Solitaire War Games
-
There's a bunch of geeklists about solitaire games around already, but none is strictly about solitaire WAR games. Since users more frequently specifically ask for recommendations of solitaire war games than solitaire games in general, and having responded to at least five of such prompts, I decided to create this geeklist. I hope it will serve as a reference. Expansions are included in the base game entry only when they have separate BGG entries.
How this list is ordered:
1) Boxed games. In chronological order, but games which use the same or similar systems are listed in sequence.
2) Magazine games. Ordered alphabetically and by publisher.
3) Print'n'Play games. Disorder.
Since I virtually have no experience with Print'n'Play or Magazine games, I only list them without providing comments. I would be glad, if another user with more experience in PnP or Mag games added more entries or singled out a particular game listing it as an separate entry, but unfortunately the best I can do to express my gratitude for this is by giving a single lousy thumb-up.

Please also note that this list is strictly about war games which are primarily meant to be played solitaire. For example Up Front, although containing a few rules (or hints) on solitaire play, should not be on this list.
I also want to restrict this game on games about real or hypothetical wars (conflict simulations), so please leave fantasy or science fiction games off this list!

(I.e. update from me. Many thanks to all the people adding games!)

Don't forget Soviet Dawn, from VPG. A great little solitaire game with lots of tension and choices to be made.

Welcome to Field Commander: Napoleon, the third in the series of Field Commander games. The goal in designing this game system was to make the careers of some of history’s great commanders accessible in an easy to learn, fast playing game format. They decided on solitaire, because it had the proper feel. Commanders have staff and advisors, but in the end, they alone make the hard decisions that affect lives, change the course of campaigns, and decide the fate of nations.
In this game, you make all the decisions needed to command your Forces. The game rules, charts, and die rolls dictate the actions of the opposing forces.
Currently in playtesting: http://danverssengames.blogspot.com/2009/02/marengo.html
It's possible to pre-order in January 2010.

One of the few solitaire efforts published by Command magazine. Interestingly, this is a solitaire game that has extra rules to let you play two-player (just like Ambush! did).

Well, time to shamelessly plug my solitaire game about Allied paratroopers on D-Day.
The game started as a variant of Zombie in my Pocket, but grew big enough, and different enough, to warrant its own entry.
Rulebook and campaign book include historical notes, and many of the scenarios are based on actual battles. Also, all 65 weapons & items found in the game are historically accurate (plus, they slice, dice, and make great julienne fries).
Check it out! It's free!

Here's another free print-and-play about D-Day.
This one requires no cutting and no pasting. Just print 2 sheets of paper, find some dice and you are ready to go!
D-Day Dice was designed for solitaire playing (although it is surprisingly fun when played multiplayer). In this game, you must gather soldiers, recruit specialists, find items and muster the courage to advance from sector to sector, until you can finally reach the machine gun nest that's killing everyone.
