So I was at my mother's house today, and I decided to glance into the old games cupboard. Squashed below a copy Clue, two copies of Monopoly, and a Pente tube (I owned Pente?) was my old beloved copy of Dungeon. I had not seen it in over 20 years. I grabbed the flattened box, and without opening it, I took it home with me, grabbed my camera, and decided to record the unveiling.

Enjoy the trip down my memory lane!

Here is my copy. Looks a bit more weathered and beaten down by time than the one pictured on the left. I never knew what that green monster was coming through the tunnel, but it sure looks cool. I am hoping at this time that I haven't lost much of my contents.

Let's take a look at the back of the box.

That is the very version I used to have! Sadly my Dad went through a rare cleaning fit and disposed of that, Tower of the Wizard King, and Fireball Island... sigh... On the bright side, my husband thrifted a copy of "the new" Dungeon for me, so hopefully that is nearly as good as the old favorite. Congrats on finding your lost treasure!

Wow - the back is beat to hell. But more importantly, look at this family. Can you imagine ANY family sitting down to a game of Dungeon and being this happy? Or even playing it in the first place?

(Is it just me or does Dad look like he can't wait to get up and go do something else?)

Yes. My family plays this game quite often actually. But we've given it a break as my 7 yr old daughter remains undefeated. And that's after about 10 plays, also no one trying to "let" the young one win. A bit spooky, but an enjoyable game for what it is. I'd say the game has a nice balance and is a lot of fun to play.

When I was young my best friend played Dungeon with his family regularly. Granted, his father was a huge gamer with hundreds of games lining the shelves.

I remember wanting to be adopted when my friend's mother, seeing that I was being shown the game, pulled out a thin piece of plexiglass that they had cut to protect the board and ensure it lay flat. Awesome!

I think this confirms that the much hated-on color scheme used for the location circles in Defenders of the Realm, really is an homage to old-school TSR boards. Fantasy Forest came to mind initially, but I forgot all about how Dungeon used the same color scheme.

That eye-popping shade of fuchsia is pretty unmistakable.

Bonkers! is amazing. We had a friend who convinced us to play the game with the objective of trying to send everyone to LOSE one time, and it was the most hilarious game I have ever witnessed. We actually made it completely impossible to win.

Great game. Cheers Nathan Eisenger, you shall ever go down in history for this accomplishment.

A close up on those earlier mentioned ugly yellow dice. Look at those suckers. It's like they invented this boardgame just to try and sell off their excess of yellow plastic atrocities so they didn't have to stare at them in their warehouse anymore.

Hmm...digging around in here...these look like little pieces of notebook paper...what the heck...

Oh my gosh! I remember making my own monsters! I must have decided the game needed a white dragon as well. Not bad art for a 10 year old if I do say so myself. It must be noted that I don't think my penmanship has improved in any way.

Let's see what else I came up with...

OK...a little grim. Apparently I needed to draw in the fresh blood on the axe because he didn't look evil enough. Plus, I don't think he has the forearms and biceps to really wield that thing, but oh well.

An evil wizard. Always a classic. I notice that I went into great detail on this. That's a lot of writing for a small kid. I also decided that he needed to look like an alien straight out of Close Encounters of the Third kind as well.

Third...it is apparently peeing on the ground.

Ok guys, a 'google' is a name for a number. It's a 1 followed by 100 zeroes. It's been around for a LONG time, it's just the web search company was the first to trademark it as their name. I'm not surprised he had heard of the word google. Of course, then there is a google-plex. Which is, a 1 followed by a google zeroes.

To be honest, this is where I saw it first, as a young kid with tons of Peanuts comics at my disposal. The name just stuck with me.

I would like the record to show that I have NEVER done drugs in my life, yet this looks like something out of some weird, shrooming adventure.

Not only is it a banana, it is giant, and it SNORTS.

What the hell - I don't remember making this at all.

With a little photoshop work you really could make that into an actual card for the game, play it with some friends for old times sake and watch the expressions on their faces!

The ultimate sequel title is always:

"Beneath the Planet of... The Giant Snorting Bananas!"

I played Dungeon! this weekend, with family. Good fun.

Thanks for sharing your trip back in time.

Fantastic list. Dungeon is one of the earliest board games I can remember playing. My cousin and I used to love reading the D&D rulebooks but couldn't be bothered to actually play; Dungeon gave us that chance. I can vividly recall those early 80's Friday nights in my aunt's basement: while our moms and everyone else were upstairs having Tupperware and Avon parties, unbeknownst to them, we were slaying dragons and gathering treasure below their feet...

This GL inspired me to play it again too. Such memories! My husband got a kick out of it too, so I guess it holds up well, after all this time, as a good light dungeon adventure! And I will definitely take this to the in-laws, my MIL loves monster slaying and treasure collecting games!

That was a wonderful read - I was smiling all the way through the list, particularly with monsters. Kids are awesome and we were all kids in the past! Thanks for sharing that and what a great find.
