Zooloretto is based on the card game of Coloretto. In this game, players operate zoos, which they must fill with animals and merchandise carts. On a player's turn they can either turn up a tile and place it on one of the available trucks, or can take a truck and all its loaded cargo. Trucks only have space for three items, whether carts or animals, and players may find themselves having to take a truck with items that can not be used in their zoo. Points come at game end for having filled enclosures and for accompanying carts. Points are deducted for having unused animals in one's barn.

The basic game is a good introductory family game and has won many awards, including the prestigious Spiel des Jahres award as game of the year for 2007.

This adds more of the original types of animals, six of each, plus new vending and coin tiles. These cause the enclosures to be filled more easily, and these completed enclosures can then be shipped off to other zoos (not other players, but a game mechanism), and a point tile taken to represent the earnings from the other zoo.

Special one- and two-spot trucks are included for use in the two-player version of the game. These are more of a nicety than a necessity.

There is also an expansion for Aquaretto, which allows for an extra-large expansion board, more animal tiles, and a new mechanism concerning supplying the enclosures. If playing Aquaretto as an expansion for Zooloretto, then each of the supply tiles will provide supply for one enclosure for each of the two zoos a player builds.

An almost race-like mechanism is added to the game with this expansion. The placement of the included exotic animals or the placement of vending stalls will move visitor meeples through the zoo. Any visitor completing a tour of the zoo will result in a bonus tile being given to the fortunate zoo owner, which is worth points at game end. As with other elements of the game, there is a trade-off between generalization and over-specialization.

Ah, but the possibilities make choosing difficult!

My friend came over a couple of times and we played his Zooloretto with my children (age 6, 8, 10, 12), and they really enjoyed it (they have a reasonable amount of gaming experience). So perhaps I should get Zooloretto.

But ... on the other hand Aquaretto (which I haven't seen or played) seems more suitable for gamers and involves slightly more interesting/meaningful decisions. So perhaps I should get Aquaretto.

But ... on the other hand, Aquaretto doesn't seem to be quite as gateway and non-gamer friendly. So perhaps I should get Zooloretto.

But ... on the other hand my daughter just adores dolphins. So perhaps I should get Aquaretto.

Arrgh!
So do I buy Zooloretto or Aquaretto? (assume for a moment that getting both isn't an option) Or am I operating with some false assumptions?

If your goal is gaming with children, go with Zooloretto first. Use the expansions to vary things up if you feel the need for more. Don't get Aquaretto until they're a little older, then once you do, play it once then combine the games.

I'm a big fan of the combination of both games, but that's mostly because I want to play longer, more in depth games.

Start with Zooloretto and then get Aquaretto later.

Which reminds me that I want to play the combined game again...

Players are now building aquarium parks (similar to Sea World or Marine Land) using many of the same basic mechanisms as Zooloretto. There is now more leniency about tile placement, as players decide how big each enclosure will be. Workers are introduced, which can add to players' scores. Overall, this is a slightly heavier version of the game system, more of a gamer's game than Zooloretto.

Combined with the base game, players now build two parks simultaneously, a zoo park and an aquarium park, increasing both the length and complexity of the game.

Thanks! I always appreciate it when designers help pull things together for us. Just curious, have you ever thought of doing an "origins of my games" GeekList similar to those Andrea Angiolino and Andreas Seyfarth have done?

Thank you for designing these games. It's always been so tough to get my wife to sit down and play board games, but she really enjoys both Zooloretto and Aquaretto.

The theme(s) really makes all the difference. We had actually all played Coloretto at my friend's house a few months before, but it was too abstract for her to find interest in trying to grasp the strategies. But she really enjoys (and so has everyone else we've introduced the games to) the theme of Zooloretto and Aquaretto, and the possible strategies seem to make more sense to her given the setting, which she enjoys greatly.

So thanks again!
Dave
