Some lady at the thrift store I got LOTR Risk at said she was looking for this for her son, and that she would have bought LOTR Risk if I didn't (and would have paid $8 and not checked it).

She said yeah, its out of print, Robber Baron sell for $150 if you can find it. I said 'Rail Baron'? (Thinking she didn't mean 1830, but would pick it up if she saw that one). She said no, its Robber Baron, I've been looking for it for years.

I read this and thought "Oh, man . . . she has a little boy who'd just love it! Give it to her!"

And then I read this . . .

And I thought "Oh, she has a grown man-child living in her basement, . . ." shake

MB Gamemaster Series. The Box is in rough shape from stacking, but otherwise solid. Haven't inventoried yet but looks pretty complete and in very good condition. However the rulebook is missing. Those darn missing rulebooks. $4.99 from my favorite local thrift store.

Anyone know how many games are in the MB Gamemaster series?

For those too lazy to click the link, there were 5 Gamemaster games:

Axis & Allies
Shogun (aka Samurai Swords)
Conquest of the Empire
Fortress America
Broadsides & Boarding Parties (the 'oddball' in that its box isn't the same form factor as the other four).

Broadsides and Boarding Parties feels more like it should have been a part of the Floor War Series; a series that seems to have only one game :-( (Although Carrier Strike seems to also feel like one of them I guess.) My guess is that they never really figured out how other games that mixed dexterity elements with placement worked. It was like - hey here is a great idea - we can make a series on it! (and then couldn't think of anything else...)

Saw this across the room, and almost ran over to grab it. My girlfriend had picked up a set before, but that was missing pieces and was in a horrible box.

This one had all 54 wooden pieces, box is in great shape, and was only missing four of the 30 bidding beans. $3.65 well spent. I'll combine it with my other set at some point, you can never have too many pieces!

Some games are perfect thrift store games.

What I mean -- there are some games that look interesting enough to own, but not interesting enough to actually, you know, buy.

Roundabout looks like one of those types of games. It's instantly recognizable as a backgammon knock-off; however, I love backgammon. I don't think I'd pull the trigger if I had to pay full price, but for $1.98, I was willing. Great bits. Great box. Great board. If the game sucks it will at least be cannibalized for prototypes.

Found the version pictured (at the left) for $1.48. This is the third copy of this I've found. I'll keep buying it because it's a great little game that can be set up on any kitchen table. One day when I have a whole room of kitchen tables, I'll be able to play three games at once.

At one time I also had this one:

but the paddles in that version were very cheap. Both of them broke (?).

Or maybe not so ingenious...

I was very pleased to see this sitting in the corner of the children's section at our local British Heart Foundation for £2.25, complete and looked as if it had been played only once or twice (probably an unwanted present from our TkMax £9.99 price blitz last Christmas)

However, walking home with my wife and carrying my booty with some of our weekly shopping, just as we met an acquaintence and started chatting the plastic bag containing a four-pack of beer gave way and out they dropped to the pavement...yikes...one of the cans got pierced and beer started shooting out everywhere! So what's a guy supposed to do? I drank it shot-gun style while my wife carried on chatting to our friend! While I thought I'd saved the day, when I got home I found some of the sprayed beer had gone into the booty bag and soaked the box cry

Oh well, it'll dry out

It was Subhan who found the underwear. That type of mistake will get you sent to the Box.

I DID find a "Death Cab for Cutie" single (actual vinyl 45) in the box. I gave it to one of my employees who got all excited.

I tend to be of the "I'm not old, your music just sucks" school of thought.

I was in Michigan and Ohio over the last few days, and between meetings I managed to make a few thrifting stops. The first was an antique mall, a really big one. I always enjoy wandering through big antique malls, just to look at the interesting stuff and rarely to buy. I picked up this game I'd never seen before for $3. The box is scuffed up, but decent. One scoring peg is broken. It's missing the rules. Otherwise it's in good shape for a game that involves mashing to win.

Heck, I'd buy it. Looks like it would be fun with my grandkids.

I picked this one up for $1.95 at Value Village. It's complete except on scoring "prize" base is missing. The contents are in good shape as is the box.

I got into the Games/toys section just in time to see a kid (about 9 YO) in the process of tearing up a box of glass Chess/Checkers/Backgammon game... And he was tearing it up to open it. I was shocked! Obviously, no parents around nor any employees... shake

And this is another reason I have to laugh when people call Portland the Thrifting Mecca. There are several Goodwills here where the toy aisle seems to serve as a drop-off day care center.

No, no, you're slightly mistaken. Some Goodwills operated as a "free store", where you're welcome to take something as long as you also drop something off. Clearly those children tired their parents out to the point where they figured they might as well trade 'em in for a nice end table or summer blouse.

Or a nice copy of Trivial Pursuit...

Eric,

Why didn't you use the Force?

Yes, but tempted I was to use the Dark side and crushing their throats with the Force... Resist, I did! laugh

EDIT: I'm tired, and for some reasons, it doesn't sound much of the joke I thought it would be. Sorry 'bout that.

Eh - looks like thrifting is once again out this week. All my thrift dollars went to paying for a sponsorship on the 2008 Plone Conference ( http://www.plone.org) and buying a HUGE (like about 14) Tiki mugs with other Tiki stuff (lights, coasters, mask, etc) for $50 - from a guy off Craig's List to further fleshout my Tiki bar. Maybe I'll get out to a couple of truly local haunts and see if I see anything. Oh I also just paid for the only couple of parts I needed for my Halloween costume: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/35249/item/753991#item...
