may not have paid off? What kind of comments does he make afterwords?

Actually the more I think about it, the more I like this game as a personality test. To me there is no right, or wrong reaction. But take a person who has never played killer bunnies, and you can actually learn quite a bit about him, and how he plays and what he likes just from a single game.

The final test. Although part of it is testing his upbringing. I know it is not his fault if he has never learned cribbage. Yet, if a relative plays & he doesn't, it shows an extreme lack of character on his part. Anyway, worst case scenario I will teach him the game. The point is I love cribbage, and it is a good indicator of creative problem solving. You get dealt a random hand, but with all the possiblities, what you make of the hand says alot about you. Or I just like the game & see alot more into it than I should. Either way, it's better if she meets a boy who can play cribbage.

Chess

i add this because my wife tells the story of the first time her now-psychotically-deranged-ex and her marine staff sergeant (two tours of duty in vietnam) ever met. my wife was about 19 and was Serious about this guy.

she says the moment the two men met her father looked him up and down.

"You play chess?" he asked.

Now psychotically-deranged-ex said he did.

And without another word between them, the two went to another room in the house and played Chess.

(Now psychotically-deranged-ex won by using a cheap trick of a gambit. My wife was appalled by the lack of integrity it showed, but her her marine staff sergeant father knew that a win is a win. personally, i think my wife should have gone with her gut instincts on this one, but...)

This one tests not just strategic thinking, but also flexibility, and willingness to sacrifice.

After all, when if he sacrifices only for trades, he's stuck in a chess mentality; he's going to slowly die...

If he sacrifices for better pieces, well, he's showing proper flexibility.

If he refuses to sacrifice, he's totally inflexible... time to walk the mud-flats... at low tide!

If he sacrifices for lower-value peices but key placement, he's thinking ahead. Good for him. Still, time to see if he falls for frisbee on the beach at low tide.

Easy to explain, easy to understand, vicious "personality test". What does he do? Does he rush his guys ahead only to shoot his wad and wander aimlessly adrift, trying to get more cards? Does he make pirate jokes and not take winning seriously? Does he tinker around until it's too late to be a contender for victory?

The way I see it is that the only way to satisfy the requirements is to have perfect timing. No useless bridges, no free cards. He needs to be patient, moving consistently towards his goal, and, at the end, finish it off with finesse.
