There's a bunch of geeklists about solitaire games around already, but none is strictly about solitaire WAR games. Since users more frequently specifically ask for recommendations of solitaire war games than solitaire games in general, and having responded to at least five of such prompts, I decided to create this geeklist. I hope it will serve as a reference. Expansions are included in the base game entry only when they have separate BGG entries.

How this list is ordered:

1) Boxed games. In chronological order, but games which use the same or similar systems are listed in sequence.

2) Magazine games. Ordered alphabetically and by publisher.

3) Print'n'Play games. Disorder.

Since I virtually have no experience with Print'n'Play or Magazine games, I only list them without providing comments. I would be glad, if another user with more experience in PnP or Mag games added more entries or singled out a particular game listing it as an separate entry, but unfortunately the best I can do to express my gratitude for this is by giving a single lousy thumb-up.
thumbsup

Please also note that this list is strictly about war games which are primarily meant to be played solitaire. For example Up Front, although containing a few rules (or hints) on solitaire play, should not be on this list.

I also want to restrict this game on games about real or hypothetical wars (conflict simulations), so
please leave fantasy or science fiction games off this list!

I used this link as reference: http://alsandor.net/jeux/sololistrev1.html

Last update: August 29th 2009.

(I.e. update from me. Many thanks to all the people adding games!)

I bought it last week and played it a few times. It's pretty good, the simple rules tackle the subject well, but it doesn't ask a lot in the way of planning and holding the Zulus back really comes down to good dice rolling.

I purchased this game a couple of months ago.
Truly excellent game can't fault it, am now awaiting steel wolves.
Really easy to learn and high in tension, can get very frustrating when your attacks go bent. Would recommend it to anyone, buy it now you will not be disapointed.

No other game can frustrate the hell out of you, and keep you coming back for more. 15 straight patrols without a single ship hit, and nothing gives you that 'punch the air' moment more intensely than when you take down that 5000t Maru!

It may have been a tongue-in-cheek comment, but it might be going a bit far to call the German submarine commander 'evil'! Of all branches of the German armed forces during WWII, the submarine service was felt by the allies to have fought a pretty clean war - certainly no worse than their own submarine forces. Many Allied commanders were very unhappy when Dönitz was hauled in front of the Nuremburg trials. Chester Nimitz for example commented that the US had conducted unrestricted submarine warfare from the day they entered the war, yet this was one of the 'charges' faced by Dönitz. And we Brits certainly didn't cover ourselves with glory when all ships were ordered to machine-gun helpless, surrendering German submariners who were abandoning their crippled vessels in the hope that dead bodies would jam the hatches, thus giving us time to board and obtain intelligence information before the crew scuttled the boat. It is supremely unfair to call every German who fought for their country during WWII 'evil', though it is undoubtedly true that many of their leaders were.

Much better produced game than Rommel. Still, it's much more of a resource management game than Rommel. The enemy does not really move or counter attack so managing your attacks, glory, glorification, battle plans, and forces is the key.

Welcome to Field Commander: Napoleon, the third in the series of Field Commander games. The goal in designing this game system was to make the careers of some of history’s great commanders accessible in an easy to learn, fast playing game format. They decided on solitaire, because it had the proper feel. Commanders have staff and advisors, but in the end, they alone make the hard decisions that affect lives, change the course of campaigns, and decide the fate of nations.

In this game, you make all the decisions needed to command your Forces. The game rules, charts, and die rolls dictate the actions of the opposing forces.

Currently in playtesting: http://danverssengames.blogspot.com/2009/02/marengo.html

It's possible to pre-order in January 2010.

Normally a manufacturing problem and not a retailer problem - Duel in the Dark was a prime or THE prime example - though I have not heard of this issue with DVG games either so surprised.

I don't really have a problem with the rulebook. What I do have a problem with is the fiddly nature of the design. It's a marker farm, highly procedural, and you spend a lot of time sifting through charts trying to find what you need. There are a lot of concepts I really like in the game, notably how it handles PDF and VOF, but there are some elements that really sap my enjoyment.

At the GMT site under Living Rules you find the version 2.1 rules. They are better than the first version but be aware that they are still by no means complete. You still are forced to scan the countless questions here on BGG with many incorrect answers except by a few experts.

Strangely enough, pretty much all of what you mention I see as positives, with the exception of the event cards that have lovely pictures but force you to go to a separate book to look up the actual event. But big board and counters were a plus for me. And the rulebook does tell you where to place cards on the board...

Love this game! I do feel you get a deeper enjoyment if you know the history of the Falklands War. I read about 3 books and numerous articles on the war before I even got the game. I have read more on it since, especially as it has been in the news again this anniversary year.
Despite a prior comment about components, I think they are first class, most are pertinent and used in tne game, and the rules leave nothing out. As for the board size...it is huge and it is great! None of this fiddling about trying to cram counters in undersized spaces.
I was very lucky and got a near mint copy for a very decent price, no where near what people are trying to get for them now.

This was an interesting game that I played a few times. The Japanese forces moved their weakest units first, which caused them to flood the US forces, and try to bog them down. The US has objectives, the Japanese (automatic) side is scored by how many casualties they can cause.

Bought this when it came out; mostly tedium for the American player, but of course, so was the actual battle. The Japanese defenders just sit on the board face down until you bump against them and activate them. The graphics are nice for a magazine game. Pretty much a "bug hunt."

I'm not sure the battle (almost 40,000 casualties (23,000 dead) in 36 days) could be described as "tedious".

Barbarossa Solitaire is a pretty challenging little game. Like the real campaign, things go pretty well for the Axis for the first couple of turns - then the slaughter begins. I'm feeling pretty lucky if I have any units left at the end. The graphics are probably the worst of any game I've played, but it has good playability as a short, challenging game. Need to try David's other games, I've heard they are all better than Barbarossa...

I really wanted simplicity and I feel there is room on my shelf for a quick rise and fall of the Roman empire game, but this just isn't it.

The dice determine how well you'll do and theres very little you can do about it.

I've played the vanilla version twice and I'm going to try my next game with all the rule additions at the end the rulebook, but I think that will probably be it.

I think the game could be improved significantly if it had the card driven political mechanism seen in Levée en masse. Possibly worth the $5 to other people, but it'll eventually collect dust at my house.

Well, time to shamelessly plug my solitaire game about Allied paratroopers on D-Day.

The game started as a variant of Zombie in my Pocket, but grew big enough, and different enough, to warrant its own entry.

Rulebook and campaign book include historical notes, and many of the scenarios are based on actual battles. Also, all 65 weapons & items found in the game are historically accurate (plus, they slice, dice, and make great julienne fries).

Check it out! It's free!

Agreed. This game should be removed from this list. I have many games with solitaire variants, such as Duel in the Dark and Tank on Tank and left them off because they are not primarily solitaire games. I can play any game solitaire, and just because I like it, doesn't mean it should on this list.

This game has as much in common with this list as Intruder or for that matter, the game solitaire that you play on your PC.

Here's another free print-and-play about D-Day.

This one requires no cutting and no pasting. Just print 2 sheets of paper, find some dice and you are ready to go!

D-Day Dice was designed for solitaire playing (although it is surprisingly fun when played multiplayer). In this game, you must gather soldiers, recruit specialists, find items and muster the courage to advance from sector to sector, until you can finally reach the machine gun nest that's killing everyone.

Nice and smart game, but extremely challenging. Wow, those machine guns really cut your unit into pieces quickly. Addicting.

No longer free. Can download the rules. As stated by Emmanuel Aquin 25/01/2011.

OK, here's the story.

My publisher (who prefers to remain nameless before making the big announcement) has asked that I take down the Battle Maps. He has agreed to let the rules and the Vassal module(s) in place. I have contacted the various translators, but I have forgotten a few (because I stupidly looked for "Map" files only, instead of reading the full descriptions of some files).

Any Map that's still there shouldn't be, and it's my fault. Their authors have now been contacted.

As for the rules, well, no harm in leaving them there, is it? They give you a sense of the game (even though the final product will have small differences) and let you know right off the bat if the game might interest you.

The specialty dice shouldn't be available anymore, since the published game will indeed contain 4 sets of specialty dice (which will cost you a lot less than if you bought them online anyway).

So you should wait a little for the published game, it's going to be worth it (if only for the dice). The box should contain 4 Battle Maps, including a new version of Exercise Tiger.

Hope this sheds a little light on the situation....

Thanks so much for this Simon!
I have very much appreciated your comments to my relentless questioning about solo wargames as well as the design I am working on. This wonderful list also brought a few new games to my attention!

Thanks!

I'm still against adding Solitaire ASL, because to be able to play this, you need to buy Beyond Valor and Yanks, two non-solitaire games. I don't know whether solitaire ASL implements an innovative solitaire game system which would work as a stand-alone, or whether it is just a stopgap solution for lonely ASL players.

If someone else wants to add it, go ahead and do so.

It's a bit of both. But in all fairness, it's a true solitaire game system, let's say it's a solitaire game for which you need the ASL rule book, ASL solitaire , and 2 opposing sides components as a minimum.

I would not include SASL. As far as I can tell, all the other games on this list are self-contained; if you buy that item, you're getting a complete game with everything you need to play it. This is so far from being the case for SASL that I think there's no comparison.

Beyond that, I agree with Joao that "it's a bit of both".

It's interesting to see how many of these games are no longer in print. Computers destroyed solo boardgames. But strangely, I've yet to find a really good computer wargame that is similar to a tabletop game that is as good as some of the games on this list. Bummer.

Actually, there seems to be a renaissance in this area lately. Fields of Fire, Field Commander: Rommel and B-29 all have come out in the last year or so. There's definitely a desire for designers to create solitaire games and for publishers to put them out. The "old school" grognard like myself appreciates not only the tactile feel of a cardboard wargame, but also the smell of the box, the preparing and sorting of the counters, the joy of opening a box and checking out the components. Wargames won't always be in the form they're in now, but I will be sad the day the last publisher disappears in favor of software.

Why leave sci-fi out? When does an "hypothetical" conflict in the future stops being "real" and becomes sci-fi? Is a wargame not a wargame if it's not about the "real" world? Why?

Because it's his list.

Well designed wargames give us insight into history, a virtue sorely lacking in American culture. While you need to look to the future, it is painfully true that history repeats itself and we need to understand it as well or better than guessing what the future will hold.

Historical (or "near-historical") wargames, by their very nature, require tremendous research into what happened (or might have happened) and as such holds more legitimacy as a scholarly tool. Star Fleet Battles, while an engaging game, is based off of a lot of science that in all likelihood won't exist (transporter tech, for example), at least given our current understanding of physics.

My suggestion, as always, is that if you don't like the parameters of the list, go make your own.

Just my $0.02.
